it's wonderful that it's international. Praise to you, dear moderator.

No, love, it's to make sure you typed in the password you thought you typed
into the first box. If it only required you to type it once, and you made
a typo but didn't realize it because the letters aren't echoed, then you
would never be able to log on again - unless you made the exact same typo -
because you wouldn't be typing in the right, er... wrong password.

Relax, it's just zeroes and one's.

NT until I'm comfortable using a Linux server.

The only thing was that Linux couldn't handle my AWE64...

I was originally dual booting RH and NT 4.0. But the NT partition
started to get ugly so I killed it and returned to 98. Besides, 98
has much better support for my voodoo 2 card than NT does. But it
seems the ideal situation in my mind. I use RH all day for work and
for most of my computing needs, and in the evening I boot to 98 and
play some unreal to take away the stress of the day. BTW does anyone
here know how to get the Unreal Tournament to run under RH?

The last part isn't real important I was just wondering if anyone had
had luck with it.

RH 6.0 and Win95 for me. If it were up to me, the whole disk would be Linux
but others in the family don't want to change.

Only been on RH for a week or so now. I will be asking lots of questions.

I have a low end Pentium equivalent system (IBM 120mhz cpu), with
64 megs ram, genuine Sound Blaster 16 sound card, and a Trident 1 meg
video card. (ISA, I believe) I had Windows '95 running on it, decided to
go back to Dos a while back (to play some really old games), and then
finally decided to try Red Hat 6.0 (Mandrake) I formatted the hard drive
before installing, because I only want 1 os on there.

	 Unfortunately, it gets stuck every time I try to boot, even though
it was running quite solid under Win '95 and Dos 6. I am using the floppy
boot disk that came with the package, and have gotten no help at all from
the technical support people over email. (they have done such wonderful
things as giving me an invalid web address to go to to download some new
disk file, which I would have to do something else to in order to make it
a true boot disk)

	 So, I'm sitting here in the same situation I was in with Linux 5.1
about a year ago - stuck, can't get it installed, and ready to pitch it in
the trash can. Yes, that is exactly what I did with Linux 5 then, but I
decided to give it one more shot, since Linux 6 promised much easier
installation.  Yeah, right.

	 Anyway, here is what I'm getting on the screen:

Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill idle task!

In swapper task not syncing

(and then it just stops and sits there)

	 Please help!

Hi

I had a similar problem. Need some more info. What harddisk are you using. I
have found RedHat to be very spesific about how you partion the harddisk.

1. In the 5.1/6.0 manual there was a spesification for how to partion, wich
partions and their zice's. once i used that info everything worked.
2. When does your system freeze, during initial boot on install disk ? or
first boot after installing ? Tried booting on cd ?
3. Have you checked your computer memory, other hardware with some analysis
/ diagnostic software. I have found linux to be much less fault tollerant
than Microsofa software. I.e. chaning memory card etc could solve your
problem if such is the case.
4. There is a description in the manual on how to take diskimage files and
create new boot disks. If you dont find it come back and i'll help you.

Keep us posted.

ya well if your intimidated by problems don't use linux,

but linux is stable once you learn to use it,

you won't need to know what kernel panic is in detail other than there are
steps to follow to get linux installed and you MUST follow them logically

step 1 is your hardware compatitble?? look it up on www.redhat.com
somewhere

if so

step 2 do you have the resources you need to install and run redhat 6.0??

if so

reinstall

i reinstalled like 30 times until i stopped breaking things i don't anymore but
that is how it goes............

good luck

Dan,
     I never thought that the "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" class would come in
handy,
but something "clicked" when I read your post. I went back into Scott Mueller's
text (by
the same name) and couldn't readily find anything (yet), so dug out my year-old
class
notes and found the following which may apply:
     "Partitioning:
         1st partition - MUST BE DOS partition.
         2nd partition - other non-DOS (Linux, Unix) partition
         3rd partition - other non-DOS partition
         4th partition - other non-DOS partition, et cetera.... "

     So, I suspect at least 1% (one percent) of the high level formatted disk
drive must
be a "DOS" partition, that is, a non-Linux, non-Unix partition. My guess would
be that
it has to be DOS, since your format command and/or your partition program was
probably
"DOS-based" and therefor set some internal parameters according to "DOS
requirements".
     You are not the first person that I've heard voice the frustration of a non
functional Linux partitioning experience. It doesn't make any sense, except that
a
format and/or partition command (program) might be an inherent "DOS command",
and looks
for at least one "token" DOS partition.
     Then again, DOS may be such an inherent part of the PC that some of the
firmware may
require at least a "token" DOS partition. Worth a try?
     If you repartition and make that (one percent) small partition according to
the
above "rule", kindly get back to the redhat@onelist.com folks and let us know
what your
experience was.
     Good luck.
Mike

p.s. - more technical details about the system you are "linuxizing" (new word?)
would be
helpful to me. CPU type? HDD size? What programs you used to format and
partition your
HDD?

answer is as many as you want. you mount them on the root partition as
subdirectories /dos_c /NT_NTFS....

if you have less than (i think) 16 Meg ram, you will need two partitions
one for swap space...one for everthing else,

BTW try SUSE 6.2, it Rocks, KDE Desktop, everthing set to go. Yast (yet
another setup tool) makes adding packages sooo Easy.

HTTP://www.suse.com

as for yor other Question...

no you will have no problems with NT, Win9X, Linux dual boot. as long as
you have partions for all of them....

Also linux will Read and write to Fat16, Fat32, HPFS, NTFS, and about 15
others....

Peter,

Maybe James hasn't used Redhat for a while & maybe has never dual booted
with NT. Otherwise he wouldn't have answered as he did.

Two partitions is a real world minimum, one mounted as / & one swap
partition. For a lot of people just testing out linux, this is enough. Only
problem with it is that if you re-install later, you loose all your
configuration files & additional packages/updates you may have added. One
way around this is to backup your configuration files & anything else you
need to save to your windows partition prior to re-install.

Now, NT does present a minor problem. Not NT istself, but it's bootloader &
how it works. If you install LILO (Linux Loader) onto the MBR as you would
normally do, you will loose the ability to boot NT without a bit of work.

Heres a couple of links you really should look at BEFORE installing linux:

http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html

http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/mini/Multiboot-with-LILO

They both describe setting up multiboots with 9x+NT+Linux. The first one
shows how to use the NT loader to boot linux, the other shows how to use
LILO to boot NT. Both suggest using BootPart to edit the NT boot files, and
it is available as a 25k zip file from:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gvollant/bootpart.htm

Hope that helps.

BTW - RedHat comes with KDE & other windows managers, so that point is
neither here or there, & yes, Yast is good, but RedHat RPM is just as
easy......

Or you could use something like Partition Magic (commercial) or Ranish
Partition Manager which is available free at
http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/

Just a thought.

Hi All,

I downloaded Kxicq from suse.com (I run RedHat 6.0) but need the compiled
library libicq.so.0. I have searched the net for it but can only find the
source. I don't have the disk space to install the development software. Can
someone point me to a place where I can get a compiled library?

Thanks,
Larry

You can get RPMs here: http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/icqlib.html

Peter,

Red Hat, as with all other Linux distributions, require at least one Native
Linux (ext2) partition and one Linux swap partition.

As for the sizes, the swap partition cannot be any larger than 127MB. If you
have 32MB or less memory, I recommend at least 4 times the physical RAM. If you
have greater than 32MB of physical RAM in your system, then I recommend creating
a swap partition of 127MB.

For the Native Linux partition, I recommend at least 1GB for Linux installation.

Since you have Windows installed on your PC, you will need to make sure that you
have at least 1.2GB (accounting for the swap space) of unpartitioned space
available on your hard drive. If no such space is available, then I would
recommend installing and running Partition Magic 4.0 to create the necessary
space. Red Hat requires 900MB for a full installation. I recommend at least
1GB to allow not only for the installation of Linux and whatever software you
wish to install with it, but you will also need to accomodate space for user
files.

Hope this Helps.

Subject: 2 Distro's/hda5 and hda7/mbr - question
samsvoxplace@xxxxx.xxxx
Send Email Send Email

Hello to the group,
     I have been trying out my newbie wings. I had
Mandrake 6.1 running fine on hda5. Then I installed
TurboLinux 4.0 on hda7 .. oops

     hda1 is swap
     hda2 is extended with:
         hda5 Mandrake 6.1
         hda6 is empty (future distro)
         hda7 is TurboLinux 4.0
     hda3 is a shared /hold

     The problem is I told them both to do it from the
mbr. Duh .. well live/play and learn. Now .. I can
boot up either distro.
     Turbo being the last distro I installed it boots
just fine.

     However when I boot Mandrake I get errors
partaining to the wrong kernal / modules ..
------------
/boot/System.map has incorrect kernel
can't open /lib/modules/2.2.11/modules.map
Sound modules failed
midi modules failed
eth0 initializations failed

starting port mapper Warning:

blah blah blah bla
------------
     I tried the editing of the /etc/lilo.config file
in both distros. With the resulting error that the ..
other "image=/boot/vmlinuz" doesn't exist .. I'm sure
this is probably due to the mbr thingie.
-------------
     Mandrake's lilo

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=180  (my edit ..)
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.13-7mdk
         label=linux-md61
         root=/dev/hda5
         read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.11
         label=linux-tb40
         root=/dev/hda7
         read-only
-----------------

     TurboLinux 4.0

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=180  (my edit ..)
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.13-7mdk
         label=linux-md61
         root=/dev/hda5
         read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
         label=linux-tb40
         root=/dev/hda7
         read-only
-----------------

     I think what I need to do is set them both to boot
from their own particular partitions. Rather than the
mbr.
**********************
     The question I have is ..
Can I overcome the problem from here .. thusly
learning from my mistakes .. becoming even more
dangerous .. err .. compatent <sp?> .. can't even
spell it so that's not an option.
Or do I have to do the typical newbie responce ..
format/re-install?

     Then taking off from there .. how do I tell the
mbr where/which to boot .. I would rather not have to
boot from disk to do this.

     Sorry for the long winded message. Hope I gave all
the needed info.

TIA,
Sam

P.S. RTFM's are acceptable, as long as url's are
attached. >sigh<
