The Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies (IMS), a service center within the College of Urban and Public Affairs, seeks a creative, entrepreneurial individual to serve as its Director. This position includes full benefits and excellent working conditions.

IMS was established by the Oregon State Board of Higher Education 12 years ago to assist the University in its efforts to advance the economic, environmental, and social goals of the communities in the Portland-Vancouver region, and to assist the communities of this metropolitan area to act collectively for a sustainable future.  Through its work, the Institute serves the main mission of the University and seeks to promote stronger connections between the resources of higher education and efforts to address critical metropolitan issues.

The candidate should have strong commitments to regionalism, community building, and to making connections between people and place.  They should be familiar with both the academic environment generally and regional and metropolitan issues more specifically.  The candidate will have a track record of creative accomplishment and a demonstrated ability to:

·         build programs;

·         work with researchers and apply findings in community/regional settings;

·         manage budgets;

·         create a productive and supportive working environment;

·         engage in fundraising; and

·         build strong working relationships with and among disparate interests.

The candidate should have experience working with boards, and a commitment to the board governance process. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required qualifications.

Minimum degree requirements are a terminal degree in a relevant field, a Ph.D., or equivalent education or experience. Preference will also be given to candidates with experience working with students and faculty, and teaching at the college level.  The Director of the Institute reports directly to the Institute’s Board and to the Director of the School of Urban Studies and Planning, and participates in the activities of the Research Council of the College.

Review of applications will begin on March 1, 2004 and the position will be open until finalists are identified.  For additional information, please consult the IMS web site (www.upa.pdx.edu/IMS/) or IMS directly at 503-725-5170.  A resume or CV (including email address if available), the names and contact information for three references, and a letter of interest  should be submitted to Lawrence Wallack, Chair, Search Committee, Mail Code SCH,  Portland State University, P.O. Box 751, Portland, OR  97207.

"Think globally, act locally." -  That was an innovative paradigm in its time. The problem is
that  the local sale is too small for today's problems. "Think local planet, act regionally," is a
new paradigm. Regional community acts to avoid the tragedy of the commons.
