Right now the Hawk is scheduled to take a ride out to the field so we
do have a good possibility that the launch will happen. The possible
time for the launch has changed though, now looking like the 3 PM area
according to the latest winds and sky condition forecasts. You know
Texas, it may snow tomorrow or we may be putting on sunscreen and
getting a tan, or both. Winds are still a bit of a concern as the
winds aloft seem confused due to the arrival of the front tomorrow
afternoon. Seems that they swing around to the wnw about 3 with a low
velocity but with the under riding of the cooler air of the front the
upper winds might be a bit later in their switching. Mile high
predictions are all over the charts right now for most of tomorrow,
all agree that there will be a wind shift in the afternoon, some
earlier (3) and some later (4:30). We have the waiver till 5 (can't
go any later due to sunset and darkness) so anytime between 3 and 5
are likely. Plan on the pad crew setting up the pad area about 2 so
that we can load anytime we get a confirmed good condition. The Hawk
can go out and wait since turning the altimeters on is simple and
quick, say about 2:30, and then we can get it airborne within about 15
minutes of a decision. We still won't have flight fever but we are
looking at conditions that could very well give us a flight without
compromising our standards of launch protocol.
We do still have TMT as well as the standard research launch.
Remember that spectators are restricted from being around the rockets
in prep or going out on the range. No non-TRA members are allowed to
the east of the road within 500 feet of the pads but recovery is
allowed beyond that area by anyone since a motor that has spent its
propellant is not a research motor anymore. There will be a sign
about halfway down the grass strip delineating the prep area, please
all TRA flyers stay to the north of that sign and non-TRA spectators
please stay to the south. The safety code says that we can have some
spectators but it is the field launch director and RSO that determines
the areas of accessibility, please respect our judgment on this mater.
Under the current rules under 18 are allowed but with proper adult
supervision and following the restrictions of the launch as indicated
above. The term invited guest is included in the regulations and if a
TRA flyer has an invited guest they are under the flyer's supervision
and as such allowed to accompany the flyer with the exception of going
out to the pads. I would prefer not to see anyone other than family
members of flyers under 18 in the prep areas.
