Description
This is a mailing list for people interested in remote imaging and with similar interests. Its aim is to promote sharing of information among weather satellite receiving enthusiasts. This is a friendly group !
RIG was started by Henry Neale in 1984, a long time ago when the use of computers was barely conceivable. The Framestore ruled supreme and amateur reception of HRPT would have been laughed at. Everything was easy to receive, details readily available and satellite operators actually encouraged reception by ordinary people by supplying circuits and constructional details. Encryption was a word never heard of. Bob Popham the NOAA PR guru would attend amateur events and help anyone he could. The world in 1984 was full of promise and hope. RIG flourished and to this day is still the biggest archive on home construction. Today, the world is a more complex place, demodulation cannot simply be performed with a phase locked loop and a multiplier, there are no easy building blocks for Viterbie or Reed-Solomon and so far an ultra fast I & Q to USB2 interface has eluded the amateur community. Here is our next challenge.........
RIG-L has a history and pedigree of helping people build equipment. There are more home construction related posts than any other list. It is important for the amateur community to stay tight and focused. Post that encourage members to migrate to other smaller groups may be moderated to maintain the integrity of this group. Posts that overtly advertise other groups may be moderated. Posts that refer members to other groups to find answers instead of replying directly on RIG-L will be moderated. A header or footer providing it is not overt is mostly acceptable. Criticism of individuals, groups or any flaming is specifically prohibited.
We are a fragile community and need to help each other.
