Hard Rock Regional Centre of National Institute
of Hydrology, Belgaum, Karnataka is organising
a National Seminar on "FOREST, WATER and PEOPLE,
FORWAP-2004" during 29th to 30th July 2004.
It is expected that more than 100 delegates from
Research organisation, Universities, Policy
Makers
NGO's and Government officials will participate
in the event. In this context, I am enclosing
the details of the seminar and invite you to take
part in the seminar. I request you to send an
abstract
on the themes mentioned in the brochure. Also, it
is requested the information may be circulated
among
your staff memeber for the possible contribution
in the form of research paper andparticipation.

The last date for the submission of abstract has

About Seminar

In recent decades, a host of experimental data
have been generated on interactions
between water and forests. Most of the studies
and research concentrated mainly on
water production, flood generation, soil erosion,
sedimentation, and so on. However,
there are other important issues such as global
climate change, quality of habitat,
bio-diversity, and ecologically sustainable
development which merit due attention
from the scientific community. In India,
inexorable population growth, exploitation
and often irreversible destruction of forests,
demands that planners must give access
to best possible scientific background for
managing the existing forests which play a
significant role in water resources development
and management.
Regional Center is actively involved in forested
hydrological research for the past
six years and completed a project sponsored by
UNESCO. which resulted in organising
the seminar in order to gather a group of
Scientists, Engineers, Foresters, NGO's
and Social workers taking into account of large
scale degradation of the existing
forest covers.

· Hydrological Processes in Forested Watersheds
· Impact of Land use and Land Cover Changes
· Enviornmental Aspects of Forested Watershed
· Peoples Participation in Watershed Management

The two days Seminar is Proposed to be held at

Belgaum, Karnataka, India during 29th & 30th July
2004.

Call for Abstracts

Authors intending to present papers on the above
themes are invited to submit abstracts
of 300-500 words which should include besides the
problem being studied, atleast one
paragraph pertaining to results and conclusions.
The authors may indicate the theme
under which the intended paper can be discussed.
Abstracts must have the full title,
name and affiliation, mailing address, telephone
and fax numbers and E-mail address.
The abstract should be typed in one and half
space in English and sent to the Convenor
/ Organisig Secretary.

ACCOMMODATION

The participants of the Seminar would be required
to arrange their own accommodation.
However, accommodation can be booked on prior
intimation against advance payment
in private hotels (single accommodation Rs. 200/-
per day and double accommodation
Rs. 350/- per day approximately.

ABOUT NIH

The National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) was set
up in 1978 under Ministry of Water
Resources, Govt. of India with HQ at Roorkee for
basic and applied research in the
areas of hydrology and water resources to solve
complex field problems. For technology
transfer and study of hydrological problems of
various agroclimatic regions of the country,
the institute has established six regional
centers. One of the first established centers
is the Hard Rock Regional Center, Belgaum to
tackle hydrological problems in the Hard Rock
Regions, mainly comprising of States of
Karnataka, Kerala, Goa and Parts of Maharashtra,

Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

ABOUT BELGAUM

Belgaum is situated on the border of Karnataka
State with Maharashtra and is well
connected by Roads and also by Trains. Climate is
generally pleasant with intermittent
rains during July. The State of Goa is located at
about 150 km away to the western side
of Belgaum.
