Randy, I do think that this is an area where I have some experience.
You said yourself that the Atom wiki "is the exception". The least you
could do is listen to what I have to say.
As I said, if you tell everybody that they need to create an id first,
then all the spammers will create an id. And the spam rate goes up.
Even so, with registration being optional, about half of the spam is
from registered ids. Here's a recent spam, note again one anonymous,
and one registered:
