SHELL RENEWABLES INVESTS
IN WYOMING WIND PROJECT
___________________________________________
On July 23, Shell Renewables' U.S. wind energy operation, Shell WindEnergy,
Inc., announced plans to acquire its first project with the purchase of the
50-MW Rock River I wind farm in Wyoming.
In a news release, Shell Renewables said the project, developed by wind farm
developer SeaWest WindPower, Inc., is "the first major step in achieving Shell
Renewables' wind energy strategy by moving from up from experimental to
commercial scale." The project, it added, is made up of 50 1-MW Mitsubishi wind
turbines.
The wind farm will be built over the summer and is scheduled to begin
generating electricity in October. All energy, plus the emissions reduction
credits produced, will be sold to PacifiCorp under a single 20-year power
purchase agreement (PPA). The project developers expect the wind farm to be
able to produce approximately 164 million kWh/yr, or enough to serve 25,000
average households.
David Jones, Director of Shell WindEnergy, Inc., said, "Wind is the fastest
growing area of energy generation world-wide with year-on-year growth of 25%,
and the U.S. market alone will see 1,500 MW of new capacity installed this year.
The acquisition of Rock River is important for Shell Renewables on two
fronts--it is our first major wind energy project and our first step in the U.S.
market. We aim in time to become a leading player in this sector with a
portfolio comprising both on- and offshore wind farms."
Chuck Davenport, SeaWest's Chairman, said, "Shell's participation in the Rock
River I project is evidence of continued globalization of wind energy. Projects
like Rock River typify today's modern wind energy industry. Now in our seventh
or eighth generation of technology, we have gained tremendous development,
construction, and operational experience. This combination of experience and
proven technologies provides truly global players, such as Shell Renewables, an
attractive entry into the wind energy market, and we look forward to working
with them on future opportunities."
Ed Berkel, Vice President North America, ShellWindEnergy B.V., emphasized the
significance of the move, saying, "We have been pursuing opportunities in the
U.S. for over a year and see tremendous potential for further business. The
space available makes onshore developments feasible in a far greater number of
locations than in Europe. The American Wind Energy Association estimates that
Wyoming alone has the potential for 50,000 MW. Rock River will provide valuable
"hands-on" wind farm operating experience that we can use in other locations in
the U.S. and elsewhere."
Over 1,000 MW of wind energy projects are currently being developed by Shell
Renewables in the U.S., Europe, and North Africa. Shell Renewables was awarded a
site off the northwest coast of England in the U.K. Government's offshore
licensing round.
