One source might be the Huntington Militia in Huntington, Long Island, NY. They
(and a Connecticut unit) built a whaleboat back in the Bicentennial years. IIRC
plans called for a small swivel-mount bow chaser as well. They might be of some
help for plans, etc.

Greetings everyone,
I am writing on behalf of the New Jersey Militia - Heard's Brigade to let you
know about a new project we have recently begun, and request your help.
We are in the initial phase of constructing an authentic looking whaleboat, the
type used by NJ privateers in the AWI approximately 25' long. We are asking for
any information on, or accounts of activities, you may have, that will help us
accurately portray the patriots and loyalist use of these craft in the NJ and
NYC area.
If there are any historical, nautical, woodworker, draftsman, fundraiser/
organisers out there that would like to get involved in this project we welcome
and appreciate your information and participation.
If you have anything helpful to send via e-mail contact us at
NJHBWhaleboatCommittee@yahoogroups.com if you have other information to mail or
phone send an e-mail and we will give you the address/ph.# that is best.
Below is a copy of the brochure we have made the boat pictured is the Middlesex
of Connecticut a similar craft.
NJ Whaleboat
Privateer Project
New Jersey Militia Heard's Brigade
(A 501C3 Non Profit Organization)
We are constructing a full size replica of an 18th Century coastal NJ whaleboat
at the Tuckerton Seaport Museum.
These boats were used in great numbers to capture supplies during the American
War for Independence.
The Purpose
To bring to the public's awareness the importance of the service and extent of
the sacrifice of our patriot citizens in the American Revolution.
The Benefits
*To provide opportunities to the public to help construct an authentic whaleboat
at the Tuckerton Seaport Museum School.
* To demonstrate the historic significance of whaleboat privateers at public
schools with actors to present demonstrations. (This really gets the kids'
interest.)
* To use during re-enactments at living history events.
* To transport the boat to commemorative events to honor those NJ patriots who
served and sacrificed for our country.
We believe it is the duty of all citizens to instill in the public, especially
children, the values, ideals and principles on which this country is founded.
This whaleboat project will educate people about the effort and sacrifice made
to create this country so that future generations will value and preserve their
rights and liberty.
In this we ask your help. Many nails can be bought for a dollar. Several dollars
can buy a board. Many planks can make a boat. A boat can make a lasting
impression on a young patriot. Many patriots will make a strong country.
We ask you to make a difference.
Make a donation of any amount.
Thank You
