Why Linux Security Will Succeed
by Brian Martin - Sun, 30 Jan 2000 03:07:49pm

An exerpt to get your interest tweaked:

"Looking at the Freshmeat mail for January 26th, I
learn of four new security software package events.
The first is a low urgency upgrade to the Fwctl
program, which helps users configure a tight firewall.
Next is an updated version of a popular vulnerability
scanner
called SAINT that is a highly evolved version of its
predecessor SATAN. Third in the security category is a
new package called Tripwall which is designed to give
an alternative to a better known Tripwire package that
some feel has become too commercial. Last is a small
upgrade to the Linux Intrusion Detection System (LIDS)
package. All of these commercial grade tools in a
single day, and all of them free of charge."

Hi all

This may give you a laugh.

I got RH 6.1 the other day (fifty pence cheaper than the lapel badge I got
at the same time, now that's what you call value) and decided to just
install the whole thing from scratch as I made a bit of a mess with 6.0.

I went through the install with no problems, set up LILO to dual boot with
win98se and rebooted, but windoze was not a LILO option. I went back in and
made some adjustments and tried again, it still ignored my changes. I was
starting to panic now as I had work to be getting on with, then it struck
me. When installing I made a rescue disk, and it was still sitting in the
drive.

Doh!

I took it out and everything worked (oddly enough).

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who does stuff like that. I'm just
hoping that in a day or two I'll discover that my inability to get Xwindows
working is due to some similar mistake on my part. It gives me hope.

I have done similar things....left the cd-rom in the drive and rebooted and
thought i lost my install, so i went ahead and re-installed, for probably
the 5th or 6th time that week. But, it never hurts to do a re-install
(unless of course you have sensitive data). With each new install I attempt,
I learn something new each time. Heck, I started just doing a complete
overhaul on my laptop every month, just to keep me on my toes.

Hi!

I really messed up my linux. I wanted to change the permissions of all the +s
files on my comp so no normal user will be able to hack me this way.
as i'm not for a long time into linux i thought that it would not be to much
bother chmoding 000 files like mount and umount. I thought that the initial
startup is made as root and it would not care anyway about file permissions...
so i chmod them on 000. I reboot... and ofcourse i get an error... can't mount
root fs. but at least it tried to mount it. Seeing this i thought that entering
in single mode would be fine... but i could only enter read-only.

then i put a trinux image on a floppy (i did not have a root.img), and mounted
the linux partition and chmoded back all the files.
i thought it will work now so i rebooted... and i got Kernel panic : VFS :
Unable to mount root fs on 03:05

grrr... have no idee what to do. could anyone help me?

ps: now i can't even enter in kernel single mode
i have(or had :*() rh 6.0

Greeting mihai-

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I strongly suspect
that you've just hosed (ruined) you'r install.

Take cheer! You are now a member of a small number
of people who (like me too :) who know more about
what NOT to do <grin> which I think is just as important.

hint: after you reinstall linux, pop in a formatted floppy
and as root create this w/ pico

#tar czvf /path_to/floppy/etc-backup.tgz /etc/*
this will make a backup of the files in /etc

#and if your users need to save files:
tar czvf /path_to/floppy/user_name_goes_here.tgz /home/user_name_goes_here/*

save those lines above to a folder on your path call it
'qb' for quick backup then type:
chmod +x /path/to/qb
this will make the file executable

make sure your floppy is mounted (after you insert the media)

now get back to hacking you've just learned quite a valuable
lesson the hard way.

good luck to you.

later on,
digs

Subject: Seeking a simple solution to compilation errors? (and one or two others)
jon.spriggs@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi,

I am trying to learn how to run RedHat 6 in our office. I've got a pretty
good idea of how to get _MOST_ things running, but the one thing that seems
to confuse most people is as follows:

I've downloaded Leafnode (and a couple of erm... non-essential programs :) )
to run on the linux machine. I've de-tar'ed them, and am all set to run
./configure on them.... and its saying that I have a problem with the fact
that GCC won't compile.

I've tried installing every damn RPM I can think of that will allow me to
compile - and the bug.. erm I mean the swine still won't work!

Any suggestions?

Also:

I'm trying to make Sendmail work so that it doesn't have to do a DNS lookup
every time it connects (i.e., connect to SMTP server - tell it to send,
disconnect), and someone pointed me once to an obscure reference in the
sendmail online manual, but it made little, if no, sense to me of little
linux knowledge :)

Also: (sorry, should really have approached this as three separate e-mails I
suppose)...

I've got a distro of linux called Xpresso linux, which is based around RH6.
I've installed it at work. It works. I've brought it home. It doesn't, and
hangs.
I got PC Plus (a UK magazine who are reasonably pro linux), and they had
Corel Linux on the coverdisk, I brought it home. I put it in the CD Rom
drive, it autobooted, and detected the hardware, started the GUI
installation manager.... and then ejected the CD and re-booted.

I've got a PC100 motherboard, with onboard Graphics, Sound, Modem and Lan
card - I'm not expecting all features to work perfectly, but I was kindof
hoping that at least SOME of it might work.

If anyone wants spec's of that motherboard, e-mail me or the list, and I'll
post them to you.

Many thanks to you all, and I'm sorry about cross posting to the different
groups, but I think that there are different areas of specialisation in all
three groups - I might be wrong - who's to say???

Hello,

Someone is spamming from my server and I absolutely want to block that.

I already did block relaying, but the guy now changed it from address to include
my domain in it.

The question is:

     1. how can I tell sendmail to only accept mail from local Unix users
(I know about the "access.db" but is there something dynamic ?)

     2. can I use authentication, so that sendmail asks my users for a
username/password in order to relay mail ?
(you know, in outlook express and Netscape, the "outgoing mail server
username" option ?
if yes, is there a way to use it only if the mailer's adress is in my
domain ?
I would not want to block myself from receiving mail !

I'm using RHLinux 6.1, Sendmail 8.9.3/8.8.7 and Majordomo.

Thanks,

Mathieu

OK, I said I'd send a list of RPMs I've got installed once I'd worked out
how to do it.. and I've figured it out, and so.....

Here it is (sorry about the length, I tried to reduce the number of lines it
was, and it just looked all out of proportion, so I left it in the format
that RPM gave it to me in). Is there anything here that anyone can say for
certain I am missing here? Anything it may be in my interest to install that
isn't listed below.

Hello: Am new in the list, so i present myself.
I am Pablo De Leon, writing from Neuquen, Argentina.(spanish,
english).
I was all of the summer doing extraneous things with Linux and i
learned a bit about.
I had software, config and hadware problems, installed all from
scratch a lot of times and finally get a net of two computers with W95 and
Linux work friendly.

I need some help to find info about next (s) step (s).

1 ) what is, where download and tutorials about Wine. (emulates Win311 or
W95?)

2) I have a telephone connection in one of the machines. how to allow the
other(s) computer(s) in my net use a unique Internet connection. I know it
will be slow, but cheap. (apache????, squid???....????).

3) Games for linux?

4) I cannot do that a user "X" shudown the system. I tried with a link to "halt"
but only can be used as root. Don't want to use <ctrl><alt><del> because the
user must be waiting the exact moment when turn off the system, else it reboots.

Thanks in advance.

Short life to the king Bill.

Hey Pablo,

I'll throw a little in on this.

What you said...

> From: "Pablo De Leon" <pdeleon@...>

NextStep, or Next, as I understand it, was the first OS
conceived of by Steve Jobs for the Apple. It's still in use here
& there, as a matter of fact, the last ISP I'd worked for
(SeaNet.Com) uses it on all their workstations. Jobs is going
back to this concept with OS 10 &, in turn, making Macs Unix
boxes.

Wine.Org, I believe would be the best source.

   Hope this helps.

Hello,

The scandisk equivalent under linux "fsck" I've never tried to repair a
fat file system this but it should work....

for more info "man fsck"

as for defrag,

http://www.suse.de/en/linux/linux_faq/defrag18.html

there is no defrag under linux, as there is no need.

I perhaps didn't make myself clear, I do not want to defrag my Linux
partitions, I want to defrag my win98 partition (fat32) from within Linux.

Like I said there is no defrag in linux because there is no need to
defrag the filing system, it doesn't allow fragment to form in the first
place. so there is no way to defrag your DOS filing systems from linux.

DOS had an option to use "Best fit" back in Ver 2.0? where the
filesystem would look for a hole big enough for the file instead of just
putting it on the hard drive starting at the first available hole and
continuing to file holes until the file was written to the hard drive.
But Micro$oft botched it so bad they had to drop it.

And we still pay for this operating system??????????

Ok, I'll bite. If there is no fragmentation in Linux, then why, when I
run an fsck, do I get the message "x.x% non-contiguous"?

Yes that's true you can never get away from fragments, once and a while
there won't be a place large enough for the file being writen and it
will have to be broken into 2 or more large pieces. but I have never
seen a linux box 5% fragmented even after years of operation, but I have
seen DOS boxes 20% after only a couple of months. and I defraged one
that was 58% fragmented and the guy couldn't figure out why it took 3
minutes to load wordpad......

btw,

my root partition is 2.5% "Fragmented" and thats only because it 93%
full and I need to "clean house".

you need to make a bootable "Rescue disk" that has fsck or e2fsck on it.
most versions of linux have a utility to generate a rescue disk.

boot from that disk and repair the file system. it sounds like there is
an error on the hard drive that can't be repaired while it's mounted.

Hi All

Todays problem is.

I've just installed a Sound Blaster PCI64 card which is of course the Ensonique
ES1370 under a different name.

It works just fine except: that if I run an external stereo sound source into
the line in plug, I only get sound in one channel. Whereas if I play an MP3 or
system generated sound it is in stereo. Is this a bug in the driver, if so does
anyone know of a fix or is there something wrong with my card. I will see my
supplier on Tuesday to see what he has to say but I was hopeing for some online
help as well

Thanks
Colin

Ok, so this isn't really dealing with Red Hat or Linux at all but it's not
really quite off-topic since we are talking about file fragmentation.

Only Microsoft could market an operating system where file fragmentation was one
of it's most noticeable bugs and then offer a utility to repair the damage that
the bug has done rather than providing a real fix.

I just had to take that shot.

Linux doesn't fragment the disk, but Windoze does, and it is the windoze
partition I want to defrag from Linux.

O.K. one more time.....

there is no defrag utility in linux.

A few good ways to help prevent fragmentation.
(in order of effectiveness)

1. Delete windows
2. Set the windows minimum swapfile size to 20-50 meg.
3. if you have a second DOS partition put the swapfile there. (d:)
4. add a lot more RAM. (128+ Meg)

except for the first. these sugestions only slow the process.

BTW, you don't have to Scandisk before Defraging, Defrag Checks the hard
drive before it runs. it's the first 10%.

Subject: X-server is missing?!
Soulreaper@...

Hi!

When I install Redhat 6.1 the stetup DOESN'T reckognize my graphicscard
(Trident Cyberblade i7 AGP 8 MB). When I try and run the Xconfigurator
or xconf I try and add a svga-server OR select the Cyberblade from the
cardlist. Then I save the settings, but when I type startx it says errno3
errno 111 etc. It says that an xserver is not existingor something. This (I
think)
has something to do with the fact that the setup didn't find my card in the
setup
and hmm... it exits Xconfigurator telling me that no xserver exists. I also
tried
various "accelerated cards" and also tried the vga option... nothing...

I did a superprobe and well I got to say that it was a Trident with 256kbytes of
memory.
This CAN'T be right when I'm having 8 megs... it said it was a pci, the card
is AGP. When I tried to add the card the Xconfigurator exited with the following
errormessage:

"Server doesn't exist, can't continue.
tried to use ../ .//usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA"

I also have a Voodoo2 accelerator on pci, but should this interfere with the
installation?!

I mean... why is this?! I would really want some help.
Maybe you have some ideas on this?!

I'll appriciate if you could email me directly instead of sending to the list,
due to the fact
that I receive 150+ emails a day and it's a pain in the *** to "sort out" the
information I
receive on a daily basis. The email to send to is Soulreaper@...

Thanks in advance!

/Henrik
