=== ABOUT EDUI ===

http://eduiconf.org

If you don't yet know what EdUI is all about, be sure to check out
http://eduiconf.org . In short, EdUI (the name is a marriage of "Edu"
and "UI") is a conference for web professionals, particularly those in
higher ed or at similarly large institutions, that offers full-day
workshops and peer presentations on user experience and user interface
issues like usability, design, coding, rich media, and social media.

Our speaking lineup features some of the top experts in the web
industry, including Jared Spool as keynote, alongside your peers who
are doing extraordinary things at their institutions. We know training
and travel budgets are tight right now, but we guarantee this is one
of the best values you'll find for professional development! Other
events featuring similar speaker line-ups often cost $1000+ and
require travel to expensive cities. EdUI is held in beautiful,
historic, and affordable Charlottesville VA, home of Thomas Jefferson
and a popular tourist destination http://tinyurl.com/lfmpn3 .

=== TWO NEW SESSIONS JUST ADDED! IPHONE DEV AND WEB APPS VS. WEBSITES ===

Steve VanBrackle presents "Web Development for the Apple iPhone"
http://www.eduiconf.org/session/iphone-vanbrackle/

This session will discuss and demonstrate the tools that Apple
provides for building web applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
An overview of the steps involved in laying out an interface,
customize controllers and adding handlers and code will be covered.

---

Nick Gould presents "What’s in a Name? Guidelines for Designing
Applications vs. Websites"
http://www.eduiconf.org/session/apps-vs-sites-gould/

Recent advances in rich user interface technologies such as DHTML,
AJAX, and Flash have blurred the already fuzzy distinction between
websites and web applications. In fact, many websites actually combine
application-like experiences with website-like experiences with no
ill-effects.

Of course, end users don’t know (or care) whether they are interacting
with a site or an application, they just want to accomplish their
goals–and they have high expectations of usability in all cases. But
does the distinction still matter for interaction designers? Can this
distinction help us to better leverage user expectations and behaviors
towards a more usable and successful experience? Can the
classification of an interface as an application or a website assist
in the speed or effectiveness of the design process? Perhaps…

In this talk, Nick will review the different user and task
characteristics of websites versus web applications and explore the
design guidelines that these characteristics imply. He might also tell
a joke.

WHAT
User experience professionals often find themselves working on projects with tight deadlines, tighter budgets, and unreasonably high expectations for success. Too often user research, usability, and design processes are compressed or even cut entirely for the sake of time, while development and business analysis time is increased. As we UX professionals become more involved with agile development methods, we have discovered novel approaches to user-centered design that are adaptable to any budget or deadline.

This discussion will explore how user research, usability, IA and design practices are adapted and thrive in projects that seem inhospitable to UXD.

Two hours of UX war stories from the trenches!

WHO
You should attend if you are one or more of these roles:
    * Information architects (IAs)
    * Interaction designers (IxDs)
    * Visual designers
    * Project managers
    * Developers
    * Business analysts
    * Agile enthusiasts & critics alike

We will discuss:
    * How to provide timely and valuable UX support to stressed web development teams
    * How to let go and modify research/design/development dogmas
    * How to advocate for users when time for user research and usability are unavailable
    * How to balance rigor, quality, and speed

Free pizza and soda for the first 15 attenders, sponsored by Regular Joe Consulting, LLC .

I am currently an employee at Quidsi Inc. one of the fastest growing e-commerce
companies. We are looking for UX designers to join our team. If you are
interested or know anyone that might be please contact me.

Below is a brief summary of the company as well as job description.

As one of the fastest growing e-commerce companies in the country, Quidsi is the
parent company of Diapers.com (baby care), Soap.com (health, beauty and
household essentials), BeautyBar.com (prestige beauty), Wag.com (pet products)
and YoYo.com (toys). We like to work hard and play hard, always striving to
improve our business, our people, our culture and the experience for our
customers. If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of, the
next step is yours. Send us your resume and come join a group of critical
thinkers and innovators energized by the passion to explore "what if" (the
meaning of Quidsi in Latin). For more information about our company, please go
to www.Quidsi.com.

Quidsi is making ecommerce a little easier through "wow" customer service,
industry-leading logistics and an intuitive, forward-thinking website
experience. The Quidsi culture – a classic startup – is widely known as
entrepreneurial, fiercely intelligent, team-oriented and deeply creative.

The User Experience Designer role is unique, and for the right candidate it will
prove an amazing opportunity. Employing the UX methodologies from Google and
the UK web design firm, Clearleft, the position will own the entire end-to-end
process of bringing new functionality to the site: from scoping the project with
the business owners to wire-framing/prototyping a proof of concept to creating
the interactive elements to shepherding the new functionality live into
production.
Over the next two years, our goal is to create the most elegantly usable
ecommerce websites so we're looking for someone who wants to both be part of a
dynamic, creative team and have ambitions to be a rock-star UX designer.

The User Experience Designer should demonstrate a rich but versatile aesthetic,
be a little geeky when it comes to usability, and intuitively understand and
solve for the nuances of ecommerce design patterns. In addition, and quite
significantly, the role needs to interface with our marketing and merchandizing
teams to help them realize their business goals.

Responsibilities
• Meet with Marketing and Merchandising stakeholders to define functional
solutions for business problems
• Create wireframes or prototypes as proof of concept
• Design interaction, look and feel
• Write non-technical specification for programmers
• Final-pass QA

Basic Qualifications
• BA/BS or MA/MS in Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction
Design, Human Factors or related field.
• 2+ years of experience in designing and prototyping for the web; ecommerce
experience is preferred, but not required.
• Knowledge of user-centered design principles coupled with a "don't make me
think" understanding of usability.
• Strong Photoshop and Illustrator skills; high-fidelity prototyping experience
is a plus.
• Ability to write non-technical specs for programmers
• Demonstrated ability to manage expectations, meet firm deadlines and thrive in
a dynamic work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of coding/scripting is not necessary, but a good understanding of
what HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are capable of bringing to the modern web is
desired.
• Above all else: good intuition and a little quirkiness.

This position is conveniently located in Jersey City, NJ, a four minute ride
from the World Trade Center and just outside the Exchange Place PATH Station.
Bordering the Hudson River, our offices have spectacular panoramic views of
Manhattan and New Jersey.

Quidsi Inc is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
