5th Annual Conference
Performing Tangier 2009
Critiquing postcolonialism and performing cultural diversity
http://icpsresearch.blogspot.com/2007/12/welcome.html

Call for Papers

Performing cultural diversity, re-orienting postcolonialism, negotiating the
future

Informed by various theoretical enterprises, postcolonial theory and discourse
for the last few decades have created unprecedented critical attention to
myriads of constituencies victimized by imperialist representation and colonial
rule. Many postcolonial readings have aimed primarily at subverting the
hierarchical colonial dichotomy and rewriting subaltern histories. Given the
status of our current geopolitical environment, some critics have already
started questioning the relevance of postcolonialism as a representative
discourse today. As the site of diverse historical, literary, cultural,
touristic, and artistic convergences, Tangier has been and continues to be the
quintessential postcolonial space for created hybridities and cultural
pluralism. The fifth international Tangier conference will focus on an
evaluation of the diverse discourses that inform "postcolonial" representations
(cultural, political, social, artistic, theoretical, and literary)
  of Tangier and their relation to the city as a historically material presence.
What is the relationship between Tangier as an imagined space and Tangier as a
performative space? How do postcolonial theories of hybridity, cultural
nomadism, and transcendental identities relate to the materially lived
experience of Tangerois? While ample attention has been given to Tangier in its
historically global relations, it is equally important to further investigate,
as Hardt and Negri put it, "the production of locality, that is, the social
machines that create and recreate the identities and differences that are
understood as the local."

The aim of the conference is therefore to interrogate and try to bridge the
chasm between the theoretical and the material, the local and the global, the
past and the present to open new venues for the future. Building on the themes
of the previous conferences, we specifically invite papers and panels that will
continue the evaluations of the voices of Tangier and its historical and
cultural status, and also gesture toward the future to propose and discuss the
cultural, literary, and artistic opportunities that Tangier will continue to
provide and the role it will continue to play in our ever shifting global
cultural map.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

• A critique of postcolonial Theories
• A critique of postcolonial representations of Tangier
• Performance and cultural diversity
• Tangier as a historical site of cultural diversity
• The future of Tangier as world cultural capital
• The status of Tangier within globalism
• Tangier between the word and the world
• Evaluations of individual authors and artists such as: Rachida Madani, Tahar
Ben Jelloun, Mohamed Choukri, Mohammed Azeddine Tazi, Ahmed Beroho, Souad
Bahechar, Moumen Smihi, Farida Belyazid, Anouar Majid, Jillali Farhati, Mohamed
Abdaoui, Zobeir Ben Bouchta, Moukhtar Chaoui, to Khalil el Ghrib, Badia Hadj
Nasser, the author of Nedjma… and many others…

The Organizing Committee invites papers from scholars of all relevant
disciplines – such as Performance Studies, English, History, Ethno-Musicology,
Language and Literature Programs, Cultural Studies, Communication, Sociology and
Anthropology, Political Science, Gender and Women’s Studies, Philosophy,
Psychology – as well as from Artists, and especially encourages papers that
focus on a critique of postcolonialism.

A 250 word abstract of proposed papers, along with a brief curriculum vitae,
must be submitted electronically (preferably in Word or Rich Text format) by 31
December 2008 to the Organizing Committee care of Professor Khalid Amine
(President of ICPS and Conference Convener). Selected conference papers will be
published in a special volume.

Emerging Scholars’ Panel: The conference is also a home for graduate students
and emerging scholars from different parts of the world. The establishment of an
emerging Scholars’ panel invites new voices to join the debate. Up to three
participants will be selected for this panel, and each panelist will have
fifteen minutes to deliver her/his paper. Graduate students whose papers are
accepted will receive free conference registration, free admission to conference
luncheon, and a one-year membership in ICPS. To be considered for this panel,
please submit your 10-12 page paper by January 15th 2009 to Pr Khalid Amine.

Registration Fee: $ 100 payable upon arrival. It includes 2 gala dinners
conference pack, tickets for public concerts and site-specific performances,
free guided tour of the medina, and the book of published proceedings from the
previous conference.

Attendees: Since the conference is again pulling a very international public,
registered attendees will be welcome too.

Colleagues -

EPA is sponsoring a meta analysis of the literature on the built environment and travel.  We have conducted a literature search, and contacted leading authors, but still expect to have missed some recent studies or studies in press.  Please send them on for inclusion in the meta study.  Thanks for the help.

Blackpool, United Kingdom

organised by

Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change

&

Institute of Northern Studies

Leeds Metropolitan University, United Kingdom

www.tourism-culture.com

Globally, coastlines are arguably the most important sites for tourist activity and tourism development. The various combinations of sea and shore have become highly popular and successful attractions, and a majority of the world’s leisure tourists cling to these liminal spaces at the margins of the land. The lure of the ‘seaside’, the beach, and the resorts which have evolved to service and entertain tourists, is immensely powerful, reflecting a long standing but ever-changing relationship between humans and the oceans. The dominance of coastal tourism within the modern period has generated a wealth of issues which this conference seeks to address, including: The patterns and trends in how tourists mobilise the resources of sea, sand and shore; Ways in which coastal communities have adapted to tourism; Environmental degradation and regeneration of coastal regions and marine ecologies; The historical forms, structures and aesthetics of ‘seaside’ resorts; Regeneration of ‘historic’ resorts; Continuing multi-national development of ‘pristine’ coastlines; Inclusivities and exclusivities in coastal resorts; Changing beach and seaside holiday ‘traditions’.

In addressing such issues this major international and multi-disciplinary conference seeks to promote dialogue across disciplinary boundaries on a global stage. We therefore welcome papers from: anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art and design history, cultural geography, cultural studies, ethnology and folklore, history, heritage studies, landscape studies, linguistics, museum studies, political science, sociology, tourism studies and urban/spatial planning. The event will seek to draw upon ideas, cases and best practice from international scholars and help develop new understandings of the relationships between tourism and the coast. It will also provide a major networking opportunity for international scholars, policy makers and professionals.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Key themes of interest to the conference include:

·          Histories of coastal tourism developments and resorts;

·          Regeneration of coastal economies;

·          Social and environmental impacts of coastal developments;

·          Representations of seaside holidays in popular culture;

·          Worker migrations to coastal sites;

·          Beach behaviours and traditions;

·          Myths of the sea and coastal communities;

·          Coastal resort art and architecture;

·          Tourist coastal colonies.

Please submit a 300 word abstract including title and full contact details as an electronic file to the conference manager Daniela Carl (ctcc@...). You may submit your abstract as soon as possible but no later than 2nd February 2009.

Subject: Call for Papers - Special Issue, Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism
Research on "Island Destinations"

Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research
CALL FOR PAPERS SPECIAL JOURNAL
ISSUE ON:             ISLAND DESTINATIONS

AIM
Islands are often popular tourism destinations attracting tourist numbers far
exceeding their native population. Their distinctive characteristics impose
specific requirements on developing and marketing tourism. In addition to unique
cultures and natural habitats, island destinations can often offer a degree of
exoticism or exclusivity to a trip. However,islands typically have limited
resources, and increased arrivals may strain the use of these beyond sustainable
levels. Issues related to the environmental impact of tourism, waste disposal
and conservation of biodiversity can be far more sensitive for islands than for
other destinations. Island tourism may also be exposed to greater volatility,
and in the future to the effects of global climate and environmental change.
Although papers have been published in the area, little effort has been made to
compile research on different aspects of island tourism together, thus offering
a multifaceted insight in the specifics of these destinations. Doing so is the
aim of this special issue. Potential topics may include:

Ø Tourism planning in island destinations
Ø Evaluation of tourism potential of environmental and cultural resources in
island destinations
Ø Cooperation, collaboration and competition in marketing island destinations
Ø Branding and positioning of island destinations
Ø Sustainable tourism in island destinations
Ø Island tourism and the environment
Ø Resource protection and biodiversity preservation in island destinations
Ø Tourism impacts on island destinations
Ø Carrying capacity of island destinations
Ø The role of local communities in island destinations
Ø Local and visitor perceptions of island destinations
Ø Specifics of the demand for island destinations
Ø Cultural and heritage tourism dimensions of island destinations
Ø Island accessibility - blessing or curse
Ø Comparative studies on tourism in island destinations
Ø The future: climate and environmental change and island destinations
Ø Other papers related to the theme of the special issue

CRITERIA FOR ACCEPTANCE
Quality of research, relevance to the thematic issue of island destinations, and
application of the research for professionals in the industry.

Maintaining our tradition, this year’s meeting will take place once again at The Sagamore – a historic island resort located on west shore of Lake George in the Adirondack region of New York.

Abstracts: Abstracts for oral presentations or posters are welcome on the following topics:

* Natural resource management

* Historical/cultural resource management

* Emerging and existing trends

* Measurement and forecasting

* Travel and tourism

* Sustainable tourism

* Human dimensions

* Policy development and planning

* Management application

* Methodological & theoretical development

Abstracts should be submitted no later than Friday November 14th, 2008. All abstracts need to be submitted using the online abstract submission interface available at the conference website: www.esf.edu/nerr

Abstracts should be 500 words or less and based on work that will be completed before the conference. Abstracts can be based on any type of data (e.g., surveys, experiments, content or historical analysis). Each abstract should provide a clear statement of the problem or objectives, give a brief description of the methods and substantive results, and end with a clear conclusion. Abstracts that describe proposed research are encouraged and will be reviewed and considered for inclusion in the poster session.

Call for Expressions of Interest: Tourism Planning and Policies Case Studies

Editors: Dianne Dredge and John M. Jenkins

We are currently developing a book proposal that proposes a set of theoretically informed and reflective case studies about tourism planning and policy-making. The case studies will be presented as lucid and engaging stories that provide powerful explanatory insights into how tourism planning and policy-making happens. In doing so, the case studies will engage with appropriate and contemporary theoretical frameworks, concepts and ideas, and will also provide readers with opportunities for reflection, learning and theoretical development.

The editors’ focus is on the presentation of a well-structured and cohesive set of case study stories of tourism planning and policy-making. Good stories, underpinned by critical and reflective use of concepts, theories and models, can provide rich insights into the human condition, the politics of tourism policy, and the social construction of tourism issues and decision-making processes.

After expressions of interest have been lodged with us, we will contact authors and attempt to engage an international publisher. We received support from selected publishers before the launch of our recent book Tourism Planning and Policy (2007), published by Wiley & Sons.

We invite scholars and practitioners from various disciplines and backgrounds with interest in tourism, planning and policy-making to submit a 750-1000 word chapter proposal outlining the following:
  1. The issue and its context.
  2. A storyline (e.g. setting, context, plot, characters, the problem or dilemma and moral questions, if appropriate).
  3. Theoretical frameworks, concepts and models that may be used.
  4. Brief description of the research approaches, methodologies, data and data analysis.

We are as much interested in macro level studies focusing on issues of national interest as we are on the micro level and nuances of decision-making within organisations. Further information about the case study approach is contained within the attachment to this email. Any questions and/or chapter proposals should be emailed to Dianne Dredge (Dianne.Dredge@...) by Friday 3 October, 2008.

Tourism and Retirement Migration: Destinations in Transition

Organizer: David Truly, Central Connecticut State University

Tourism and retirement migration has had significant impacts on communities and
countries throughout the world, as destinations continue to adapt to the needs
and expectations of aging tourists and retirees. Amenity migration has fueled
some of this growth but a variety of other factors and motivations can be
credited for changes in tourism and retirement migration. While these migration
streams offer benefits for many destinations, the challenge of addressing the
needs of both hosts and guests and the impacts of development can be
significant. This session invites case studies and theoretical studies that
examine any aspect of this topic. Possible topics could include:

- Amenity migration and tourism/retirement
- Second Home Development
- Linkages between tourism and retirement
- Impacts of tourism/retirement migration on destinations

Please send an abstract to David Truly (trulyd@...) by October 10, 2008.

Call for Papers

Mobility and Successful Ageing
An International Conference

Place: Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden
Date: 1 -3 April 2009
Deadline for abstract submission: 15 December 2008.
Conference web page: http://www.umu.se/soc_econ_geography/conference/call.html

Hereby the Department of Social and Economic Geography and the Centre of Population Studies/Ageing and Living Condition Programme, Umeå University, would like to call for papers to be presented at the international research conference Mobility and Successful Ageing. The conference is co-organized by the International Geographical Union's Commission for Population Geography and by the International Geographical Union's Commission on the Geography of Tourism, Leisure and Mobility.

Themes

In focus of the conference are the interrelations between two distinctive features of contemporary society; population ageing and geographical mobility. Mobility in different forms – permanent, temporary, virtual – is a topic of growing concern in the social sciences today, due to the trends of increasing mobility but also to the awareness regarding mobility's role in shaping spatial patterns and social relations. New opportunities to be mobile as well as constraints to mobility, in different forms, affect the socio-economic situation and everyday lives of both the young and the elderly. Mobility is usually associated with the young age groups, but mobility is increasingly important among the growing number of elderly people. Moving to attractive places, going for holidays, circulating between various activities in daily life, are all parts of the lives of the successful, wealthy and healthy elderly, whilst those constrained by physical and cognitive disabilities, social isolation and economic limitations may be forced to immobility and restrained from a successful ageing in our increasingly mobile society. The interrelations between ageing and mobility affect not only the living conditions of the elderly but also society in general and include issues such as mobility of the also the young, regional demographic changes, transportation, intergenerational contacts, housing demand, travel demand, supply of tourist activities etc.

The conference theme includes
  • geographical mobility in a broad sense;
  • international migration,
  • internal migration,
  • residential mobility,
  • commuting, daily travel,
  • tourism,
  • sojourning,
  • virtual mobility
  • etc
all related to various aspects of ageing; demographic ageing, physical and cognitive ageing, ageing in society and living conditions of the elderly.

For more information, please visit the conference web page http://www.umu.se/soc_econ_geography/conference/call.html or contact Prof Dieter K. Müller, Department of Social and Economic Geography, Umeå Universty ( dieter.muller@...).

Dear all,

I would like to propose one or more special sessions for the upcoming AAG relating to urban tourism. If possible this could be hosted by the urban geography and/or the economic geography specialty groups. I will contact these also.

Proposed title:

Tourism and the Urban Realm: Utopian Communities or Spheres of Exclusivity

In the last decade there has been increasing attention to the phenomenon of urban tourism as displayed by the growing number of articles but also edited collections and monographs. Discussions have centered, for instance, on the role of tourism and the broader experience economy in the commodification of urban areas. Some observers have used regulation theory to explain the dynamics of tourism growth in cities. Others have examined the spatial aspects of tourisms growth within the urban realm. There is a growing understanding that while there is a tendency for tourism-related activities to cluster in so-called tourist bubbles, an increasing number of visitors have begun to search for attractions beyond these areas, often infiltrating into more traditional neighborhoods.

Moreover, there has also been a growing tendency in many parts of the world with Dubai being the poster child of this tendency to develop instant cities very much based on leisure, recreation, and tourism activities.

This session (or sessions) calls for papers that concentrate on the interface of urban communities to tourism and the broader experience economy. In addition to case studies, the session could include observations on one or the following issues. The growth of tourism and marginalization of certain groups of people or activities; neo-bohemias and tourism; tourism (the experience economy) and the creative class; instant tourism cities and their effects, etc. In depth examinations of cities like Las Vegas and those that try to emulate them are also welcome.

Please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested in presenting.

Gaming and Casino Tourism: The Role of Place and
Competition Among Places

Organizer: Wes Roehl, Temple University

Understanding gambling in today’s society is a challenge.
It is a challenge for a number of reasons which include:
constant innovation in games, technology, and legislative
status; the fact that there is no single gambling industry—
instead there is a mix of private and public sector players
that may have complimentary, competitive, or neutral
relationships to each other; the often strong and deeply
held opinions about gambling; and the important role of
place in shaping both supply and demand—for example Tunica
differs from East St. Louis which differs from Las Vegas
which differs from Montreal.

Given these challenges there is much work that needs to be
done.  Possible topics could include:

*Cultural, economic, environmental, and social impacts of
gaming on the host destination: both longitudinal studies
of a destination and cross-sectional studies of multiple
destinations;

*Gambling on the Internet and its current and potential
implications for gambling destinations;

*Geographic variation in gaming business models;

*The geography of problem gaming;

*Substitutes and complimentary products in gaming;

*Sustainable gaming;

*Technology, its impact today and its implications for the
future;

* Urban planning and public policy lessons from new and
mature gambling destinations;

etc.

Please send an abstract to Wes Roehl (wroehl@...) by
October 10, 2008.

Hi Folks,

I have received several responses to my call for papers to the AAG heritage tourism session. However, I have room for one more presentation. I’d like to get the session put together in the next couple of weeks, so please do respond asap so that I can fit you into the session. I don’t know what the session will be called yet, not until I see what all the papers are about.

Thanks,
Dallen

TTRI Research Seminar

Abstract

In spite of apparent stiff competition, the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards Ceremony (the ‘Bollywood

Oscars’) came to Yorkshire in June 2007.  The event comprised a

series of parties, dinners, a film premiere, a celebrity cricket match and culminated in the awards ceremony itself. The four day ‘weekend’ cost an estimated £5 million to stage, of which more than £2 million was provided by the regional development agency. The event was considered a great success, officially at least, because it attracted significant media attention in the UK and abroad (especially in India) and generated additional revenue from visitors, thus strengthening the regional economy.  Such perceptions are, of course, contested.

Decisions to support events and festivals such as this emerge from local political processes. Yet, as Hall and Rusher (2005:229) have noted, ‘Despite their significance, there still remains relatively little analysis of the political context of events and the means by which events come to be developed and hosted within communities.. ‘ This seminar will respond to this deficiency by considering the following: Why were the awards staged in Yorkshire? What was the process of attracting the awards to this locality? How should we interpret or

understand such a process of tourism policy formation?

FWD: From Dr. William James Smith, Jr., of the Department of Environmental Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Welcome to Las Vegas!  It is exciting to have the AAG visit.  Although many visitors do not realize it, the surrounding area is a fascinating place to visit the great outdoors.  Some opportunities are described below, and the time to travel is estimated from the Las Vegas Strip (rush hour can lengthen the trip by 30 minutes).  Perhaps my personal favorite when the weather is cooler is Valley of Fire, especially the indigenous water hole that holds water even in the summer time.  There are also many longer-range trips worth doing spanning southern Utah, northern Arizona, the Great Basin National Park, and southeast California.

Redrock Canyon National Conservation Area: About 20 minutes away.  Great place for hiking, rock-scrambling and exploring, and watching or joining in rock-climbing.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area:  30-45 minutes away. This place offers a fascinating drive through, and it connects to the Valley of Fire.  It has an extremely diverse, colorful landscape.  The water is also great if you can stand the cold.

Mt. Charleston: A 45 minute drive up Kyle Canyon gives you great hikes, and a good meal at the cozy Mt. Charleston lodge.  Expect it to be about 20 degrees cooler up there than in Las Vegas.  There are elk!, mountain lion, deer, evergreen forests, skiing in the winter, and thanks to orographic lifting, booming thunderstorms in the summer. It is an ecological island in the desert rising up to around 10,000 feet.

Valley of Fire: About an hour away.  This is a great place to go in March.  Same weather as in Vegas, but clean air, and a really fun area to explore, with amazing, surreal red sandstone formations and fascinating petroglyphs.  Also look for sheep and the native water hole.

Desert National Wildlife Refuge: About an hour away.  Some good birding opportunities here.  A nice, quiet spot with some big trees and spring-fed pools, and lush brush.

Kelso Dunes: 1 hr 45 minutes.  These dunes are in the Mojave National Preserve.  A great spring hike.  Climb up the dunes and have fun running down.  They make a neat sound when you step on them a certain way.  The drive there through the Preserve is beautiful and includes passage through an amazing Joshua tree forest (better than any I've seen at Joshua Tree National Park).  Feel free to pull over and explore.

China Ranch Date Farm and Tecopa Hot Springs:  Not sure of the time. At China Ranch you can free sample the numerous varieties of dates grown there. Also, there's a really cool hike to a slot canyon, past the Amargosa River and through a lunar-like landscape.  About 15 minutes from China Ranch you can enjoy your own private hot springs at various enterprises in Tecopa --  you can also rent rustic cabins there.

Black Canyon: 2 hours. This is the canyon you see from Hoover Dam.  I've not been here yet, but I hear that it is fantastic.  There are hiker and boater-accessible hot-springs down there too.  For a price, you can boat this in a kayak, raft or canoe, through various local outfitters.

Mojave Desert: If nothing else, just drive out of the city, park somewhere and check out the Mojave Desert.  It looks brown and boring (aside from the mountains etc.) at 60 miles per hour, but has its own serene beauty when you explore it on foot.

Impressive shows featuring water and family shows

Le Rev at the Wynn Hotel is my favorite acrobatics and water show https://boxoffice.wynnlasvegas.com/

O at the Bellagio is also great http://www.bellagio.com/o-cirque-du-soleil/o-cirque-du-soleil.aspx

Lance Burton's magic show http://www.lanceburton.com/

And a neat aquarium is at Mandalay bay http://www.mandalaybay.com/entertainment/sharkreef.aspx

A nice but far smaller aquarium at Caesar's Palace is next to the famous FAO kids toy store and a robotic Atlantis clash where the characters fight, shoot fire, etc.

The Venetian has a neat indoor and outdoor gondola ride and is pleasant to walk around

The Bellagio has an amazing 4 story tall fountain show at night set to music and free, and inside are some neat seasonal theatrical displays and fantastic blown glass

Food

Our version of an Asian Town collection of restaurants is on Spring Mountain Blvd., so if you want an ethnic meal and want to save money, this is a short cab ride from the strip.
