You cannot set /etc and /var to be only readable to root, if you do so,
many processes you try to run as a user will fail. You mau not even be
able to log in...

In your other post, you said your Linux system was unstable, could it be
because you're trying to do strange stuff like this to it? What changes
have you made to your system?

How can I tell what windows manager I am using?

I want to start the Gnome Control Center, but don't know how, and I
want to run Enlightenment but it tells me in the help to go to Gnome
ControlCenter which I can't start.

Help!!

I am running After Step right now, and Gnome or KDE not sure I think
still Gnome but I wanted Enlightenment and not After Step.

I heard Enlightenment and Gnome combo has memory holes and needs to be
rebooted like a microsoft POS . . . but I liked the look of
enlightenment. Anyone have any feedback on that? I read about
Enlightenment on THIS newsgroup, do a search for it and you can read
about people complaining. Is it still beta?

Easy now, slow down and take a deep breath :)

You say you are running Afterstep, so that is the window manager you are
running. To start the Gnome Control Center, open up a term window and
run gnomecc

If you are running a Gnome panel, look for an icon that looks like an
old-time wooden toolbox.

If you want to switch to Enlightenment, open up the Gnome Control
Center, and click on the words "Window manager" at left. Then, click on
the word "Enlightenment" in the right-hand pane, and then the OK
button. E should start at that point.

If you do not see the word "Enlightenment", then click the
"Add" button, and fill out the form like this:
Name: Enlightenment
Command: enlightenment
Configuration command:

Check the box for "Session managed", and click OK. Then follow the steps
above to start E.

>I am running After Step right now, and Gnome or KDE not sure I think
>still Gnome but I wanted Enlightenment and not After Step.

A quick check: If you see a button at bottom left that looks like a
letter "K" on a gear, you're running KDE. If you see a button at lower
left that looks like a letter "G" styled to look like a footprint (or
vice versa), then you're running Gnome.

Gnome does have some memory leaks, but not too bad, tho Gnome 1.2 is
MUCH better on the memory leak front.

Enlightenment, on the other hand, is a flaming hairy memory-leaking pig!

Where are the configuration files for KMAIL kept? I want to copy all my
settings and email from one user on my machine to another.

I have fubar'ed the window manager settings for my primary login on my
laptop and have created another user, I don't want to bring over the messed
up window manager schtuff but would like to pull over the KMAIL settings
(accounts, and actual email) before I delete the original user.

Any suggestions?

(I'm not even going to attempt to fix the window manager problem, it's
BIZARRE and would take volumes to explain how it got that way... let it be
sufficient to say that I've sworn off
playing with themes and window managers until I understand Linux and x a LOT
better.)

Also if KDE and Gnome are windows managers, what is After Step and E

KDE and Gnome are not window managers. They are what's called a "desktop
environment". They provide a framework for other things, such as
theming, graphical components, Drag&drop, session management, etc.

E and Afterstep are window managers, and when run under KDE/Gnome, are
under their control.

i don't really know about memory leaks but as for enlightenment i was using
it and have recently switched to sawfish. has the same look and feel of e
but leaves a much smaller footprint in memory, written in lisp and is well

Dear Mr.Sharma,

Thanks for ur mail.u r right regarding user.Yes,i had set linuxconf for apache for user nobody as well as my root directory is /home/httpd/html too!.

But is it going to matter really for my client PC where it says Apache 1.3.12 is already running !but it throws the error 403 Forbidden by saying that i don't have permission to access the index.html.Will  i create a new user for webserver and use that user in my linuxconf? This is what u mean by that? Will it solve my problem?Obviously my home directory for this new user will be /home/httpd/html.Right??

I will try this tomorrow when i go to work to test ur other solution to access my index.html as http://142.147.161.125/index.html.If it works then hats off for ur quick reply!lol......

In any case,How the server understand Win95 client is nobody or new user? This seem logically incorrect.

Regarding httpd.conf in detail i will send its details when all these doesn't work!!

Till then bye & good night!

You do not need to give the full path while accessing
the homa page on the server.

You just need to say
http://142.147.161.125/index.html or simply
http://142.147.161.125

and NOT
http://142.147.161.125/home/httpd/home/html/index.html

I am assuming that you set the documentroot to
/home/httpd/html.

Warning: I am about to make an ass out of myself by expsoing my Linux
knowledge.

Does anyone here have some kind of detailed explanation/process that
explains what the process is of recompiling a kernel and/or program? I have
a PC running Redhat 6.0 and although an update will have teh correct driver
I need, IU want the experience on how to download the binary, recompile my
kernel, and get the video driver to work properly under Redhat.

What you would do is since you seemd that you don't want to use the old card
again.... Just pull the old card out, stick the new one in. then run
"netconf" w/o ", Thats the same program/utility as the network config in
Linuxconf, thats just short and JUST the network. when you go in you would
setup your new card if kzudu (spelling) didn't set it up. Also kzudu would
also, if you have it set to run at start-up, say that your old card has been
removed, want to remove it from the system? Thats just a few way(s) of how
to do that. You may need to recompile your kernel for adding the new card,
for the module for it. If you didn' recompile, and your still using the
"stock" kernel, the one that comes with it, Then I don't think you need to
worry about anything, I believe on the "stock" kernels they include every
NIC driver option.

                                                             HTH,
