Yes, there was a Java project. Both Lucas and I were working on it for a time a couple of years ago. I think I still have a copy of the unfinished source code...
I would say rather than a Java port, work on the code to make it easily cross-platform compilable (i.e. maybe go OO with C++ so the GUI would be the only thing...

Ok, I've been trying to write a new Robowar for years, but everytime I start a project it never gets done. I'm working on one currently that I wanted to bounce...
I think it sounds like a good idea, but it is very ambitious project. I know Grobots is still fairly new but there still are no sound with a real overall AI....
