Dear Friend,

Department of Water Resources Development & Management
(Formerly Water Resources Development Training
Centre), Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee -
247667 (Uttaranchal), India is organising an
International Symposium on "Recent Advances in Water
Resources Development and Management" (RAWRDM-2005)
during November 23-25, 2005.

INTRODUCTION

Effective development and management of water
resources, locally, regionally, and globally, is
central to human welfare, economic prosperity, and
environmental vitality. The professional field of
water resources development and management is
concerned with meeting needs associated with municipal
water supply and use, agriculture, industrial,
recreation, navigation, hydroelectric power
generation; solving problems related to water quality
in streams and aquifers, erosion and sedimentation,
protection of ecosystems and other natural resources,
storm water drainage, and flood damage mitigation; and
management to fulfill water needs structurally or
non-structurally.

The ever-increasing growth of population,
industrialization, steady rise in irrigation
activities, urbanization, and high level of living
standards are exerting tremendous pressure on the
available water, which is highly uneven in its spatial
and temporal distribution both in quantity and
quality. It has necessitated the optimum and economic
use of water. A lot of research is being carried to
generate knowledge and evolve technologies for water
resources development and management. Therefore, there
is a pressing need to put all these advancements at
one place for discussions in the forum common to
professionals working in the water sector.

OBJECTIVE

The Symposium is planned to bring policy makers,
planners, researchers, scientists, administrators,
engineers and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on
a common platform to share and discuss their
experiences, technological advancement and constraints
in implementation, and other issues related to water
resources development and management. The
deliberations of the symposium will be fruitful in
suggesting/recommending a policy framework for
improved water development and management.
Furthermore, scope of future research in the area of
water resources development and management for
sustainable growth will be outlined. With this in
view, the following themes are proposed for discussion
in the symposium proceedings:

* Water Resources System and Planning
* Drought and Flood Management
* Surface and Groundwater Development and Management
* Irrigation Water Management and Command Area
Development
* Agricultural System & Crop Diversification.
* Participatory Irrigation Water Management
* Hydropower Development and Management
