Just use HTML for everything is likely a problem considering that most
RSS client/publishers work otherwise. So, I would go with option #1,
add dir where approriate (see Sam's list). Occording to the RSS spec,
RSS extensions are elements, not attributes. So modifying the RSS
profile to suggest an extension attribute would contradict the spec. I
would suggest that this is a candidate for modifying the spec. Can
someone who understands this better than I suggest appropriate
modifications to the RSS spec?
