Telemar muda códigos DDD no dia 27

servidor a qual faz a consulta no banco. Por que usar um
ou outro ?

2) Eu quero atender vários usuários simultaneamente
(todos que se logarem). Com devo resolver este problema ?
Seria criando uma thread para cada Login ? E se for,

Obrigado.

Siemens busca desenvolvedores para seu celular Java
IDG News Service/Europa

primeiros celulares GSM a chegar no mercado suportando a tecnologia Java.

O pacote custa US$ 590 e o
aparelho sozinho será vendido por US$ 557.

As medidas fazem

acontece no Expo Center Norte.

Expo; S3 - Software Solutions Show; Conhecer 2002; Encontro
Latino-americano de ERP; e a segunda edição do Fórum de Revendas.

Contra o Java, MS solta linguagem J#.Net

A nova ferramenta utiliza apenas

http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualj/jsharp/beta.asp. O J# deve ser
instalado sobre a versão beta 2 do Visual Studio.Net.

MS desiste de cancelar certificações MCSE

Quinta-feira, 11 de Outubro de 2001 - 16h50

IDG Now!

No terceiro trimestre do ano

necessidades. “Queremos continuar considerando esses especialistas
valiosos.”

Contudo, disse o executivo, a Microsoft continua incentivando os MCSEs a

Windows 2000.

********************
Java Programming Language Basics
     Converting a String to a Numerical Value

A common need of the Java technology developer is to convert
strings to numerical values. Once converted, you can manipulate
that value like any other data primitive (for instance, an int,
float, or double). The problem is, when you read from a file,
get a command line argument, get an applet parameter, or just
prompt for input from a text field on a form, you always start
with a String object. Treating that String as a primitive
requires an extra step, the conversion.

To convert a String to a primitive, you must understand
how to use a wrapper class. Every primitive has an
associated wrapper class. These wrapper classes allow you to
treat primitives as objects. In addition, these classes contain
methods that permit manipulation of these objects, appropriate
for the data type.

The following list shows the mapping from primitive type to
wrapper class. In almost all cases, the wrapper class has the
same name as the primitive data type, with the first letter
capitalized.

Primitive to Wrapper Class

byte - Byte
short - Short
int - Integer
long - Long
char - Character
float - Float
double - Double
boolean - Boolean

Each of these wrapper classes (except the Character class) has a
method that allows you to convert from a String to the specific
primitive type.

Simply call the method from the appropriate wrapper class,
and your String is converted to a primitive type.

For instance:

String myString = "12345";
int myInt = Integer.parseInt(myString);

converts the contents of the String variable myString to an int
object myInt. The conversion is that easy. The only trick is
that the conversion for each data type involves a uniquely
named method in each wrapper class.

All but the boolean conversions are done by similarly named
methods, but still all the method names are different:

byte - Byte.parseByte(aString)
short - Short.parseShort(aString)
int - Integer.parseInt(aString)
long - Long.parseLong(aString)
float - Float.parseFloat(aString)
double - Double.parseDouble(aString)
boolean - Boolean.getBoolean(aString)

There is one exception: The Character class has no such
method, so you have to ask String for the character with
the charAt method:

// The variable e is the character e in the string Hello
      String hello = "Hello";
      char e = hello.charAt(1);

If the String contents cannot be converted to the requested
primitive type, then a NumberFormatException is thrown.
This is a runtime exception, so the conversion code
does not have to be in a try-catch block.

********************
Making Sense of the Java Class Libraries
     The NumberFormat Class

Printing numbers to the screen can produce some odd or undesired
results.

For instance:

public class PrintNum {
     public static void main(String args[]) {
       double amount = 400000.00;
       System.out.println("He paid " + amount
                            + " for the house.");
         }
}

results in:

He paid 400000.0 for the house.

Adding the symbol $ in the string won't improve these results
because primitives print with the maximum number of non-zero
digits for that type, and commas are not included in the result.

You can control display format and arrange input into the needed
output format by using the NumberFormat abstract class in the
java.text package.

This class provides the interface to format and parse
numbers, and includes methods to determine which locales
have number formats and what their names are.

The class has methods for three standard formats:

* getInstance or getNumberInstance
   gets a format for the normal number format, such as
   600,000
* getCurrencyInstance
   gets a format for the currency number format, such as
   $600,000.00
* getPercentInstance
   gets a format for displaying percentages, such as 56%

To format a primitive, start by returning an object of type
NumberFormat by calling on one of the above methods. To use the
previous example to display $400,000, you call:

NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance();

To be certain the amount is formatting correctly for a specific
country, you specify the locale with:

NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance(Locale.US);

Now, the program above can be rewritten as follows:

import java.text.*;
import java.util.Locale;

public class PrintNum {
   public static void main(String args[]) {
     // Amount to be formatted
     double amount = 400000.00;
     // Returns an object of type NumberFormat
     NumberFormat nf =
        NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance(Locale.US);
     // Calls the format method on the NumberFormat object
     // to format the amount as desired and prints the
     // results to the screen
      System.out.println("He paid " +  nf.format(amount)
                            + " for the house.");
         }
}

Results in:

He paid $400,000.00 for the house.

********************
Program Challenge
    Numbers Conversion

Use what you learned to create an application that reads
arguments from the command line. The rules for handling
command line arguments are as follows:

* If the argument is an integer, add the value to the answer.
* If the argument is a floating point number, multiply the
   answer by the value.
* If the argument is neither, display the invalid argument.

Once the arguments are processed, display the resulting
value as currency, with the currency symbol, commas between
thousands (assuming US locale), decimal point, and two digits
after the decimal point.

When executed with the following command line:

java Numbers 1 2 3 4 5 2.3 3 4 4444.4 a

Your program should produce results similar to the following:

Arg: 10 invalid (a)
The answer is $184,442.59

Java Bits
    AWT Versus Project Swing

A common misconception is that Project Swing is a replacement
for the Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT). In fact, Swing is a set
of mostly lightweight components built on top of the AWT.

Originally AWT was designed to create simple interfaces
for applets. Swing provides replacements for AWT's
heavyweight components and also includes components and
tools commonly used in more complex user interfaces.

A heavyweight component relies on the local platform's windowing
system to determine the look and feel of components. Each
heavyweight component has a peer class from the package
java.awt.peer that is responsible for the interactions between
the component and the local platform, such as the Mac, Windows,
and Solaris(TM) operating environments to display and
manipulate the object.

A lightweight component, on the other hand, is written completely
in the Java programming language and does not have a native
peer. To accomplish the look and feel of a specific platform,
you can use Swing's Pluggable Look and Feel architecture and API.

In application programming, the AWT package provides

* Layouts for organizing components within a pane
* Event handling mechanisms to manage the functionality
   of AWT or Swing components like buttons, text fields, or text
   areas.

To complete a complex application written in the Java programming
language, you'll need to understand a little about AWT, and a
lot about Project Swing.

Program Challenge Solution

This is one possible solution to the Program Challenge:

import java.text.*;
import java.util.Locale;

public class Numbers {
    public static void main(String args[]) {

      // Initialize total
      float answer = 0;

      // Working variable
      float number;

      // Loop through all the command line args
      for (int i=0; i < args.length; i++) {

        try {

          // First try to convert arg to an int
          number = Integer.parseInt(args[i]);
          // Add to total if int
          answer += number;

        } catch (NumberFormatException intTry) {

          try {

            // Next try to convert arg to a float
            number = Float.parseFloat(args[i]);
            // Multiple to total if float
            answer *= number;

          } catch (NumberFormatException floatTry) {

            // Display message if neither int nor float
            System.err.println("Arg: " + (i+1) +
              " invalid (" + args[i] + ")");

          }
        }
      }

      // Create a currency display format with Locale included
      NumberFormat nf =
                  NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance(Locale.US);

      // Display output as US currency format
      System.out.println("The answer is " + nf.format(answer));
    }
}

By   John Evdemon

Is XML required for Web services? Not necessarily. Developers have been
designing and building "Web services-like" solutions for several years -
long before the term Web services (or the Web, for that matter) existed.
RPC introduced the concept of location transparency - distributed
objects (DO) that could be located and utilized regardless of their
location on the Network. Clients used IDL for describing and contracting
services with distributed objects.

The Good
Web services initially appear to be Web-based versions of the old DO
technologies we've been using for the past 10-15 years. While they share
many of the basic concepts associated with DOs, they're designed to be
accessible across company firewalls and to enable loosely coupled
business process integration. Tightly coupled multienterprise systems
have been around for decades, but they rely on vendor-specific tools,
opening custom ports in your firewall and some proprietary data
formatting or marshaling techniques. Web services' loose coupling and
support for open standards enables a service to be modified without
disrupting other components. This is very difficult in traditional
client/server environments.

The term Web services may be a bit of a misnomer. Web services are
really the evolution of multitier client/server infrastructures. One
vision of Web services is to change developers' perceptions about the
Internet. The Internet (not just the Web) is no longer an external
network.

It's a server (albeit a very large and insecure one) for systems
deployment.

The Bad
Web services aren't yet ready for high-volume, highly available
production deployments. Of the available specifications, SOAP is
probably the most mature, and has been deployed by numerous vendors
within their products. Robustness, however, is not necessarily part of
its maturity. SOAP's simplicity sacrifices some of the robustness
expected in more traditional environments, such as type safety,
versioning, and guaranteed delivery. The current UDDI spec lacks support
for distributed queries or generic query syntax, and is not being
developed by a standards body.

Reliance on a Web service mirrors the old "vendor-proprietary traps"
that companies fell into in the past. If company A relies on a Web
service provided by company B, what happens to company A when (if)
company B goes out of business, or ceases to offer the previously
available Web service?

Security is always an issue - especially where the Internet is concerned.
Using HTTP for RPC mechanisms (as recommended by SOAP) hides the
underlying intention of the packets from most firewalls since the
firewall thinks it's just passing along HTTP requests.

The Ugly
To paraphrase Alan Greenspan, there appears to be an "irrational
exuberance" regarding registry-based initiatives. Many companies will
use Web services only if there is a clear competitive advantage/ROI.

I believe we'll see these registry-based initiatives mirror recent
trends in the B2B space. Private registries will be implemented by large
firms to enhance communications with their internal departments (since
many of these departments are larger than some corporations).
Horizontally oriented corporations will be the largest publishers to use
publicly available registries.

There's a potential backlash against XML if it continues to be applied
to situations that aren't necessarily appropriate. This is especially
true for Web services: anything touted as a "revolution" usually fails
to live up to the inflated levels of expectation. As with past
initiatives, evangelists should avoid trends unless there's a
demonstrated need for the technology. Businesses resolve their issues in
a low-cost, highly reliable manner - not necessarily by jumping on the
next technology bandwagon coming down the road.

XMLEdge 2001 and Web Services Edge 2001 West Coast

By   WSJ

The buzz around Web services is enormous. Every day more and more
developers are asking themselves if Web services should be used in their
next project. Microsoft views the Internet and Web services as a
complete development platform. Other companies view it as a set of
complementary protocols. WSJ asked seven leading i-technology players
for their expert opinions on the world of Web services.

WSJ asked those at the very heart of the emerging Web services paradigm:
What are Web services? How might they change business as we know it?

Andy Roberts, Chief Technology Officer
Bowstreet, Inc.
Portsmouth, New Hampshire

"Web services are software components exposed on the Web using standard
protocols such as HTTP and data formats such as XML. Web services enable
software systems to call each other over the Internet, as well as on
intranets, independent of the 'back-end technology' that's being used.

The generic markup concept behind XML is about separating information
>from its descriptive metadata, so that people can repurpose information
in different contexts, using different devices.

Web services is about breaking applications into pieces, so that units
of functionality can be repurposed in similar manner.

By exposing functionality using standard XML data formats, rather than
hiding behind a particular fixed presentation for humans to view via a
browser, that functionality can be repurposed for different uses by
different applications on different platforms in different contexts. Web
services thus enable business processes from different providers to be
combined in new and different ways. For example, a product manufacturer
can provide product configuration, shipping, and financing services, all
rolled up into one service, even though they are provided by different
suppliers.

Without Web services, the Web enables individual businesses to reach out
to customers, but only through 'silos' or 'one-to-one' connections. Web
services enable a new kind of virtual business, brought about by
connecting multiple business processes together within a software node,
and redeploying it as composite, or aggregated, service."

David Litwack, President & CEO
Silverstream Software, Inc.
Billerica, Massachusetts

"Web services is an important technology.

However, the really important thing that's happening is that the
industry is going through a once-in-a-decade transformation to a new
application paradigm - a new way of building applications.

I'd like to draw a comparison with client/server. Client/server wasn't a
specific technology. It was the culmination of a set of technologies -
graphic user interfaces, relational databases, networks, and personal
computers - that resulted in a new way of building applications. And
that way of building applications was very important because it was a
clean separation of information from the user interface. It transformed
the way we use computers in businesses from what had been predominantly
an administrative or clerical function, to having the corporate
repository of information available to everybody that had a computer on
their desktop. That was the revolution.

What's happening today is we have a set of very important technologies -
Java, J2EE, XML, SOAP, WSDL, UDDI, HTTP, the Internet - that have
reached a level of maturity where we can think about building the
applications in a completely different way. The Gartner Group calls this
a services-oriented architecture and Web services is certainly a key
piece of that.

The important thing about a services-oriented architecture is a clean
separation of the transaction, information, or service from the audience
where it's supposed to be delivered. Put another way, it turns the
traditional design paradigm backward, the traditional being:
architecting in who the audience for the application will be. In a
services-oriented architecture you shouldn't know or have any design
criteria that involves knowledge of who the audience is. That is so
important today, because through the Internet we can deliver
applications to people we've never met or to devices that haven't been
invented yet. We can deliver applications inside or outside a firewall.

So a services-oriented application meets the needs of e-businesses in
the Internet age because it allows us to build applications that can be
flexibly deployed in the future to unknown future audiences. Web
services are great but we don't want to deliver Web services in the same
way to everybody. We want to tailor Web services depending on who the
users are - what their jobs are, whether they're high net worth
individuals, or retirees, whether they're business partners, corporate
customers, or your own salespeople, whether they're inside or outside
the firewall. We may increasingly tailor Web services whether it's the
weekend or the week, or based on what device they are connected from.

Someday, with GPS in wireless devices we may want to tailor the service
depending on where they are, because with GPS devices we'll know where
they are within 10 meters. These are all parts of the services-oriented
puzzle."

David Clarke, President & CEO
Cape Clear Software Inc.
Walnut Creek, California

"For us it's all about opening up development, with a small d, to a much
wider community of developers than those who only understand Java and
Enterprise Java. The application server vendors still think of
Enterprise Java as the central and fundamental programming model - so
although they're beginning to provide SOAP stacks, they tend to view
SOAP as just another way of connecting into the app server. 'We support
TCP, IOP, RMI, and SOAP,' they're saying - so they seem to view SOAP as
a protocol instead of, as we do, as a world-shattering new paradigm."

Simon Phipps, Chief Technology Evangelist
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Santa Clara, California

"Web services is a new name for an old idea. It was called RPC, it's
been called IOP, it's been called COM, it has been called all sorts of
things.

This time it's going to be big because it's going to allow linear cost
growth while providing access to exponential business opportunity.

Companies are going to be able to discover each other over the Web and
automatically initiate trading behavior. We're right on the cusp of that
at the moment. The place beyond that is what happens when Web services
meets wireless technologies, at which point the consumer will come back
into the picture again, and we'll begin to see consumers being able to
use the context of where they are to have options presented to them by
the swarm of devices, software, and networks around them.

The place where we're headed to after that - this is probably about 3
years out - is a place of connected Web-smart services being conveyed
over mixed media like over wireless, also over high speed connections
into the home, and over 3G connections into more powerful wireless
devices. The mixed nature of the client space in that world is what
makes open standards even more important."

Tyler Jewell, Principal Technology Evangelist
BEA Systems, Inc.
San Jose, California

"Developers find it incredibly easy to start working with BEA technology.
It's not just about our application server and implementation of
servlets, JSPs, and EJBs any more, it's about enabling developers to
leverage their J2EE knowledge into a variety of different areas
including Web services.

Our clients are definitely interested in Web services, but when we go
and talk to BEA clients they're looking for ways to use Web services
with J2EE.

I know there's been a lot of talk about Web services as a new platform,
but BEA actually views Web services as an extension of J2EE - it's just
an exposing of the existing applications and programs that they've
already written, but in a new format. One of the big things that we're
doing with WebLogic 6.1 is finding ways to take programming expertise
that Java developers already have and converting that directly to Web
services expertise.

So with WLS 6.1 we now have point-and-click autogeneration from EJBs to
Web services, and we have that available today."

Barry Morris, CEO
IONA Technologies PLC
Dublin, Ireland

"There is a big difference between service-orientated architectures in
the abstract and Web service implementations in the real world. IONA has
been building service-oriented systems for ten years and has a deep
knowledge of the technology. Our systems have always been built on
standards but we are embracing a new set of standards, such as SOAP,
J2EE, and XML, and we are utilizing them in our Web services products.

IONA now has developed XMLBus, a Web services development system that is
all about service-oriented architectures built in XML. We have taken a
leadership role in the new standards bodies defining SOAP, UDDI, WSDL
etc.

We are also active at the higher level, at the business process
choreography level, with support of ebXML and Rosettanet and that level
of standard. XMLBus was created to build exactly those kinds of systems.

Our large customer base is moving increasingly toward services based on
standards like XML and SOAP. We are seeing activity short term in
intranet implementation and expect real Internet-based integration
around Web services in the next six to twelve months. IONA is committed
to meeting the needs of the large enterprise market. Toward that end we
have recently introduced the IONA B2B Integrator, based on our
acquisition of a leading firm in Business Process Collaboration. The
combination of B2B Integrator, XMLBus, and our unique expertise in
standards-oriented architectures, positions IONA for leadership in the
Web services market."

Uche Ogbuji, CEO
Fourthought, Inc.
Boulder, Colorado

"Web services is not as glamorous as its usual billing has it. It is
merely a way to assemble a toolkit that allows rapid development and
deployment of collaborative applications. It takes advantage of Internet
protocols for inexpensive implementation and XML data formats for
extensible expression of data that is readily processed by people or
agents.

Both of these core technologies also bring the advantages of broad
adoption and support in almost every vendor tool released in the past
year or so.

Where the fruits of innovation are conveniently dispensed on the Web,
Web services will lower the barrier to deploying such innovations.
Service providers will be able to get their products in place rapidly,
update them with relatively little pain, and advertise them to a
potentially unlimited marketplace.

However, there are dangers. Many of the champions of Web services have
every reason to combine the enticing openness of Web services with
clever tricks to keep developers tied to their products. The best
safeguard against this is to minimize the coupling of systems using Web
services as much as possible. This means not insisting on quirks of data
format, encoding or protocol, but allowing strong support for
negotiating all these factors. It also means leaning on other open
standards as much as possible: for instance, service descriptions and
classifications might better take advanatge of the well-established
resource description framework (RDF) rather than reinvented XML formats.

Fourthought, being providers of software and solutions for XML
applications, is very active in the community trying to avoid these
pitfalls, and finding the right practical mix of Web services
technologies for our clients. "

Conclusions

Distributed computing technologies have been around for a while and so,
to that extent, the ideas behind Web services are nothing new.

But anyone looking at Web service technologies for some particular
technical characteristic that's getting people excited about them won't
find it. The reason that Web services are so exciting isn't any
particular technical quality they have. Rather, it's the unprecedented
agreement that the new paradigm is getting from so many parties who
traditionally have been business rivals.

There are still disagreements, but a standard foundation is established
and that foundation is growing every day. One note of caution, amid all
this optimism and excitement: there's still a great deal to be sorted
out in the areas of trust, security, payment, and so on. It's precisely
for this reason that the places where companies are gaining the greatest
benefits from Web services at present are within the enterprise.

This will undoubtedly change. There's still a lot of work to do, but
companies can and are using Web services today. And as for the consumer
plays well - the future, as they say, lies ahead.

In my teens I was an avid reader of Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason
books. You may be familiar with the TV series also. Last week my mom, who
is visiting us here in the U.S., made an interesting observation when she
was going through one of Gardner's books. She said: "You know, Paul Drake
[the detective] always used to go to a public telephone booth to make a
call to Perry. When you called me from your mobile phone, it occurred to
me that in today's world, Paul would be in a car or on a bus or train and
making that same call from a cell phone."

The shift to e-business is fundamentally changing how systems look - and
even more important (for us developers) - how systems are built. To
support e-business, systems often evolve "from the outside in" - in the
sense that a Web site is put up quickly, and it reaches back slowly into
the corporation's back-end systems.

If you are implementing a multiuser system, your system will probably have
certain attributes. It may be implemented in a distributed fashion and it
may have some sort of security model. In its most basic form, such a
system can be represented by a straight line on a piece of paper: below
the line is the information, content, data (call it what you will); and
above the line are the various individuals, groups, and roles that need to
work with what is below the line.

The task of making data available to business partners and customers
presents a variety of challenges. For instance, the content and quantity
of data frequently changes (usually by becoming larger and more complex).
Or new sources and potential consumers of data emerge, each with different
requirements - both in terms of the nature of the data they use and the
technology they use to process it. Or access to confidential data must be
limited to authorized personnel and users must be isolated from system
failures.

*** XML-J FEATURE: WEB SERVICES SECURITY USING PLUGGABLE PROVIDERS
*** by Mark A. Richman

The Web Services model is rapidly growing as an option for deploying
reusable, component-based functionality over the Internet. Exposing these
services is the Simple Object Access Protocol, which defines a lightweight
mechanism for invoking these services or transactions. The SOAP
specification defines a set of rules for using XML to represent such
Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs). These RPCs can ride on various transport
protocols, such as HTTP, SMTP, and POP3. However, the current SOAP
specification (version 1.1) doesn't define all the features developers
might expect to find in a traditional distributed object protocol, such as
security.

*** FIRST LOOK: XML LINK
*** by Jim Milbery

The advantage of Web services lies in the ability of the "client"
application to access services and functions without having an
understanding of how these services are implemented within the back-end
system. Almost any business service can be implemented as a Web service.
For example, a buyer might access a "CreateOrder" service to place
orders with a supplier and the supplier might return the favor by
accessing
invoice presentment services on the buyer's side of the equation. In
both cases there are likely to be sophisticated enterprise resource
planning (ERP) applications behind these businesses. Interoperability
between any two systems is always limited - especially when the two
partners are using (highly customized) systems from different vendors.
Developers have tried to address these integration issues using EAI,
application server technology, and message-oriented middleware. Rogue Wave
Software is addressing this challenge in a new and interesting way with
Rogue Wave XML Link.

Is XML required for Web services? Not necessarily. Developers have been
designing and building "Web services-like" solutions for several years -
long before the term Web services (or the Web, for that matter) existed.
RPC introduced the concept of location transparency - distributed objects
(DO) that could be located and utilized regardless of their location on
the Network. Clients used IDL for describing and contracting services with
distributed objects.

PC World
08/10/2001 14:50:18

A lista

brasileiras usam a tecnologia Java.

citaram ainda a escalabilidade e 25%, a segurança.

   Vale lembrar que o levantamento "The Gartner Survey on Java Usage in

*** GUEST EDITORIAL: J2ME CALLS AND J2SE SWINGS
*** by George Grey

Java has come a long way in its short life. Linux just celebrated its
10-year anniversary; for Java that milestone is still more than three
years away. Who really understood, seven years ago, that Java would become
the standard platform for delivering content over the Internet and for
running applications on mobile phones - even the de facto platform for
future smart-card technology? And what will the next few years bring for

One of the outstanding things about Java is that it facilitates building

internationalization API.

*** JDJ FEATURE STORY: A STORM IN A COFFEE CUP !
*** by David Hardin and Mike Frerking

The JavaBean Component Architecture provides a means to reuse software
and, when combined with tool support, can dramatically increase developer
productivity. This model has been realized primarily in graphical display
applications with AWT and Java Swing components. Recent advances in J2ME
and the release of the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ) allow
similar productivity gains to be achieved with real-time and
embedded-hardware driver components.

The performance of J2EE-based applications sometimes doesn't live up to

*** JDJ FEATURE: INTEGRATING AND MAPPING A WEB APPLICATION MVC PATTERN
*** by Steven Sweeting, Clive Jones, and Aaron Rustad

As Java technology has matured over the last few years so have we. We've
learned that building complex enterprise applications that respond to
change requires more than standardized APIs and virtual machines.
Fortunately, we're now starting to see the widespread adoption of best
practices, patterns, and even frameworks with templates and prebuilt
components. This article looks at the MVC design pattern and reviews its
implementation in Struts, a presentation-tier application framework, as
well as recognizing analogies of MVC to a well-formed, EJB-tier framework
that Struts can be integrated with.

Convergence. A word loved by PR companies and feared by nontechnical
consumers. If you believe industry pundits, we'll all be carrying
combination mobile phone-PDA-TV-toasters in the next few years. You'll be
able to make a phone call, write a memo, watch the morning news, and cook
your breakfast all at the same time while on your way to work. How close
reality comes to the dream (or nightmare, depending upon your point of
view) is anyone's guess, but the first devices that might fit a definition
of "convergence" are emerging on the market. Nokia's 9210 Communicator is
one such combination - a mobile phone and PDA.

*** GUEST EDITORIAL: THE PLATFORM OF CHOICE
*** by Scott McNealy

It's becoming more obvious to me every day that Java technology is the
platform of choice -- in more ways than one.

*** LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

JDJ is a wonderful publication and the new format makes it even better.
I'd like to see a section in each issue devoted to new and less
experienced Java programmers. "Interfaces vs Abstract Classes" by Anthony
Meyer was a wonderful example of this type of article [Vol. 6, issue 4]. I
handed it out to students in my last Java class because it really
explained many things.

*** EDITORIAL: PLUG AND PLAY AND PLUG AND PLAY
*** by Ajit Sagar

I recently got the security card for entering our Pennsylvania offices.
The badge attaches to a hook that's linked to the string that goes around
my neck so I can carry the badge at all times. I'm sure you know the type
of setup I'm talking about. The JavaOne badges handed out this year were
of the same type. As I examined this "gadget" more closely, I noticed that
the hook is attached to a clasp, and the clasp snaps into a socket at the
other end. Another piece allows me to tighten or loosen the string around
my neck.

*** JDJ NEWS:

*** JAVA DEVELOPER'S JOURNAL CIRCULATION SOARS TO A NEW RECORD HIGH!
*** "THIS SAVES OUR ADVERTISING PARTNERS A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF MONEY
*** BY REMOVING THE NEED TO ADVERTISE IN MULTIPLE MAGAZINES..."

(Montvale, NJ, October 2, 2001) - SYS-CON Media announced today that the
company projects a circulation of 104,254 copies for Java Developer's
Journal June 2001 print edition, which generated single-issue revenues of
over 1 million dollars. JDJ expects to announce a six-month target
circulation of 97,325 (up from its previous six month average of 89,652)
during the period ending June 2001. In addition, JDJ has delivered a
236,715 copy monthly circulation of its digital edition with its September
2001 issue.

"As of June 2001, Java Developer's Journal's circulation reached another
record number of readers," said Carmen Gonzalez, senior vice president of
sales and marketing. "Exceeding our rate base of 60,000 by more than 50%
means that our advertising partners are getting an unmatched value for
their advertising dollars invested in JDJ. We strongly believe that we
cover the entire Java print advertising market, including our competitors'
reach, at a fraction of the cost. This saves our partners a considerable
amount of money by removing the need to advertise in multiple magazines."

"Unlike our competitors, JDJ has always underpromised and overdelivered to
its advertising partners," said Engin Sezici, circulation manager for Java
Developer's Journal. "In the recent past -June 2000- one JDJ competitor
promised a 30,000 copy rate base and delivered a little over 23,000, while
another competitor promised again a rate base of 30,000 and delivered only
a little over 24,000. We have never underdelivered our rate base and look
forward to exceeding it by more than 50%."
