As part of the RSS Advisory Board becoming custodian of the Media RSS
specification, I've prepared a copy of the spec here:

http://www.rssboard.org/media-rss

This is a draft copy of the current version of the spec that still requires some
proofreading. Your help would be appreciated.

The namespace declaration will remain http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/ even though
the board is now publishing the spec.

While I was preparing the document, I fixed some typos, HTML markup errors and
two examples that did not follow the spec. I also added the geoRSS namespace
declaration to the last example.

The specification now has a Table of Contents and internal links to each
element, making it easier to refer to them here on RSS-Media and elsewhere:

http://www.rssboard.org/media-rss#table-of-contents

One thing I could not fix involves this line in the Change Notes:

"Modified ????? to have a URL attribute for better module consistency."

I can't find an older version of the spec that indicates which element was
modified to add a URL attribute.

On behalf of the board, I'd like to thank Sapna Chandiramani and the other
members of Yahoo who have worked on the spec for the past five years.

The board is also taking over management of RSS-Media, the mailing list for the
public to ask questions, offer feedback and discuss implementations of the
namespace.

media:thumbnail - the attribute used to be "href". You can still find
examples of the old usage out there.

And it was changed to a "url" attribute not a "URL" attribute.

Kind of tragic when you realise that version 1.5.0 just threw all that
consistency out the window.

I want to make use of these (new?) meta data elements but i publish Atom
feeds instead of RSS. Are these specifications compatible with Atom feeds
such that i can just put this name-space into Atom and use these properties
there? Will any aggregator ever see them in my Atom feed?

  From the rsscloud.org website:
"Just define a namespace to have a single element in it, the <cloud> element
  from RSS 2.0.
If you need a URL for the namespace, please consider using the URL for this
  site. "

That implies a one-off namespace for just the cloud element, which I'm not
sure is a great idea, but it appears to be Dave's current recommendation. We
shall see whether that gains traction or not. AFAICT Wordpress doesn't yet
support RSS cloud in their Atom feeds.

A better way to handle the use of RSS elements in other XML dialects would be
the proposal we've been batting around. Revise the RSS spec to declare that when
RSS elements are used in other formats, the namespace URI should be
"http://www.rssboard.org/rss-namespace", but that RSS itself does not have a
namespace.

Dave's RSSCloud proposal is another use case for the need to have a namespace
for RSS used elsewhere.

That's the current URL for their feed - it's just not valid.

It looks to me like it's just a case of an invalid timezone in the various
date elements - should be "GMT" not "GMT+00:00".

The rest of the problems reported are just warnings. Nothing too serious,
although the "Misplaced Item" warnings are interesting. That's the result of
the channel description element being included at the end of the feed, after
all the items. I'm curious what effect that'll have on feed readers.

There's a blog post up on Dave Winer's Scripting News today that suggests Google
is playing dirty with RSS in a new real-time indexing feature that may use
PubSubHubbub (PuSH).

This post appears to be based on the mistaken notion that PuSH doesn't work with
RSS.

More info on my blog:

Your help getting the word out would be appreciated. There's some misinformation
out there that makes some people believe PuSH is for Atom publishers and
RSSCloud is for RSS. That's not the case at all.

That warning just means that the Feed Validator doesn't recognize the namespace
(which looks like something for Adobe Media Player). It's OK to disregard that.
The Adobe namespace features will be ignored in any software that doesn't
support them. All other aspects of the feed are formatted properly.

Could you post the URL of the feed? I'd like to learn more about that namespace.

Hello!
I am developing media RSS feed generator script to allow web indexers to get
metadata and player locations of the videos on the web site. However, there are
about a thousand of videos - with descriptions and other metadata such "united"
feed of the whole site may have length of few megabytes. Usual RSS feeds are not
so large, however I cannot find exact restriction of length in bytes / number of
entries in XML Media RSS feed. Currently, the off-line script generates the
Google video sitemap (also an XML) once per week. The file is large, and it's
being "happily" indexed by Google. However Russian web indexer Yandex and also
Yahoo suggest to use Media RSS format, instead. Should I generate lots of small
Media RSS feeds "on the fly", separately for the every page of the site where
video is presented, or a simplier approach of rewriting video sitemap generator
to Media RSS generator (huge rss feed) will work?
Thanks,
Dmitriy

This isn't the correct mailing list to ask these kind of questions, but (in
an effort to be helpful) are you saying you tried using the exact URL below
as an RSS feed?

http://www.facebook.com/people/Rescue-Volunteer/100000717094455

If that's the case, then I should say that, you can't just use any URL as an
RSS feed. (That Facebook page URL outputs HTML and not RSS.) The URL must
actually output RSS. For example, the URL below outputs RSS:

http://changelog.ca/feed/rss

If you look at it in FireFox, you will see that the browser "handles" it
differently (than a URL that outputs HTML).

Mozilla is removing the orange RSS icon from the Address bar in Firefox and
replacing it with a Bookmarks menu item called "Subscribe," as described in this
blog post:

http://camendesign.com/blog/rss_is_dying

Here's Mozilla developer Asa Dotzler's take on why this is good:

"The UI, as it was — a tiny orange button in the addressbar wasn't helping users
use the feature so it was removed. Better UI, a menu item with a real
description of what RSS does, 'subscribe' replaced it. That's a positive step,
not a negative one. Though it may be encountered by fewer users, it will make
much more sense to those who do encounter it."

Although I like the RSS icon and look for it all the time on sites, I'm
wondering whether it's too wonky to further broader mainstream usage of feeds.
It's a good visual identifier for RSS but may not help convey what feeds are or
why users should subscribe to them.

Do you think the icon has been a failure?

Although FB uses the term "feed" for the postings that appear in your account,
it's not an RSS feed at all. And FB doesn't want you to "take that feed
elsewhere", they want you to bring your friends to your feed on FB ... and they
hope your encouragement to them will drive non-members of FB to get sign up ...
viral growth and all that.

Here's a better way. Post you item on an RSS feed separate from FB, then post
your items from that feed to FB by 'sharing' it to your account. Each time you
post a new item on your feed, "share" it on FB and you will get ongoing
attention.

If you use Enfeedia.com to publish your RSS feed, each item will include a
facebook "share" button (as well as a LinkedIn "share" button and a StumbleUpon
"recommendation" button). Simply click that FB share button and you can easily
post the item to your FB account. You are also given an opportunity to post a
comment about the item, so, for example, besides your FB friends seeing the item
you are sharing, they will also see your comment. For example, "Here's some news
I just posted on my website, check the details at http://......"

With this strategy, you can write your item once (your own RSS feed) then share
it all over the place without having to rewrite it. :-)

If the change is significant enough to warrant alerting others as to the change
(and I don't think a typo rises to that level), then repost it as new with your

As such, I've started to draw up some modifications, it's not a formal

The new layout is at http://code.cchits.net/index.php?title=Mrss%2B

Notice that <media:content> is mostly replaced by <media:fullwork>
(allowing some degree of differentiation between the MRSS and MRSS+

accurately describe the content of that section of the programme.

I'd be grateful for any feedback.

Many thanks,

Not at all. I see variations on the classic icon on numerous individual sites
that advertise their own feed. I think Mozilla is making a small mistake to
abandon this iconic icon.

users use the feature so it was removed. Better UI, a menu item with a real

not a negative one. Though it may be encountered by fewer users, it will make
much more sense to those who do encounter it."

It's a good visual identifier for RSS but may not help convey what feeds are or
why users should subscribe to them.

I too have been concerned about the 'illiteracy' regarding the RSS icon.
The graphic is cool but it says nothing. For years I've been publishing
RSS feeds, and developed an RSS feed publishing system, and find that
many people just don't get it regarding that icon. There seems to be
mistrust as to what will happen when one clicks that icon.
So I made a decision to extend upon the standard in a way that I believe
will help people understand the icon when used for certain purposes.
Early feedback has been positive.
To be clear, I continue to include the the standard icon in code
snippets for feeds published through Enfeedia <http://www.enfeedia.com/>
. In fact, I'm rather strict about the link for the icon being the XML
file, not some webpage that discusses RSS and then offers more icons
that finally link to the XML file.
I created a series of icons that are, in a sense, a concatenation of the
standard icon plus a descriptor extension that explains what that
particular version of the icon links to. For example, the icon with the
extension "Alerts" links to a page for registering for email alerts when
items are posted on the associated feed.
To see the full set of icons that I now incorporate into Enfeedia, go to
Behind the Logo <http://www.enfeedia.com/behind-the-logo.php> .
I am keenly interested in comments to my approach: support and in fact
reinforcement of the standard, plus a set of extended icons for special
purposes related to using feeds. Others are welcome to use the extended
icons and have them link to their proprietary functions consistent with
the extension word.

Are you publishing the items, or are you consuming them?
