Gaming and Casino Tourism: The Role of Place and
Competition Among Places

Organizer: Wes Roehl, Temple University

Understanding gambling in today’s society is a challenge.
It is a challenge for a number of reasons which include:
constant innovation in games, technology, and legislative
status; the fact that there is no single gambling industry—
instead there is a mix of private and public sector players
that may have complimentary, competitive, or neutral
relationships to each other; the often strong and deeply
held opinions about gambling; and the important role of
place in shaping both supply and demand—for example Tunica
differs from East St. Louis which differs from Las Vegas
which differs from Montreal.

Given these challenges there is much work that needs to be
done. Possible topics could include:

*Cultural, economic, environmental, and social impacts of
gaming on the host destination: both longitudinal studies
of a destination and cross-sectional studies of multiple
destinations;

*Gambling on the Internet and its current and potential
implications for gambling destinations;

*Geographic variation in gaming business models;

*The geography of problem gaming;

*Substitutes and complimentary products in gaming;

*Sustainable gaming;

*Technology, its impact today and its implications for the
future;

* Urban planning and public policy lessons from new and
mature gambling destinations;

etc.

Please send an abstract to Wes Roehl (wroehl@...) by
ASAP since they are due to AAG headquarters by October 16,
2008.

Please share this call for abstracts with colleagues /
repost on appropriate mailing lists.

Details on the conference and the registration process can

Las Vegas AAG: March 2009

Tourism and the Urban Realm: Utopian Communities or Spheres of Exclusivity

In the last decade there has been increasing attention to the phenomenon of urban tourism as displayed by the growing number of articles but also edited collections and monographs. Discussions have centered, for instance, on the role of tourism and the broader experience economy in the commodification of urban areas. Some observers have used regulation theory to explain the dynamics of tourism growth in cities. Others have examined the spatial aspects of tourism's growth within the urban realm. There is a growing understanding that while there is a tendency for tourism-related activities to cluster in so-called 'tourist bubbles', an increasing number of visitors have begun to search for attractions beyond these areas, often infiltrating into more traditional neighborhoods.

Moreover, there has also been a growing tendency in many parts of the world - with Dubai being the poster child of this tendency - to develop 'instant' cities very much based on leisure, recreation, and tourism activities.

This session (or sessions) calls for papers that concentrate on the interface of urban communities to tourism and the broader experience economy. In addition to case studies, the session could include observations on one or the following issues. The growth of tourism and marginalization of certain groups of people or activities; neo-bohemias and tourism; tourism (the experience economy) and the creative class; tourism and its impact on urban design; instant tourism cities and their effects, retirement communities, etc. In depth examinations of cities like Las Vegas and those that try to emulate them are also welcome.

TTRI Research Seminar

Abstract

In spite of apparent stiff competition, the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards Ceremony (the ‘Bollywood

Oscars’) came to Yorkshire in June 2007.  The event comprised a

series of parties, dinners, a film premiere, a celebrity cricket match and culminated in the awards ceremony itself. The four day ‘weekend’ cost an estimated £5 million to stage, of which more than £2 million was provided by the regional development agency. The event was considered a great success, officially at least, because it attracted significant media attention in the UK and abroad (especially in India) and generated additional revenue from visitors, thus strengthening the regional economy.  Such perceptions are, of course, contested.

Decisions to support events and festivals such as this emerge from local political processes. Yet, as Hall and Rusher (2005:229) have noted, ‘Despite their significance, there still remains relatively little analysis of the political context of events and the means by which events come to be developed and hosted within communities.. ‘ This seminar will respond to this deficiency by considering the following: Why were the awards staged in Yorkshire? What was the process of attracting the awards to this locality? How should we interpret or

understand such a process of tourism policy formation?

Dear friends

IHTEC is a partner with Science for Peace, Pugwash, Global Issues Project. We are holding a Public Forum on Water Issues. I have attached the poster invite and the list of water issues being considered at the follow up 'Expert Round Table on Water'. As this groups focus is on curriculum and education for the future I have two requests that I will need by Nov 5, 2008:

1. What is being taught around the topic of 'Water Sustainability' and how? Please look at the list of issues and align your answers. As a session chair, I would be interested in educational document that can be shared with the Round Table. This includes web links to documents, lesson plans, or any methodologies that are being taught around the world today, or that might be included in schools in the future. Thanks.

2. If you are near to Toronto:

TOURISM AND ECONOMIC RECESSION: RESPONDING TO FINANCIAL AND ECONOMIC CRISIS

Editors: C. Michael Hall & Chris Cooper

There has been growing interest in tourism studies in recent years on the role
that crisis plays in both tourism development and influencing tourist flows, as
well as the means by which it should be managed. Much of the focus has been on
responses to natural disasters and their subsequent economic and social impact.
However, the current economic recession in most of the developed world and the
global financial crisis provides an opportunity to better understand how tourism
responds to such economic challenges and the actions that consumers,
destinations, governments and firms take in terms of changing their behaviours.
Although many NTOs, RTOS and firms are indicating a potential downturn in
tourist numbers as a result of economic recession tourism is still seen as an
important means of income generation. For example, Tourism New Zealand has
launched a promotional campaign in China to try and offset the drop in visitor
numbers in other markets while Iceland has also noted the importance of tourism
as a means of attracting foreign exchange and generating employment as a
response to its own financial problems. On the other hand how will the economic
downturn in China impact upon the forecast huge rise in Chinese international
outbound travel.

We are therefore interested in papers on this theme. Papers would be
particularly welcomed on the following topics:

• Financial behaviour and strategies of tourism firms and entrepreneurs
• Consumer behaviour at times of economic recession
• Government policies with respect to tourism and economic growth and
development
• The affects of financial and economic crisis on destination image
• The affects of financial and economic crisis on business and conference
tourism
• Tourism firm adaptation to financial stress
• The potential affects of fluctuating costs of fuel and energy on tourism
and/or airlines
• Historical accounts of tourism responses to previous economic recessions and
lessons to be learnt
• Tourism business strategies and their viability during economic downturns,
e.g. 'budget' travel models
• Economic modelling of the impact of the financial crisis on tourism
• Financial and economic constraints on travel
• Impacts of the financial and economic crisis on event sponsorship
• Impacts of the financial and economic crisis on sustainable tourism
initiatives, especially with respect to climate and environmental change and
pro-poor tourism

Experiencing Difference
Changing Tourism and Tourists' Experiences

Aalborg University, Denmark, 27 - 29 May 2009

First call for papers

Please visit the updated conference website at www.atlas-euro.org

Experiences have always been a central part of tourism - from the educational pursuits of the 17th century Grand Tours and up until extreme sport endeavours of the present day. What seems to have changed most significantly within recent years is, however, the efforts and ingenuity that tourism marketers put into creating experience possibilities that set their tourism destination, attraction, accommodation facility or other types of tourism services apart from competitors' and make their offers the favoured choice among tourists. And though the tourism experience is personal - a marriage between expectations, actual encounter and memories - the tourism marketer still has the possibility to heavily influence the experience in a given direction provided that market research has been central in forming the experience offer. A market-driven approach as described here, or outside-in approach in which the market determines the offers of the destination or attraction, may, however, be questioned, as it can be argued that tourism marketers should rather focus on developing experience possibilities that are closely tied to the identity and cultural heritage from which they originate. Hence an inside-out approach is also traceable in the experience literature which is tied up closely with the discussions on authenticity that repeatedly appears in a tourism context. Rather than seeing these two approaches as incompatible opposites, it may make more sense to seem them as the two ends on a continuum, which also suggests that various degrees of combinations of the two may be adopted both by scholars and practitioners.

The theme of the 2009 annual ATLAS conference has been inspired by this recent surge of interest in tourism and experiences, and papers will reflect the many different roles of experiences in tourism.

  • From the perspective of tourists: To what extent are experiences new reasons to go? What role does the tourist see him/herself as having in the experience and how does past experiences influence tourist preferences and behaviour?
  • From the perspective of tourist enterprises: How are pressures for making products more experience-oriented handled by large, small and micro tourism enterprises? And what are the risks in relation to tourists who prefer things 'as they have always been'?
  • From the perspective of destination management organisations: How can experiences build bridges between fashion, architecture, design, sport, edutainment and social activities? And how are public tourism provider and private tourism enterprises engaged in new experience initiatives.
  • From the perspective of local inhabitants: How can 'experience places' be reconciled with the everyday lives of local inhabitants? And do new inventive experience offers conflict with local sense of cultural heritage and authenticity?
  • From the perspective of tourism and leisure studies: What are the consequences of different scientific approaches (e.g. economic, sociological) for the understanding of experiences? And, not least, after the dust of the debates has settled, what is new, useful and exciting compared to existing ways of conceptualising tourism?

Abstracts should be submitted to ATLAS by using the abstract submission form at the ATLAS website no later than February 15th 2009.

For more information on the submission of abstracts and all the details on the conference, please visit the ATLAS website at www.atlas-euro.org.

TTRI Research Seminar

DMOs in UK cities are increasingly recognizing the visitation

opportunities offered by students at local higher educational

institutions, which reflects the wider acknowledgement of this market by the tourism sector in general.  Indeed students have been referred to as the ‘bread and butter’ of the tourism industry, acknowledging in particular the income expected after graduation.
University alumni therefore represent a marketing opportunity for cities in which there is substantial higher education provision.
The market potential is not restricted solely to ex-students themselves on repeat visits; as with other repeat visitors, alumni returning to their
alma mater and/or its locale may be accompanied by relatives and friends and may also offer ambassadorial potential for word-of-mouth recommendation. University alumni arguably represent a viable yet largely untapped destination market segment, and whilst both student and repeat visitor markets have both featured in the academic literature and been recognised by relevant marketing agencies, the alumni market continues to be neglected relative to other student segments.  The paper discusses a study, undertaken for Marketing Manchester, of the alumni market for Greater Manchester.  It examines alumni motivations and constraints in relation to returning to the city and its sub-region using a sample of 837 alumni from the University of Salford.  The findings, including the results from market segmentation and profiling analyses, are discussed together with their strategic implications.

Dr Peter Schofield is an Associate Director of the Management and

Management Sciences Research Institute at the University of Salford in Greater Manchester.  He has published widely on various aspects of

urban tourism, consumer behaviour and destination marketing.  His

current research interests include consumer decision making, destination and events marketing, resident attitudes to tourism development and service quality management with particular reference to hotel service failure and recovery strategies.

Call for Papers

"Shifting the Geography of Reason: Migrations and Diasporas"
Interdisciplinary Conference
Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA)
University of Miami
Coral Gables, FL (USA)
12-15 August 2009

The Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA) invites proposals from
scholars in any discipline, including graduate students, who aim to "shift
the geography of reason" by exploring critical, theoretical, and creative
questions about or relating to the Caribbean, its Diaspora, and the "global
south" more generally, including the South in the North. The conference
will take place at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, on August 12-15,
2009.

We particularly welcome North-South and South-South intersections and/or
dialogues. The theme for this meeting deals with migrations and diaspora.
While proposals dealing with the broader organizing theme of the CPA
("shifting the geography of reason") will be welcome, the organizers are
especially interested in presentations and panels that highlight questions
about space, traveling, national and transnational communities, gender and
sexuality, and issues of race and identity across migrations and diasporas
not only in the Caribbean, but globally. We accept proposals in English,
French, and Spanish.

The principle goal of the CPA is to support the free exchange of ideas and
foster an intellectual community that is truly representative of the
diversity of voices and perspectives that is paradigmatic of, but not
limited to, the Caribbean. The Caribbean is thus understood not solely as a
geopolitical region, but more generally as a trope to investigate certain
dimensions of the multiple undersides of modernity. Likewise, philosophy is
conceived, not as an isolated academic discipline, but as rigorous
theoretical reflection about fundamental problems faced by humanity.
Understood in this way, Caribbean philosophy is a transdisciplinary form of
interrogation informed by scholarly knowledges as well as by practices and
artistic expressions that elucidate fundamental questions that emerge in
contexts of "discovery," conquest, racial, gender, and sexual domination,
genocide, dependency, and exploitation as well as freedom, emancipation,
and decolonization.

Reflection about these areas often appears in philosophical texts, but also
in a plethora of other genres such as literature, music, and historical
writings. The CPA invites theoretical engagements with all such questions,
thematic areas, and genres with emphasis on any given discipline or field,
but with a common interest in "shifting the geography of reason," by which
we mean approaching the Caribbean and the "global south" in general as
zones of sustainable practices and knowledges. As stated above, the
principal areas of focus in the 2009 conference are migrations and
diasporas.

Send submissions for panels and abstracts of individual presentations by
February 15, 2009, by email to <caribphil@...>. Abstracts should
succinctly state the problem(s) addressed and identify the sources used in
one paragraph to one page per individual presentation. All titles must
include the name of the presenter, the highest university degree obtained,
and the current institutional affiliation, if any. We will review proposals
in English, French, and Spanish and will create panels for presentations in
those three languages. More relevant information about membership, panel
proposals, and the goals of the associations attached.

Panel presentations must include a description of the panel as well as
title and abstracts of individual presentations and the basic biographical
information (as listed above) of each presenter. The maximum of presenters
per panel is four, in addition to a moderator. The fourth panelist could be
a presenter or a commentator.

We will consider submissions of two to three interconnected panels on key
issues that relate to the main theme of the conference. These panels will
take place at different days and times throughout the conference to be
determined by the organizing committee. We also encourage panels that seek
to establish dialogues among scholars, and artists, professionals,
activists, and community leaders who are in dialogue with intellectual and
scholarly work.

All presenters will be asked to pay conference fees, and in most cases,
membership to the association as well. The conditions for membership and
the fees for this year will be announced soon and are expected to be no
more than most professional associations in the United States.

The conference aims to share the latest research findings and debates in these areas of critical concern for researchers, policy makers and practitioners alike.

  • Economic development policy and regeneration dimensions of festivals and cultural events
  • Partnerships and collaborations in festival planning, management and performance

  • The contribution of festivals and cultural events to place images
  • The re-structuring, re-shaping and re-animation of city spaces and new communities through festivals and cultural events

Globally, coastlines are arguably the most important sites for tourist activity and tourism development. The various combinations of sea and shore have become highly popular and successful attractions, and a majority of the world’s leisure tourists cling to these liminal spaces at the margins of the land. The lure of the ‘seaside’, the beach, and the resorts which have evolved to service and entertain tourists, is immensely powerful, reflecting a long standing but ever-changing relationship between humans and the oceans. The dominance of coastal tourism within the modern period has generated a wealth of issues which this conference seeks to address, including: The patterns and trends in how tourists mobilise the resources of sea, sand and shore; Ways in which coastal communities have adapted to tourism; Environmental degradation and regeneration of coastal regions and marine ecologies; The historical forms, structures and aesthetics of ‘seaside’ resorts; Regeneration of ‘historic’ resorts; Continuing multi-national development of ‘pristine’ coastlines; Inclusivities and exclusivities in coastal resorts; Changing beach and seaside holiday ‘traditions’.

In addressing such issues this major international and multi-disciplinary conference seeks to promote dialogue across disciplinary boundaries on a global stage. We therefore welcome papers from: anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art and design history, cultural geography, cultural studies, ethnology and folklore, history, heritage studies, landscape studies, linguistics, museum studies, political science, sociology, tourism studies and urban/spatial planning. The event will seek to draw upon ideas, cases and best practice from international scholars and help develop new understandings of the relationships between tourism and the coast. It will also provide a major networking opportunity for international scholars, policy makers and professionals.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Key themes of interest to the conference include:

·          Histories of coastal tourism developments and resorts;

·          Regeneration of coastal economies;

·          Social and environmental impacts of coastal developments;

·          Representations of seaside holidays in popular culture;

·          Worker migrations to coastal sites;

·          Beach behaviours and traditions;

·          Myths of the sea and coastal communities;

·          Coastal resort art and architecture;

·          Tourist coastal colonies.

Please submit a 300 word abstract including title and full contact details as an electronic file to the conference manager Daniela Carl (ctcc@...). You may submit your abstract as soon as possible but no later than 2nd February 2009.
