1. SUSTAINABLE development ought to be started now - Taipei Times, Taiwan
The Executive Yuan's National Council for Sustainable Development has designated 2003 as the first year of Taiwan's national sustainable development. The organization worked out a Taiwan Sustainable Development Action Plan last year, listing more than 100 policies and measures that Taiwan must adopt in order to achieve sustainable development. It stipulates that the government needs to revise Agenda 21, which was drafted in the spring of 1999, and reformulate an Agenda 21 of Taiwan: National Sustainable Development Strategy Guidelines. At the same time, it has to assist local governments to draw up blueprints for local sustainable development....

the month to the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority, a group of six local governments
including High Point that is building the 3,000-acre lake as a water source. ...

A proposed three-lot subdivision in an unincorporated area near Alpine could eliminate parts of three trails and
public access to mountains, says the chairman of the city's Trails Committee.... Jim Price, trail planner for the
Mountainland Association of Governments, wrote a letter in support of preserving the trails to the county Planning

"Think globally, act locally." - That was an innovative paradigm in its time. The problem is
that the local sale is too small for today's problems. "Think local planet, act regionally," is a
new paradigm. Regional community acts to avoid the tragedy of the commons.
