From the AARG Prefect:

I am going out to the field in the old suburban, not the trailer,
and will arrive by 7 so we can get something set up for early risers
(likely the only ones to fly anything). I figure that if we have
flyable conditions with both skies and winds cooperating they will go
away by noon at the latest. If you desire to fly something come early
and hope for the best. Best guess so far is that winds will be flyable
at 10-20 until 11 when they will start gusting over 20, skies are
starting overcast but may burn off by 10 so we could have just a bit of
marginal conditions mid morning. Lower altitude flight to 1200-1500
should be good for first thing and we will play it by conditions from
there.

One provision, this is Texas and the weather likes to change, we
could be blown away earlier than expected or have conditions go later
than now thought of. Everyone please make your own mind up and we will
try to have something of a launch this week.

Rick

FLYBY ALERT: In a twilight launch of stunning beauty, space shuttle Discovery
left Earth last night on a two week construction mission to the International
Space Station (ISS).  Discovery is now approaching the ISS for docking on March
17th.  The timing of this mission favors sky watchers in North America and
Europe who will be able to see the two spacecraft flying over many towns and
cities in the evenings ahead.  Tonight, March 16th, is extra-special because the
not-yet-docked duo will appear as distinct points of bright light flying one
after the other through the twilight sky--a rare "double flyby." Check
the Simple Satellite Tracker for flyby times: http://spaceweather.com/flybys .

There's a lot of crossover interest between rocketry and astronomy, so I'm posting this.

If you're up and out at sunrise, look for the occultation.

If you're up and out even earlier (or if you've reached the age where you wake up during the night and have to wander around for a while before you can go back to sleep), look for the meteors, too.

I have a question about this from Trip Barber's notice about the recent Continental flight issue: "Both pilots saw it clearly and described it as roughly 6 feet long , white, with triangular/delta fins, not smoking, and passing through a horizontal orientation at that moment (presumably coming to apogee).  The pilots were, naturally, extremely alarmed and thought they were going to strike it."

I have heard that commercial airplanes travel at several hundred miles per hour.  I have no experience with an encounter at these relative speeds (several hundreds of miles per hour), but I wonder if a surprise encounter at that closing speed on such a small object would allow an opportunity for such a detailed observation.  Is anyone able to offer information on this?

Anyone in Texas needing to send correspondence on your ATF permit, here's the mailing address:

Federal Explosives Licensing Center

244 Needy Road

Martinsburg, West Virginia 25405

Attention: Daniel Urrutia

Be sure to write your daytime phone number on your correspondence and put a reminder that you're a hobby rocketry person.

I sent in a change of address and included the original expired permit instead of the original current permit. He called me up and told me what he needed. He said that it helps a lot of it has someone's name on it (his in this case) because they get a mountain of paperwork directed generally to the agency, and the mail room people have to figure out where it goes. If it has a name, it goes straight to the right person.

He also said that because I'm a hobby rocketry person, he's going to send through the change of address immediately based on my promise to send in the right piece of paper. He said they have to be careful with the real industry guys who have a lot of explosives, but for the rocketry guys they aren't so worried.

I told him I would mail him every purple piece of paper I have in my notebook. He said I'm not the first one to get it wrong, and I won't be the last.

All in all, a pleasant conversation. I dealt with the same guy when I was trying to get my mailing address changed to a post office box, and he was easy to deal with then, too.

I should have added that there's a toll free number: 1-877-283-3352.

The first go-round I forgot the Notice of Clearance and Responsible Person Letter of Clearance.  I called Mr. Urrutia back to discuss what to do about them in my change of address process, and he was helpful in guiding me through it.  The short version was, "Thanks for bringing them up.  Keep them, and I'll handle it all at my end."  I think that purple piece of paper is the main thing they're concerned about.

WAIVER:

16,000 ft AGL

OVER 12,000 ft requires prior notification and approval by RSO
at the field upon arrival AT THE FIELD!!!! Don't wait until your
heading to pad.

All L3 flights require the prior clearance of the specified
individuals; Rick VanVoorhis, Stu Barret, or Alex Mericas. Just
to make sure that the rocket/motor is a good flight for the field.

_____________________________________________________________________

LAUNCH FEES: announced later - I need to check the changes to the
Hutto Location and this notice is being expedited.

FAMILY RATE: Children fly free with paying Parent/Guardian.

EDUCATIONAL GROUP RATE: If you have an educational group activity
for particpation at the launch, for special consideration please
contact Mark Willett prior to Saturday at:

vice.president@...

_________________________________________________________________

SPECIAL NOTE FOR CHILDREN: ************

We wish to emphasize safety on the range and we are particularly
concerned about the safety of the children that we welcome and enjoy
at our launches. Children enjoy model rocketry and often are very
excitable, particularly when endeavoring to chase their rocket after
it has landed.

Parents and Guardians should pay special attention to their youngster
and be midful that often the range is still active after the launch
of any particular project from the pads. Please remind your young'un
to wait at the flight line until the LCO, Parent/Guardian (or other
mindful adult) indicates that it is safe to leave the flight line
(for any reason).

While the pads are active and flights are occuring, participants and
spectators need to pay attention to any flights that are occuring,
and rockets that are coming back to earth. Particpants should be at
the flight line and observing the pads as launches are being
performed.

Children are very interested in the little buttons at the Launch
Control table. If your child is inclined to permeate informal/social
barriers, please be mindful that the operations area of the Field is
responsible for range safety and is NOT a play area.

_________________________________________________________

--------------------------------------------
HEALTH SAFETY:

It will be Summer Conditions at the field, so be prepared with plenty
of water. At the range, you should consider yourself in the
wilderness.

Bring your own shade. The shade at the operations tables is limited
and is for members performing range duty.

I suggest lip balm, a hat and perhaps sunscreen for sensitive skins.
If you anticipate going into the forest after your project, long
pants and covered footwear is suggested (Shorts and Sandals is NOT a
good idea).

DRINK WATER! DRINK WATER!

Children:

I would suggest that special attention be paid to the attire of your
children, as they are particularly vulnerable to unprotected feet and
legs, and the heat (less surface area per body mass is less efficient
in cooling the body). "Crocs" are NOT recommended. Children treat
rocketry as a track and field event!

It doesn't seem far sometimes, but hiking for 30 - 45
minutes (working hard) in 100 degree temperatures without shade
can take it out of you, quick. I suggest a canteen, camel-back, or
other water bottle/container that is comfortable to hike with during
recovery operations in order to prevent getting stupid from the heat
and falling over.

One of my passions in life is high power rocketry. On September 6, 2009 I will
be using my passion for rocketry to dedicate a flight in memory of my mother
–Barbara McFadden- who passed away last November after battling Parkinson's for
almost 20 years. I am seeking donations to sponsor this flight. 100% of all
donations will be sent to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's
Research. http://www.michaeljfox.org/

The rocket: "Barbara Jean"
This is a kit offered by Wildman Rocketry called the Wildman Dual Deploy. It is
a 3" diameter, 90.75 inches in length and will weigh over 12 lbs on the pad.
This will be launched on an Animal Motor Works L1300 Blue Baboon motor. The
motor was generously donated by Paul from AMW for this flight. The expected
altitude will be about 10,400', almost 2 miles. Other necessary components for
this flight include a MAWD altimeter from Perfectflite, a Parrot altimeter from
Featherweight Altimeters, and a Sky Angle parachute also from Wildman Rocketry.

http://www.perfectflite.com/ http://www.featherweightaltimeters.com/

The event: Airfest 2009
Airfest is a 4 day rocket launch sponsored by the KloudBusters Rocketry Club of
Argonia Kansas. These are a great group of people that put on a premier event
over the Labor Day weekend. I am anticipating launching this rocket on Sunday,
September 6.
http://www.kloudbusters.org/ http://www.kloudbusters.org/airfest/airfest.html

How to donate: Cash, check, or credit card.
1. I have a form available in which your donation can be sent into the
Foundation.
2. Go to http://www.teamfox.org and click on donate. Click on support a member
and enter my name (Mike McFadden) or the event (Airfest).
3. I'll accept cash or checks and forward 100% to the Foundation at the
conclusion of the flight.

The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research is providing support,
information, and research about this terrible affliction. From Wikipedia:
Parkinson's Disease is a chronic and progressive degenerative disease of the
brain that impairs motor control, speech, and other functions. The disease is
named after English physician James Parkinson, who gave a detailed description
of it in an 1817 work titled, "An Essay on the Shaking Palsy".Parkinson's
disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. It is
characterized by muscle rigidity, resting tremor, slowing of movement and, in
extreme cases, nearly complete loss of movement. Secondary symptoms may include
high level cognitive dysfunction, subtle language problems, and depression.

at the field upon arrival AT THE FIELD!!!! Don't wait until your
heading to pad.

All L3 flights require the prior clearance of the specified
individuals; Rick VanVoorhis, Stu Barret, or Alex Mericas. Just
to
make sure that the rocket/motor is a good flight for the field.

RANGE FEES FOR THE DAY: $10.00

EDUCATIONAL GROUP RATE: If you have an educational group activity
for particpation at the launch, for special consideration please

vice.president@...

Just a reminder that I will have motors for sale at the launch. Most of what I
have available are Aerotech reloads and hardware in various sizes. I also have

Several years ago, we had a sparky drag race at Hutto at sunset.  My recollection is that what turned out to be the best video was shot sideways because the person was caught off guard.  If you are that person, do you still have the video?  I have a way to rotate videos any multiple of 90 degrees, so we can save it.

Based on the weather forcast for the area, it does show a rain out, however, depends on the amount that we actually get.  Tomorrow afternoon (unless it is a total wash) I will go to the field and put a foot in the mud, I mean dirt and let everyone know if it is a GO OR NO GO.

We will definitely try again for Sat & Sun, Nov. 28-29.
