> POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN RIVER ECOLOGY
>
> A post doctoral position is available for study of the effect of
global warming on trophic interactions between macroinvertebrates and
fish in streams.
>
> The primary focus is to test the hypothesis (see Optimal Foraging
Theory) of an increase in the niche breath and in the energy
expenditures (movements, metabolic rate increase) of a small benthic
fish, Cottus gobio in relation with an increase of competition when water
temperature increases. A preliminary work demonstrated the importance of
food resources as one of the main limiting factor for the fish population
in the studied stream. We also expect significant effects on the
structure of the macro-invertebrate community.
>
> A two months field experiment is planed during summer 2007 in two
small tributaries of the Drome river (French Alps) differing mainly by
their thermal regime. Fish gut contents will be sampled simultaneously
with the invertebrate community and fish movements will be monitor using
PIT tag.
>
> This work is a part of a 2 years collaborative project involving 5
researchers and engineers (aquatic ecologist and modellers) and funded by
the French Ministry of Environment. The project leader, Didier Pont, will
be directly involved in this field experiment.
>
> The successful candidate will work with the team of principal
investigators on the field and later at the laboratory, being in charge
of both sampling and fish movements recording, gut contents analysis
(macro-invertebrate prey determination), all data analysis and
publications.
>
> Qualifications are a doctorate degree in aquatic ecology with
specialization on fish or macroinvertebrate ecology. Strong field skills
and availability to work well in a cooperative environment are necessary.
French speaking appreciated but not obligatory.
>
> Position is based in the Hydrobiological Unit Research (HYAX) of
Cemagref at Aix en Provence (South France). The appointment will be for
18 months (May 2007 to August 2008).
