This is always a good news when a Department gets some money to hire a new Faculty. In this case they are "ecstatic"! Too funny!

Good luck Texas A&M with your search! You already have a solid Depatment so thsi should make it even more competitive.

Dear Specialty Group Chairs,

If any of your Specialty Groups has a special session that you wish
to highlight at the upcoming AAG Annual Meeting in Boston, please let me
or Oscar Larson know (email: olarson@...), and we will highlight
your session in the printed program for the meeting, and on the AAG
website.

It is not necessary for a Specialty Group to list a highlighted
session, and some SGs prefer not to, but we have had requests from many
SGs to advertise a particularly high-profile session, such as a
life-time achievement award session, or a special SG plenary talk, or a
session on a particularly compelling or timely topic. We will list one
session from each Specialty Group that wishes to participate in this
listing of Specialty Group highlighted sessions. Please let us know by
February 15th, 2008, if you wish to include a highlighted session for
your SG in this listing.

This highlighted session listing may also help new-comers to our
meetings to identify a place to start as they explore new areas of
interest within specialty group topics, and may assist you in recruiting
new members to the SG.

Best to all,

Doug Richardson

I often get requests from students from around the world looking for a Ph.D. programs, usually in the US, and hoping to study with me.  However, my university does not even offer a Masters in tourism, let alone a Ph.D., and I have a feeling that there may be quite a few worthwhile Ph.D. programs out there that I am personally unaware of.

To better advise these students, I would like to start a del.icio.us list (easier than doing a webpage) of tourism Ph.D. programs.

SO, if you have a Ph.D. program in tourism, all you need to do is email me the URL for that program.  Note that I am only interested in formalized program, not in "Ph.D. by research" options. Once I have a few programs listed I will post the link to the del.icio.us site on some websites so it can be found.

Alternative, if you know of an existing list like this, let me know, since I have not been able to find it.

Cheers
Alan

the potential to acquire extramural funding and guide graduate students.
The Department is especially interested in applicants who will

the delivery of distance-education courses is also desirable.

Application Process: Review of applications will begin April 15, 2008

Dear John Pigram and other friends

I have pulled together a slide show of comparison photos between 1987
and 2008 of the water crisis in South Australia. I have included
photos from the Murray Mouth, Meningie and Milang on the Lower Lakes.
We have permission from all the photographers. Please feel free to
use these in schools. The money alocated will be too late to save the
situation. The losses will be huge. Farmers are selling their stock,
and the loss of Tourism, Recreation & Leisure $ is significant.

Call for Papers

Community Development: Journal of the Community

 Development Society

http://www.comm-dev.org/

Special Topic:

"Integrating Tourism-based Development into Community Development Planning"

Tourism influences community in numerous ways, including process and outcomes. The tourism industry is one of the fastest growing in the world, in both developed and developing countries, and for all sizes of communities on the rural to urban continuum. While tourism-based development can yield large community and regional impacts, community development planning frequently ignores the tourism sector. How should a community integrate tourism-based development plans, programs and policies into community or regional level comprehensive planning? The journal focuses on theoretically and empirically based work and rarely publishes purely descriptive case studies. However, given the topic of this issue, cases can be considered if they explore lessons learned and results can be generalized.

We are soliciting abstracts for this special topic by August 31, 2008. Invitations for full manuscript submissions will be sent by September 15, with manuscripts due December 15. The issue will be published in 2009. Please send your abstract to:

Information for authors:

Community Development: Journal of the Community Development Society invites manuscripts up to 25 pages (d/s), using the American Psychological Association research style. See the website for additional information. The journal is peer-reviewed and provides coverage of vital community development research on such topics as rural and urban economic development, housing, entrepreneurship, theory, social capital, leadership and much more.

Second Call for Papers

‘Attractions and events as catalysts

for regeneration and social change’

The University of Nottingham 24th and 25th September 2008

Organisers: Christel DeHaan Tourism & Travel Research Institute, University of Nottingham and the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change, Leeds Metropolitan University

The aim of this conference is to bring together researchers who share interests in the role of tourist attractions and events in place making and shaping destinations. This research area is clearly relevant to professionals in the field including consultants, developers and local authorities.

The visitor economy is becoming increasingly competitive as destinations chase tourist spend. This is increasingly so in the context of ‘regional capitals’ which play a pivotal role in the regional economy, and ‘third cities’ whose visitor economy is often over-shadowed by the larger regional neighbours. Although tourism is seen as an integral part of regional development in these cities, they often compete for visitor expenditure in an environment of shrinking marketing investment and a volatile economic marketplace. Destinations have sought to differentiate their appeal on the basis of culture and heritage and/or events and festivals and seek to deliver 'a total visitor experience'.

We welcome papers for this conference which explore:

  • The role of regional capitals in driving the regional visitor economy
  • Delivering the total visitor experience
  • The potential for sustainable urban tourism through culture and heritage tourism
  • Creative uses of visitor attractions as focal points for regeneration programmes
  • Attractions and events and discourses of place shaping/making and the visitor economy
  • Major events and community cultural festivals as animators of place and tourist attractions
  • Planning dimensions of attractions and events development in urban and rural contexts
  • Community participation in attractions and events
  • Building sustainable partnerships and stakeholder relationships between tourism, culture and heritage in destinations
  • Managing attractions and events in sensitive sites
  • New and emerging technologies in attractions and events marketing and management
  • The role of festivals and cultural events in policies and programmes to promote community cohesion, crime reduction and anti-racism
  • Festivals, cultural events and the multi- (inter-) cultural city
  • Issues in conceiving museums and artistic venues as visitor attractions
  • Issues surrounding the 2012 London Olympics

The conference will form the academic stream of the European Union of Tourist Officers (EUTO) study visit and will provide the unique opportunity for researchers to network and share cutting edge ideas, innovation and critical thinking with the EUTO participants. The conference will include study visits as well as academic paper sessions. The study visits will focus on the role of culture in shaping destination image as Nottingham transforms into a cultural capital with ambitious projects such as Wollaton Hall, Centre for Contemporary Art Nottingham & The New Art Exchange as well as a visit to Nottingham Castle and Sherwood Forest to see how ‘Living Legends’ can be used to stimulate the visitor economy.

Paper Submission

Abstracts should be up to 250-300 words, 12 point, 1½-line spaced and be formatted for printing on A4 paper. The deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday June 13th 2008 and successful authors will be notified by the end of June, 2008. A final paper of between 4 – 8,000 words is required by the end of August 2008 if authors wish to be included in the Conference Proceedings. All abstracts and papers should be submitted electronically to ttri@...

European Union of Tourist Officers (EUTO) Study Visit

Whilst TTRI and CTCC will organise this academic part of the conference, delegates are welcome to join the EUTO tourism practitioners and we will be jointly organising social functions to allow both groups to network.

The EUTO study visit runs from 21-28 September 2008 and will be held in both Nottingham and London. It will comprise study visits, presentations and workshops. Themes to be explored include the role of attractions & events in destination development & the Olympics 2012.  There will be an opportunity to visit the O2 Arena by boat and learn about riverside regeneration en route to Europe’s largest family entertainment centre and Olympic 2012 venue.  Explore Bankside, the Pool of London and the South Bank by foot to see how iconic attractions such as London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe, Tate Modern and Vinopolis have helped create this vibrant destination.

A draft programme is currently available via www.EUTO.org

Conference Announcement and Call for Papers

‘Attractions and events as catalysts for regeneration and social change’

The University of Nottingham 24th and 25th September 2008

All abstracts and papers should be submitted electronically to: ttri@...

Delegate rates for The University of Nottingham (TTRI/CTCC conference) 24th and 25th September 2008 are:

Dear List members

Cultural Tourism is one of the most important and rapidly expanding economic and social phenomena of the contemporary world. To respond to the professional and intellectual challenges this implies for cultural practitioners, destination managers, heritage site managers, museum curators, policy makers, planners and academics, the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change at Leeds Metropolitan University has developed an important, innovative and interdisciplinary Master’s qualification in Cultural Tourism. The new MA course has been developed by the Centre’s staff after consultation with the various organisations which constitute the cultural tourism sector and will draw upon the longstanding research experience and international networks of the CTCC.

New MA Cultural Tourism starting this Autumn

The aim of this new programme is to allow its participants to take an informed position in contemporary theoretical debates and applied policy programmes, focusing on tourism and its relationships with different concepts and expressions of culture. The course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, ideas, and awareness of policy contexts at the local, national and international scale, together with the research skills and relevant practical applications relating to cultural tourism.

“This is a timely moment for a serious Master's degree in Cultural Tourism, as the forces of xenophobia and cultural exclusion threaten to drown out the voices of cultural exchange and cosmopolitan educational experiences. This    programme will produce experts and professionals who can help to analyze and manage the challenges of tourism in a globalized world without losing sight of the critical ethical challenges facing all leisure industries today.”

Arjun Appadurai, John Dewey Professor in the Social Sciences, The New School, New York

Taught by the academic staff of the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change, with inputs from our global network of researchers and professionals, the MA will address the most important themes and issues surrounding the relationships between tourism and culture including: The structures and dynamics of international tourism and cultural flows; the social practices and performances of tourists; international tourism and cultural heritage policy; the relationships between tourism and concepts of modernity, globalisation and colonialism; tangible and intangible heritages and their management; the role of museums and the ways by which cultures are represented; festivals and cultural events; culture and regeneration; tourism as a means of intercultural dialogue.

Through the ‘Researching Cultural Tourism’ module, a choice of second semester options and, the opportunity to work on a ‘live’ case study relating to the cultural sector, the course allows students to develop their own interests and skills. And, by undertaking a dissertation the MA will equip participants for future leadership roles in the diverse and dynamic field of cultural tourism and/or develop an opportunity to undertake a PhD at the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change.

"The new MA in Cultural Tourism deals with many of UNESCO's current key priorities. These include the sustainable management of tangible and intangible heritage and the vital area of inter-cultural dialogue. As a global organisation, UNESCO recognises the strong links between tourism, culture and development. Through exploring these relationships on a world-wide basis, best practice can be developed which benefits both local communities and tourists. I welcome the establishment of this new course as a contribution to maximising the opportunities that cultural tourism can offer." Barbara Woroncow OBE, Deputy Chair, UK National Commission for UNESCO

Culture Committee

Through the acquisition of knowledge and skills students will be able to move into a range of career opportunities in the cultural tourism sector; heritage management, tourism / cultural policy, international development and research.

The CTCC welcomes applicants progressing from undergraduate qualifications in the social sciences and humanities, as well as from more applied and inter-disciplinary undergraduate programmes such as tourism management. The course is also designed to meet the career development needs of professionals from organisations and government agencies concerned with the sustainable development of tourism, museums, heritage sites, and the cultural sectors.

“The Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change at Leeds Metropolitan University is already a magnet internationally for top-notch graduate students and scholars interested in the interdisciplinary study of tourism, both the theoretical issues relevant to it and its application. I am thus very happy to see that the Centre has developed its MA program in Cultural Tourism, which in addition to including the Centre's interdisicplinary theoretical and practical focus, promises the study of tourism as a cross-cultural and inter-cultural practice with important implications not just for scholars, but especially for tourism professionals, who must try to mediate in a sustainable way between local identities and needs and the expectations of tourists. The new MA course will further enhance the Centre's excellent reputation world wide." Professor Shelley Baranowski, Vice President International Commission for the History of Travel and Tourism, University of Akron, USA

“I fully support this new development. The MA in Cultural Tourism will be an important opportunity for students to learn more about the complex relationships between tourism and culture.” Ning Wang, Professor of Sociology, Sun Yat Sen University, Guangzhou, China

For details of the MA Course please visit our website www.tourism–culture.com where you can download an application form and a course brochure or, email the course leader Dr Philip Long at culturaltourism@...

Call for Expressions of Interest: Tourism Planning and Policies Case Studies

Editors: Dianne Dredge and John M. Jenkins

We are currently developing a book proposal that proposes a set of theoretically informed and reflective case studies about tourism planning and policy-making. The case studies will be presented as lucid and engaging stories that provide powerful explanatory insights into how tourism planning and policy-making happens. In doing so, the case studies will engage with appropriate and contemporary theoretical frameworks, concepts and ideas, and will also provide readers with opportunities for reflection, learning and theoretical development.

The editors’ focus is on the presentation of a well-structured and cohesive set of case study stories of tourism planning and policy-making. Good stories, underpinned by critical and reflective use of concepts, theories and models, can provide rich insights into the human condition, the politics of tourism policy, and the social construction of tourism issues and decision-making processes.

After expressions of interest have been lodged with us, we will contact authors and attempt to engage an international publisher. We received support from selected publishers before the launch of our recent book Tourism Planning and Policy (2007), published by Wiley & Sons.

We invite scholars and practitioners from various disciplines and backgrounds with interest in tourism, planning and policy-making to submit a 750-1000 word chapter proposal outlining the following:
  1. The issue and its context.
  2. A storyline (e.g. setting, context, plot, characters, the problem or dilemma and moral questions, if appropriate).
  3. Theoretical frameworks, concepts and models that may be used.
  4. Brief description of the research approaches, methodologies, data and data analysis.

We are as much interested in macro level studies focusing on issues of national interest as we are on the micro level and nuances of decision-making within organisations. Further information about the case study approach is contained within the attachment to this email. Any questions and/or chapter proposals should be emailed to Dianne Dredge (Dianne.Dredge@...) by Friday 3 October, 2008.

Dianne
