Hi all,

one idea that I had last night was to have a deliverables night--a
chance to show (scrubbed) deliverables such as wireframes, user/task
matrixes, personas, POCs, prototypes...in short, things that you've
used successfully. Be neat to talk about the tools you used, why you
did what you did, and how it was received.

From Triangle User Experience (triux.org):

As our User Experience Design Manager, you'll develop, evangelize and
execute the vision for both consumer-facing experiences (online and
in-store) for Nike's digital commerce-enabled sites. You'll be
responsible for benchmarking, conceptualizing, innovating and
developing an overall Experience Map for your respective area. You'll
work closely with internal functional groups, regional teams and
agencies to define next-generation consumer experiences. You'll
provide the overall vision and strategic leadership to drive the
global Experience Roadmap; collaborate with the regional, functional
and affiliate business teams, and with key strategic agencies to
establish the direction for interface design on Nike digital
properties; develop a global roadmap for interface development that
supports emerging digital commerce capabilities; and provide support
for regional and global initiatives that require interface design.
You'll collaborate with functional regional leads to establish project
goals and success metrics. You'll also establish vision and guidelines
that establish Nike as an authentic sports brand online and organize
our online capabilities in an easy-to-use, intuitive way. You'll
develop and apply new capabilities, future product concept integration
and connection/translation to non-digital consumer experiences and
executions, and lead third-party site collaborations and integration.
You'll also ensure the seamless digital consumer experience in all
retail, event, studio and other physical executions of our digital
commerce sites. You'll translate new ideas and concepts into relevant,
value-adding elements and stay up to speed on any significant digital
trends, and showcase the ability to adjust digital strategies and
executions accordingly. You'll also be relied on to stay intimately
aware of key regional and seasonal initiatives, and provide enticing,
innovative consumer experiences in support of those. You'll facilitate
regular and consistent site and consumer analysis to fuel future
experience design, and seek out industry benchmarking to ground Nike's
current level of experience within and across industries so an
improvement plan can be designed and continuously monitored. You'll
also manage agency relationships and specific projects. In addition,
you'll establish leadership summits across our internal and external
partners to develop consensus and communicate Nike's Experience
Roadmap across our digital commerce sites.

Requirements for the position include:

Bachelor's degree
6-10 years' experience in experience design or product management in
the software industry, preferably ASP or SAAS

experience design specific to digital

websites (strategy, conceptualizing, visual design, interaction design
and production)
Extensive experience working at senior levels to define target
experiences that map to consumer needs in a way that is brand
conscious and highly usable
To work at Nike, you don't need to be an athlete. But you need to
think like one. We do more than just sports. We do life. And we love
what we do.

Hi all,

I'm a local ambassador for UXnet (http://uxnet.org/). As its page
says, "UXnet creates effective, functional, and strategic networks to
enable cross-disciplinary collaboration between user experience
professionals. We connect people, organizations, resources, and ideas
to enable the growth and maturation of User Experience as a practice,
a community, and eventually a discipline."

To that end, it's a source for happenigns, news, events, and other
stuff around UX. It also provides an intersection of different
organizations that touch on UX. So, if you know of anything UX-ish
going on in the area, let me know & I'll post it to the UXnet events list.

I thought this was an interesting questionnaire poste to the SIG-IA
list today:
Towards a Shared Definition of User Experience
http://cost294.org/sig-ux-questionnaire.html

From the Web site:
Motivation
The lack of a shared definition of User eXperience (UX) not only
confuses or even misleads users/customers of a product/service, but
also undermines the effectiveness of researching, managing and
teaching UX. It is a challenge to reach a shared definition of UX by
converging different understandings about the meaning and scope of UX.
SIG UX at CHI'08 tackles this challenge by assembling a set of
existing definitions and viewpoints of UX and collecting opinions on
them from known UX researchers and practitioners as well as general
CHI'08 attendees with this questionnaire.

Best,
Susan

Thanks again to everyone for another great RUX meeting!!

Special thanks go to Stacy Surla and the Ironworks crew for hosting
our get-together. Thanks to Stacy for making the trek from DC!

Stacy's presentation, Local
Groups- How-To (and Why)
, provided us with some great ideas for
upcoming meetings as well as sparked really interesting conversations.
Her observation and our subsequent discussion about how many UX
professionals work in isolation was really fascinating to me - As Stacy
mentioned, there are many folks out there who may not even realize
they are practicing IA...Some food for thought?

Again, thank you and we'll see you at the May meetup where Tom
Illmensee & Sam Chapman of Circuit City will share their upcoming
presentation for UPA on card sorting.

Save the date - it's Wednesday, May 28. Location TBD.

Tell us what you think!

I was checking out the Slashdot.com RSS feed and stumbled upon this
article today. I found it interesting that Gartner cited "User
interface" as one of the top 10 upcoming technologies in the next 4
years. Not to mention the other Web-related items. You've got to love
that job security. ;-)

-Greg K

Source:
http://businessofit.blogspot.com/2008/05/gartner-reveals-top-10-technologies.htm\
l

/* Complete article follows sans comments */

Gartner Reveals Top 10 Technologies

"The good folks over at the Gartner Group have revealed the top 10
technologies that they believe will change the world over the next
four years:

    1. Multicore and hybrid processors
    2. Virtualization and fabric computing
    3. Social networks and social software
    4. Cloud computing and cloud/Web platforms
    5. Web mashups
    6. User Interface
    7. Ubiquitous computing
    8. Contextual computing
    9. Augmented reality
   10. Semantics

What caught my attention were items 1-4. I think that Gartner got it
right this time around. Muticore servers and virtualization will mean
that firms will need fewer boxes and apps can be easily moved from box
to box (and right out the door to an outsourced data center).
Workplace social networks and cloud computing means that the need for
a centralized IT department will go away. Firms will no longer need to
own/maintain the boxes that they use to run their firm's apps. With no
need to touch a box, there will be no need to have the IT staff
co-located with the boxes. Oh, oh -- can you hear your job going away?

What does this all mean, and more importantly what should a successful
IT staffer (or CIO) do today? The key to your future success is to
understand how IT is going to change and what you need to do to change
with it. IT is going to become much more about information and how it
can be used to help the business grow and prosper. This IT function is
going to leave the IT department as we know it today and will migrate
into the business unit itself. What this means to you is that you need
to know what your firm does, and even more importantly, how it does
it. The next question will be what information is needed by the
business units to improve how they do their work. This is what
tomorrow's IT staff will provide. Thanks Gartner for the peek into the
future!

I found a nice case study on the redesign of the GUI for Wells Fargo's
ATM machines. Granted, the Pentagram team was able to do a lot more
given the change to a touch screen interface but they really did a
good job exceeding the user's (and my) expectations...

Full article:
http://physicalinterface.com/view/that-design-is-money

Excerpts:
"...The objective for the new UI was to continue to offer quick and
easy cash withdrawals, while making the other services more visible
and accessible. Some of these services, such as purchasing stamps and
printing account statements, can be convenient for customers and they
save a trip to the post office or branch office. For Wells Fargo, it
is an additional source of revenue..." (Don't we all know this one!)

"...We thought that the new UI could be better than that. Instead of
just offering generic choices and complicated customization
procedures, the ATM should learn by itself what individual customers
do most often, and then make those things easier to accomplish..."

New City Media is looking for someone to lead our team in the area of
user experience and information architecture. Our current Director of
User Experience, Jim Vogt, is going off to graduate school at Carnegie
Mellon. We’re excited for him but it leaves us with a big hole!

You might be the person to fill it if:

you'€™re ready to lead our clients through the process of
understanding
their audiences, uncovering the real story, and designing experiences
that move people to act.

you've got 5 or more years experience working with user experience/
human factors/human computer interaction/information architecture -
whatever you want to call it. Not just building web sites - you need
to know your UX stuff. If you've never heard of Jared Spool, Jakob
Nielson, Steve Krug or Jesse James Garrett, don’t bother to apply.

you enjoy mentoring and developing the strengths of others.

you like the idea of working in small teams with peers. By
β€œpeers” we
mean people who know their stuff and can be counted on to deliver. Not
a lot of hierarchy or bureaucracy.

you're comfortable giving presentations and teaching user experience
principles in any setting.

you want to live in a high-tech college town in the mountains, while
working for world-class clients. Think œ10 minute commute€ and
€œ20
minutes to the Appalachian Trail.

You’ll lead the efforts of 3-4 other UX architects, in addition to
working on your own projects. For each project, you’ll work with a
project manager who will be responsible for more of the business side
of the project. The UX architect uncovers client goals, researches
audience needs, and creates an overall plan for the experience. He or
she then stays involved throughout the project to ensure that as the
designs come together and production moves forward, the project is
staying true to the original vision in every aspect. While keeping the
client’s goals in mind, the UX architect is an advocate for the
overall delight of the end-user.

New City Media is 19 people creating online experiences that help our
clients tell their stories with impact. Our clients include National
Geographic Magazine, Virginia Tech, Imperial College London and Kiawah
Island. We’re located in the Corporate Research Center adjacent to
Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. The CRC is home to over 150
technology companies with more than 2,000 total employees.

We offer a competitive salary based on your qualifications and
experience. Send your resume and work samples by email to Jane Horner
at jane@.... No phone calls please.

An interview w/Schalk Neethling (of dzone.com) on how Web
Accessibility can affect the bottom line:
http://css.dzone.com/news/web-accessibility-and-your-bus

This is a spin-off of the quick conversation we had at the Refresh
Richmond/User Group meet-up a few weeks back, for those who were there.

This is the kind of material that business owners need to read to
understand the importance of web standards and accessibility.

What do you all think?

Smashingmagazine.com just did a good study/article on design patterns
of sign-up forms and part 2 just came out today...

Part 1:
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/07/04/web-form-design-patterns-sign-up-form\
s/

Part 2:
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/07/08/web-form-design-patterns-sign-up-form\
s-part-2/

"Bottom line" from both parts of the study of 100 sites:

• the registration link is titled "sign up" (40%) and placed in the
right upper corner,
• sign-up forms have a simplified layout to avoid distractions for
users (61%),
• sign-up forms are one-page-forms (93%),
• sign up forms attract visitors by explaining the benefits of
registration (41%),
• titles of the input fields are highlighted bold (62%)
• no trend in the label alignment can be identified,
• designers tend to use few mandatory fields,
• designers tend to use few optional fields,
• vertically arranged fields are preferred to horizontally arranged
fields (86%).
• sign-up forms don't have any hover, active or focus-effects (84%),
• hints and help are either static (57%) or dynamic (33%) and appear
below the input field (57%) or on the right side of the field (26%),
• static validation is as popular as dynamic validation — no trend
toward Ajax;
• e-mail confirmation is not used (82%),
• password confirmation is used (72%),
• captcha can be used or not used (48% vs. 52%),
• cancel button is not used (92%),
• the submit-button is left-aligned (56%) or centered (26%),
• thank-you message motivates users to proceed with exploring the
services of the site (45%).

Thanks for sending the links to these articles, Greg.

Some interesting observations here. I would, however, highlight that
their findings are simply WHAT these 100 sites do, not necessarily WHY
they do them nor whether they are better or worse necessarily. I'd
recommend referring to Luke Wroblewski's fabulous book on forms design
to determine best methods for users. See
http://www.lukew.com/ff/index.asp (interestingly, his current post is
on this very set of articles!).

Nicely done.
