NEWS RELEASE
Ringwood Manor to Host 10th Annual
July 4th Celebration
and Reading of the Declaration of Independence
Saturday, July 4, 2009 1-4 p.m.
Ringwood Manor State Park will host its tenth annual Independence Day
Celebration with Revolutionary War reenactors representing NJ
Militia-Heard’s Brigade, the 5th New Jersey Regiment, the Living History
Alliance, the Friends of Long Pond Ironworks, the 35th Regiment, and various
individual volunteers and reenactors. The event will feature a dramatic reading
of the Declaration of Independence from the Manor’s front porch along with
colonial activities and demonstrations to celebrate the 233rd anniversary of
American independence.
The Declaration of Independence was formally adopted on July 4th,
1776. The first public reading of the document was to a crowd in Philadelphia
four days later on July 8th. A day after that, on July 9th, it was first read
aloud to Washington’s Continental troops in New York City. News of its
creation spread throughout the colonies in America by traditional public
readings in large, open places such as town squares, churches, and taverns. The
event at Ringwood Manor attempts to recreate the excitement first felt when
heard by colonists 233 years ago.
The festivities will begin in front of Ringwood Manor at 1:00 p.m.,
when colonial era toys and games will be available for children to play with.
Young and old can sign their “John Hancock” on their own copy of the
Declaration using a traditional quill pen and ink. Demonstrations by colonial
crafters and displays will also be available. The ceremony itself will open at
2:00 p.m. with a Revolutionary War militia muster. The Declaration will be
delivered to Ringwood Manor and read at 2:30 p.m. to the crowd. The reading will
be followed by a traditional flag raising, ceremonial musket volley and ringing
of the Manor House bell. New this year will be colonial dancing demonstrations
and instruction by the North River Colonial English Country Dancers. They will
be performing on the porch of Ringwood Manor following the flag raising at 3
p.m. The historic blacksmith shop will be open and working the entire day. Free
watermelon slices will be available to the public. All are welcome to join the
fun!
Tours of the historic Ringwood Manor will be available before the event begins
at 10am, 11am, 12pm, and 1pm. Both the Independence Day celebration and Ringwood
Manor tours are free of charge. However, there is a $5 per car parking fee to
enter Ringwood State Park. I believe this is waived for period attired
reenactors. The event will take place rain or shine.
Independence Day at Ringwood Manor is sponsored by the North Jersey
Highlands Historical Society and the Ringwood State Park staff. For information,
