Please see copy and paste below. I'll be out of town that week so if
we wish to partake in any activities here (and I think we should)
please let me know your feelings fairly soon so I can set it up.

Second Astronomy Day Coming Up on September 15th
Astronomy Day LogoAs an experiment the Astronomical League has
declared a second astronomy day this fall for September 15th. Due to
the short time frame and summer holidays each Centre will need to get
mobilized quickly in order to have the majority of Centres offering
something for this new fall Astronomy Day. If you are interested in
helping your Centre rise to the challenge and "pull-off" an Astronomy
Day activity please contact your local A-Day rep and or Council
immediately.
So far Belleville, Kingston, Quebec, Edmonton, Mississauga, New
Brunswick and Prince George Centres have committed themselves to
organizing a fall Astronomy day event. Don't forget to keep the
Education Committee informed of your activities so we can post them to
the National Web site. Please respond with the date, time, location
and a brief description of your Centre's event no later than August
31, 2007 to brianbattersby73@....
* The Moon phase is a waxing crescent with New Moon occurring on
Sept. 11
and 1st Quarter on Sept. 19.
* The theme for Astronomy Day this year is "Bringing Astronomy to
the People".
For more information about Astronomy Day visit the Astronomical
League's official Astronomy Day Web page at
www.astroleague.org/al/astroday/astroday.html or visit the RASC
National Web site's "Astronomy Day Resources" page at
www.rasc.ca/astroday/resources.shtml for information and resources to
help plan your Astronomy Day events. Also be sure to keep an eye on
the Astronomy Day 2007 Web page as well to see what other Centres
across the nation have planned.
If you have ideas or materials, or are looking for ideas or materials,
to share for Astronomy Day please sign up to the Educators e-mail list
and interact with other like-minded people across the RASC. This new
list is the place to come for "anyone who wishes to participate in
discussions on education and outreach, how to get started, what
centres need, or if you have any questions at all." You can sign up
at: crux.stmarys.ca/mm21/listinfo/educators.
Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
rascstoon group:
Do you want us as a group to send a proposal(s) to the MOST Telesope team and be
part of a research on a object(s) of our choice? (more details at
http://most.oracology.net/)
o Yes, we should send a proposal
o No, we should not participate
To vote, please visit the following web page:

Note: Please do not reply to this message. Poll votes are
not collected via email. To vote, you must go to the Yahoo! Groups
web site listed above.
Thanks!
Pardon me for useing the group for this one but I don't have Daryl's
email on this computer.
Daryl can you kindly give me a call here at work?
I've just received an email about some eye pieces being sent Express
Post to my home.

Hey Jeff,
sorry I am asking you this through here but I only have one question.
Can the ticket for SSSP be purchased right at SSSP? Or do I have to buy
it up front? what is better for you guys? Do you need to know the final
count up ahead? I know its already pretty late and I could have bouth
it as a "early bird" but I wasnt 100% sure if I was comeing. And now it
looks like I will make it...
Anyway..have a great long weekend
Lubos
Good Morning Lubos
You can register at the event, however the Banquet is now sold out and
you will have to request to be added to a waiting list when you register.
Everything else is open but there will be a limited supply of unspoken
for t-shirts golf shirts and hoodies.
See you there

I've thrown up a different set of photos....mostly people shots and I see the
illustrious Mr.
Ron (I've got a new cookstove) Waldron has added some of his photos as well.

..a good purchase?? Does any of you have it? is it good to have or you
guys don't really use it?
And which one do you recommend? Pro PLus? Pro? or Enthusiast?
Thank you for the answers
L.
How about the first filter?
I was thinking about UHC filter but I have never seen one (or through
one) so I don't know..is it worht the $100 it costs?
And which company is the best at making the filters?
Can you see the difference between the same filters from different
companies (eg cheaper and more expensive)
any thoughts or suggestions would be great
thank you
L.
I've used both Starry Night Pro Plus 6 and TheSky 6. Starry Night while
it's very nice, is a pig on resources. I've got a 3.4ghz Pentium with
HT with 1gb of ram and a ATI Rage so there's no way Starry Night should
crawl, but it does. TheSky 6 professional I managed to find a really
good deal on ($15 but missing the video disk and the box) and it's much
easier on resources. I don't think I've ever crashed it either. There
is some free software out there as well. Software Bisque have a really
good support system whereas I don't think Starry Night does although I
cocould be wrong on that.

Best bet is to come out to an observer's night and ask to see who has
which filter and if they'll show you something with it.. Larry Scott
has a UHC which really brings out bright nebula. It's a Lumicon.
Also decide on a size and stick to it. Personally I think your better
off purchasing 2" filters and they can be used on 1 1/4" adapters
easily, and allow you to use them on 2" eyepieces. This could save you
money if at some point you end up with 2" eyepieces and only have 1
1/4" filters.. i'm sure someone else will have a differant opinion.

I have it and make much use of it. Like it so much that when the new
version came out I purchased it as well.
A ton of features and it also sure helps pass time on cloudy days and
nights.
Of course the fact that it is Mac friendly is of great benefit to me.
Be aware though that if you have the new vist OS that there could be
issues.

I've not used a UHC filter but during a conversation at SSSP the UHC
filter kept comming up.
I use a light pollution filter from Lumicon for here in the city. It
really helps with me having to look over the freeway.
During the spring Ron Waldron showed me the veil nebula through an
OIII filter and I was determined to get on so I purchased at SSSP.
What a difference with the Dumbell nebulae the triffid and the lagoon
nebulas and the view of the Swan nebula was the cat's meow.
There is an excellent article on filters with a great chart in the
Observers handbook

Starry Night Pro screams on my Mac. and they have a dedicated Yahoo
group for support.
I've heard all sorts of great things about the Sky 6 but have never
actually seen it in action.
Software Bisque had an excellent reputation as well. You can't go
wrong with either but Colton brings up a good point on resource
allocation and Starry Night Pro could very well bog down a slower computer

Both the clear sky clock and Environment Canada are predicting poor
observing conditions for tonight so I'm not planning on going to
Sleaford. Next Observers Group is scheduled for September 7th.
Larry
Thank you for your info.
I bought a Starry Night Digital Download couple days ago which saved
me some money. Here are some of m y thoughts:
Well first of all..after purchasing that copy I found that it doesnt
have all the functions of a Pro version (which makes sense but I
tend to be a little naive) which I would like to have 9even thou I
can live without). The functions being stuff like:
- you cannot enter your own equipment which would automatically give
you the FOV circles on the screen with different eyepieces (in the
Digital download version you can set up FOV circles but you have to
calculate your own FOVs for different combinations, which is that
bad either)
- when you are setting up your starrhopping charts that are
printable you cannot view them befor you print which I find kinda
stupid because I would like to see them before I print them off
but as I said this stuff is not critical
Othervise I love it so far.
I chose 5 modules ($6 each) for download which expanded my database
a little bit which helps because the core version for download
(only $25) is quite limited but even after downloading those 5
modules I saved almost $100. Maybe I will still discover a lots of
functions its missing compared to Pro but we will see.
I hope this info helps anybody who was thinking about buying the
Starry Night

For your printable maps you should have 3 maps per page (if you wish)
You should see how the contelation looks from the ground, the second
map should show you how your target looks in the finderscope and
finally the large map should show you what you should see in the
eyepiece (chhose from refractor, reflector etc.)
It's tonnes of fun and very educational.

Thought members might like to see three photos I took through my 80mm
Antares Sentinel Telescope on Tuesday morning. Conditions in
Saskatoon were perfect as the sky was clear after a prior rainfall.
The camera was a Fujifilm S5100 set at 200 ISO and most exposures were
1 second at F4. I have posted them on our photos link
Nice pics, I too watched the event, didn't look promising when I went
to sleep at 10:00pm, when I woke up at 1:30am it was looking
promising, then it totally broke open around 2:30, it was clear
sailing from there on in, oh happy day, or night!
