The mixer in Studio Pack is computer independent if you don't want to
record. Setups like tascam, echo, motu, etc needs the computer turned
on everytime.

Thanks for the help!   I didn't really understand the part about the OS working either , that is just what the Logic tests indicated.  my interpetation was working on other Applications using  Windows OS.   Overall, after researching this for a long time, I think the Roland deal is tremendous compared to anything else.  I was thinking about going w/ a digital mixer into a maudio delta 66 card (comes w/ logic audio software), but the cost would be alot more.   Also, the AArdvark Q10 is a nice piece, comes w/ compression and reverb (cakewalk 9 included,  but the mixer is all software driven.    I think I would like hardware where I can simply move the faders, change EQ settings, store the settings etc...vs. software driven mixer settings and using the mouse for every change.

Since you have used this a while how is it working for you w/ the digital mixer, recording, and the Logic Audio package?

I'm upgrading from my Old Sony 4 track Mini Disc, so I'm sure things will be far superior as far as sound quality and editing goes.  My computer is an AMD ASUS motherboard, 1.2 GHz w/ 7200 rpm 40 GB HD, 512 ram, and plextor CD writer (I had this built for music !!).

I also found out these are getting scarfed up pretty quickly when I sent an email the BPM music express People.
He said there was a waiting list of 5 people for the next shipment and he had no idea how long it would be.  (It seems like a Great value for $599).

Thanks again for the help.....

Any other negatives or positives on this setup is greatly appreciated !

The number of platinum verbs is determined by CPU power and the size
of the buffers too (PIII 600 in the tests). Bigger buffers increase
the number of effects but raises latency (serious problem for VST
instruments).

The platinum verb is the most cpu intensive plugin of logic. I think
that you can expect to use more silver verbs than the number of
platinum verbs of the test. If you have a better cpu than the tests,
even more.

What is OS working? Format floppys and record at the same time?

> How many tracks and effects can be run at the same time?

The mixer have two effect processors and eq that don't request your
computer resources.

Logic effects, such as silver verbs, eq (in logic), delays, chorus,
etc require computer power (cpu).

Resuming...

One setup of this price range is not as powerfull as one
professional "all hardware" studio where you can use everything at
the same time.

I think that it is more adequate to a really good MIDI/audio
HOMESTUDIO.

How about alternatives???

Just wanted to say Hi and thank you all for all of this good
information. I'm most likely going to buy this product pretty
soon - but I must admit I have some reservations after reading about
the conflicts, problems, etc...

I found on the Logic site something that is pretty useful regarding
the audio card RPC 1 Roland. Here is the link:
http://atlas.emagic.de:591/FMPro

I compared this to the Delta Audiophile (lower end delta card) and the
specs were VERY close (may even be the same card). I noticed some
things that might be of interest: Check the performance test:
Playback while working, Playback while OS is working, and recording
while working is NO. Also the maximum number of verbs in playback
mode is 12 tracks, gates is 6 tracks. Note: these were tests using
the platinum version and not silver replica that is included w/ the
package. The higher end Deltas could handle much more w/ verbs, and
OS working, etc...

I really like the interface/ digital mixer. However, I'm concerned
about the quality of the card and functionality of the software
Logic that comes w/ it. How is it working for you all that use
it? How many tracks and effects can be run at the same time?
Can you playback 10 audio tracks w/ effects while recording 4 new
ones? How is the latency given this scenario? According to the logic
testing, this can't be done???

Can you monitor w/ zero latency while playing back 2 recorded tracks
and mixing 2 new tracks , for example?

I really appreciate any information you guys can give. This looks
like the best solution I've seen for $700 and less . Also, can
you mix external effects using the Digital mixer? Does the digital
mixer have Headphone output? Sorry for so many ?s, but it's hard
to find good info on the web. Also, the Logic site had some tutorials
and helpful information for anyone needing more info on the software
side.

Thanks alot !

Jeff-

I had the same exact problem. The fix for me:

I had to disable any/all audio drivers with the exception of the rpc-
1 card. That was the fix for me.

Hopefully that'll help.

Okay guys. I took the plunge and got the studio pack. I am having all
kinds of problems, ones that I can't figure out. I am pretty good
with computers, but this baffles me.

I am running a PIII 800Mhz running WinME with 256MB RAM, 8G and 40G
IDE hard drives, the Roland RPC-1, a 10/100 ethernet card, NVidia
TNT2 AGP graphics card, and a TI 1394 IEEE FireWire card. All worked
fine hardware-wise before putting the Roland RPC-1 in, and that seems
to be (knock on wood) fine with the drivers installed.

I watched the 'Quick Start' video and followed the instructions for
getting the drivers installed, and installing Logic RPC. (Funny
thing, they don't tell you that Logic RPC will not run on Win2000!) I
started with a fresh install of WinME for this.

So - when I fire up Logic RPC, I get a dialog that says:

ASIO:
No Driver Selected
(-10201)

So, I click the 'Continue' button on this dialog. The program seems
to come up, but then hangs doing it's 'CD check', and that's as far
as I get!!!

I also tried to get it running with Cakewalk's Sonar, and no luck.
Cakewalk recognizes the Roland RPC drivers as being present, but
nothing happens. When I try to power the VM3100 on with either
setting activated at the mixer (Logic or Cakewalk) I get the RMDB-2
checking message at the mixer, then it changes to RMDB-2 Locked!

What does that mean?? I can't find anything tellin me in the docs. I
hope someone has encountered this and knows how to handle it. I
emailed Emagic to get some help, but have not heard back yet.

Help - please!!! MANY thanks in advance.

Padu-

"Speaker click" is not a listed option on my version 4.7(although it
does mention this in the instruction manual/acrobat).

It has all the other click options but that one. Frustrating!

Are you using the same version?

Thanks.

The MIDI metronome can be either one MIDI event or a click on the
computer speaker. Since you don't have any modules you can do one of
the following:

1) On the menu 'options->recording options' set the option 'speaker
click'

2) Use one VST instrument such as EXS24 (sampler) or any free VST
instrument from internet and use MIDI event to activate it. This
option uses more system resources though.

Hello everyone,

I will be the resident question asker over the next month or so.

Problem One:

Since installing the RPC-1 card, all audio, from all audio programs,
cannot be panned. When I pan, or play just the left or right channel
by itself, it just reduces the overall volume. The input level of
the Roland mixer reflects this as well (continues to show signal
level on both L and R). So, it's not a speaker related problem, a
mixing board problem, or a specific audio program that is messing up,
so it must be the RPC-1 card or an overall Windows setting. Does
anyone have any suggetions or perhaps run into this problem and
corrected it?.

Midiman tech suppport suggested changing IRQs. This didn't help.
Here's my setup:

PC with Win 98
Athlon 1 Ghz - Via chipset (if I recall correctly)
256 RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA - Vanta
Also have a Soundblaster Live! It's currently disabled.
Mostly running audio applications: Soundforge, Acid, and Logic

Problem Two:

I can't seem to get the click track to work on Logic Audio RPC.
Neither a pre-click before recording, nor one that runs along with
the song. I'm not using any midi (I don't know if that makes any
difference).

Thanks!

Thanks for checking your version. When I called emagic support, the
guy I spoke with advised that this version was sent without the help
file. That just doesn't make sense! Oh well. Here's what I did (to
avoid putting my head through the wall):

I printed out the entire acrobat users manual (about 550 pages after
a bit of editing), went to Kinko's and had them three-hole punch it
(1 cent a page), and put it into two binders. I know that sounds a
bit over-the-top, but it is so nice to have a hard copy of the
manual. I suggest it to anyone else who's a beginner (like me).

---------------------------------------------------------

Hey Pasquale-

I'm brand new to computer based recording as well. I have a bit of
computer experience (not alot) and have also used some Roland and
Yamaha all-in-one recorders.

Here's my analogy for working/setting up a computer based system:

It's like someone gave you all the parts you need to build a car, but
1/3 of the parts are Chevy, 1/3 are Honda, and 1/3 are AMC.

As a result, if you have a problem with one of the manufacturer's
parts, it'll effect your whole system. And then, one company will
point the finger at the other for your problem.

There's no doubt that the Roland recorders are cool, and fairly
straight forward. IT's definitely attractive to get a nice version
of one of those. HOWEVER, once you dial in a good computer setup,
the possiblities (creatively) far surpass an all-in-one recorder.

I'm just a week into this Roland/emagic setup. I'm still having
difficulties with certain things (see my next posting) but all in all
it was pretty easy to get running. Emagic seems to be cool, and I've
read alot about their programs. I think that it's extremely
flexible, but for that reason, it can also be somewhat complex (maybe
I'm just slow).

To be to the point, if you install all the new hardware/software, and
have absolutely no problems in the setup (unlikely: based on my
experience and postings on websites by others), emagic will be a bit
tougher to get into than your vs840. You'll also have to learn the
setup of the VM-3100 mixer. But that isn't too difficult if you've
spent time with the VS series. I certainly do not want to discourage
you from getting this setup. It's my belief that the benefits of
this setup will outlast the first month of a sharp learning curve and
some trouble shooting (I've certainly learned a ton about computers
since buying/putting together a computer (with a friend) for this,
and working with the installation of the Roland setup.

It's also cool to have a connection with others that have had similar
experiences troubleshoting with this setup who can help you out.

Hope that helps a bit. If you have more specific questions, feel
free to post them.

Adios!

Hello!

I'm sure it's just a matter of time until there are more threads on
this thing than anyone would care to look at (which is a good thing).

I just got the Studio Pack, and luckily, was able to get it up and
running within a few hours.

THe thing that I noticed right away, as I have never used any
multitrack software before, is that the "search help" file is missing!

There's a folder for it, but once you open it - presto - empty!

Is this the same for other users? Does anyone know where to get this

useres manual everytime I have a question.

Thanks!

I don't have studio pack but I will buy one as soon as possible.

The main limitation of the pack, in my opinion, is the sampling rate
of the mixer, that is limited to 44.1 KHz. If your final work is a CD
I don't think it will affect the result. Actually, I think that
record at 48 and change to 44.1 at the final doesn't make sense since
it requires interpolation algorithms and some quality problems should
appear. But if you already have work (ADAT maybe) at 48 it is another
story...

I saw a page at Emagic about the RPC compatibility tests. RPC-1 has
11 ms latency. Nice for VST virtual instruments.

I have one XV-88, one SK-88Pro, one GI-10 (midi guitar) and one VS-
880EX (that will be substituted). I think that in the near future we
will see more and more nice virtual instruments. There is one DX7
emulator with nice results from http://www.loftsoft.co.uk capable of
reading DX7 programs available in the net. Studio Pack seems to me to
be the right choice if you intend to use virtual instruments.

Better than this...? some moving faders maybe, but $$$$$

I asked the support group at Emagic in Grass Valley, California for
suggestions regarding PC configuration settings which would improve
the performance of Logic RPC. Below is their response. Disclaimer: I
have not tried any of these yet, but if anyone can confirm that any of
these suggestions are useful, or add to the list, please let us know.

"Here are some suggestions for setting up Logic in Windows.
1) Reduce the color depth on the system to 256 if you are using a PCI
video card. If your video card is AGP, then set the Color Depth no
higher than 16 bit.
2) In the System Properties>Performance>Graphics window, reduce the
"Hardware Acceleration" setting.
3) In the System Properties>Performance>File System window, set the
typical role of the computer to either "Desktop System" or "Network
Server" Also, set the 'Read Ahead Optimization" to "None".
4) Switch off "Auto Insert Notification" for your CD drive.
5) In the "System.ini" file, limit the swap file size by inserting the
following lines under [vcache]

  MinFileCache=8192
  MaxFileCache=8192

Howdy Eric et al,

I believe I've exchanged messages with most of you in the group at
some point, and let me thank you all for your advice and thoughts to
date.

Here's my baseline system:
HP Pavilion 8495 - PIII, 550MHz, 25GB Ultra 100 Drive, 256MB RAM
Running Windows98 SE
Using Logic RPC with my Studio Pack
I'm a guitar player, into jazzy stuff and old-time rock

So far, I'm delighted with my S-Pack. Unbelievable bang for the buck
and I'm very happy with the sound quality. I haven't tried to push
Logic RPC to the limits yet, but I've noticed that the 'bounce'
function seems to be pretty power hunger. I started running into
problems with 24 bit, 5 tracks, 3 effects when bouncing to 16 bit
inleaved stereo. I have not done any optimizations on my system
configuration, but I have an email from Emagic support recommending a
variety of settings for improving performance. I'll post that later.

Here's a question: My locator (meas/beat) in the LCD window does not
advance when I'm recording/playing back a song in Logic. I know these
work because I was able to drive them with another MIDI device (A
Boss
JS-5 Jamstation and set the locator buttons. But they don't move when
Logic is driving. Any ideas as to the problem?

Thanks, Odour

Hi Jared,

Well, from what I've heard, the first Tascam drivers were pretty weak. Not
only did they not allow the device to to work in a stable manner, but they
also had little functionality. This I beleive has changes, as the tascam
currently supports control over all EQ parameters, audio scrubbing, control
over effects and VST instruments, opening/closing window sets etc.
Basically alot more can be achieved without the use of a mouse. I beleive
the aim of Steinberg's Houston is just this, to illiminate the need for a
mouse. Now, if the Roland could achieve a few of these things that'd be
great considering that it also does many other things besides being a
controller that'd surely put it over the top.

Hi Rene
What do you mean by "do more than control virtual faders and
transport cotrols."? The VM can be set-up to send transport control
changes to Cubase, I'm sure it must. These are simple MIDI commands
and just require connection through your MIDI interface. What does
the tascam do besides transport?

Hi Jared,

Yeah, i realize that all things considered, the Roland package is far
superior to the Tascam, especially in terms of all of the things you
mentioned. However, using it as a hardware controller for Cubase seems to
be my other major demand. I would consider the Tascam over the VM for this
ability alone, unless I'm told otherwise that the Roland can do more than
control virtual faders and transport controls. It's very difficult to find
such information. Thanks

Rene

Hey
Thanks for the invite Eric. I'm touched.
I love my VM. It gives me that warm feeling in my tummy that always
happens when I get my money's worth. I wish I could feel that more
often.
For the record, I've had the RSP for a few months now. I use it with
Logic Platinum, SoundDiver, XV-5080 w/4 exp boards, Yammy S-80
w/PLG150-AN board, AMT interface and I've got itchy fingers for
Emagics soft-synth and sampler. I went with a Gateway PIII 1Gig, 256
MB, 2 20Gig HDs and I'm happy with it except for the (1,2,3-count
em!) fans, noisy bastards.
I've worked around a few little problems with configuring so far, so
if I can help anybody out I'd be happy to do so.
Cubase Guy. The VM package is really a lot better than the tascam USB
thingy. 2 digital effects, more I/O, PCI card interface rather than
questionable USB, mix automation, etc. I looked at the Event EZ Bus
too and chose the RSP over all.
Incidently, I don't use the Logic RPC that ships with the Pack (which
is Logic Silver). It interferes with the superior Platinum I've
already got.
I'm not online every day but I'll be around.
Toodles, Jared

i have a friend with the tascam and he really likes it. although he
did mention it took him 8 months to reach full functionality.

unfortunately i am still waiting on my RPC card. i got the vm3100
before the studio pack was released...so as soon as that arrives,
i'll start working on it as a controller.

on the subject of the tascam vs. the studio pack: the vm3100 alone is
amazing, it has so much more than the tascam it is ridiculous,
especially for the difference in $$.

Plus, now you have a group of fellow users to share issues with:)

your hardware specs are pretty solid. i would recommend another 256
MB RAM, especially because they are so cheap now ($50). Other than
that, what I have discovered about audio/sequencing programs is to
simply go for the GUI that you like. they all essentially provide the
same function. of course, some have more candy than others, but stick
with one that you work with best. personally, i like sonar because i
think it has the most logical interface. although i must say the lack
of a basic metronome is frustrating..among other things.

Hi guys,

I've noticed that in the poll, some of you guys are using Cubase as
your software package of choice. I use VST as well, and I'm heavily
considering the purchase of the studio pack. However, aside from the
neat R-Bus capability, I'm also interested in the vm3100pro's ability
to act as a control surface for cubase. What features are
accessible? I've heard about transport controls and faders. what
about adjusting VST EQs and effects etc. My other alternative is the
Tascam us-428. Can you guys help me out? thanks. This group is a
terrific idea by the way! Thanks in advance.

Hey! Thanks for the invite, and for the great group!

I am considering the Studio Pack. I found a place online for $599
shipped, like someone mentioned in the HC thread. Is that a good
price? Seems to be to me, judging by what I can get locally.

I have a PIII 800MHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB 7200 RPM IDE HD, running
Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 installed. I run Cakewalk's Sonar,
but I understand the pack comes with a version of Logic. Is the Logic
version shipped with it useful? I have never really given Logic a
fair shake. A guy at the store I was looking at it in told me that
Logic can handle any plugin - VST, DirectX, ProTools, the whole
works... now THAT sounds cool.

Anyway... how does my computer compare hardware-wise to others here
that are running the Roland equipment? Is it pretty dependable? Works
well with Sonar?

I would love to hear any comments. Thanks in advance!

Cheers!
Jeff

sweet! thanks for joining. I totally agree!
suport....what support. It seems that these days, we
have to rely on other owners for support. Sometimes it
feels like the next step is to write our own
drivers...UGH!

Please make yourself at home. We have a lot to talk about.

What OS is everyone running?
What sequencer?
What is your setup?
What type/style of music?

This is just to get the ball rolling.

Feel free to bring up any relevant issue and hopefully it will spark
some conversation.

Again, Thanks for joining!
