SHORT TERM TRAINING ON MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF
GROUND WATER FLOW AND MASS TRANSPORT THROUGH THREORY
AND HAND ON TRAINING

12th NOVEMBER to 9th DECEMBER 2004

ORGANISED BY SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

Sponsored by ESS Division, DST, Government of India

SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, JAWAHARLAL NEHRU
UNIVERSITY, NEW DELHI-110067

Groundwater modeling is an established tool to study
the aquifer response for a given input-output
stresses. The findings, in turn, help evolve and
select optimal groundwater exploitation and management
policy. Groundwater pollution in many countries is an
additional dimension to the groundwater problem. Mass
transport modeling in recent time gives rise to
understand the migration behavior of pollutant in the
saturated and unsaturated region. Mass transport
results are, in turn, used to devise the remedial
measures to clean up the aquifer system. Hard rock
aquifer hydrology is not fully understood as such
simulation of groundwater flow and mass transport in
the fractured aquifer is its initial stage. In recent
years, a number of universities and research
institutes in India and other developing countries
started to use groundwater flow and mass transport
models as groundwater management tools. This training
programs is being organised exclusively on ground
water modeling, where a trainee will be taught how to
model a system (conceptualization, grid design ,model
design, model calibration, sensitivity analysis, model
prediction and validation aspects) by himself through
hands on training program. So it has been planned to
conduct this advanced groundwater modeling course
which deals with all the advanced aspects of ground
water modeling with emphasis on practical training to
each individuals to model a groundwater flow system
and mass transport.

This four week training course will be organized by
School of environmental sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru
University, New Delhi. The topics to be covered along
with case studies in this course include:

-Review of groundwater flow and mass transport models
-Art of groundwater modeling
-Mathematical formulation of groundwater flow & mass
transport models
-Solution techniques to solve the mathematical
equation (Num. and Analy.)
-Data requirement for groundwater models (flow & mass
transport)
-Developing a conceptual model for groundwater flow
regime and mass transport
-Designing Models (designing grid system and boundary
conditions) and simulation
-Introduction to Modflow & MT3D
-Introduction to visual-Modflow (commercial software)
-Trial and error method model calibration
-Automated calibration (Inverse calibration)
-Sensitivity analysis and post audit of model
prediction
-Particle Tracking Analysis
-Model prediction and issues related to model
prediction & validation
-Model ethics and misuse of groundwater models
-Discussion over the existing case studies of flow and
transport models
-Hand-on practical training to prepare the model,
calibration, sensitivity analysis and prediction
(individual work)
-Discussion over the preparation of the model report
-Presentation of model results by individuals
-Focusing on the future modeling technology and
recommendations for future activities
-Case Studies Related to Modeling Aspects:
