Dear List Members

The Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change (CTCC) would like to remind you of the approaching final deadline (16th March 2009) for receiving abstracts for the following conference:

Resorting to the Coast:

Tourism, Heritage and Cultures of the Seaside

25—29 June 2009

Blackpool, United Kingdom

organised by

Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change

&

Institute of Northern Studies

Leeds Metropolitan University, United Kingdom

www.tourism-culture.com

Globally, coastlines are arguably the most important sites for tourist activity and tourism development. The various combinations of sea and shore have become highly popular and successful attractions, and a majority of the world’s leisure tourists cling to these liminal spaces at the margins of the land. The lure of the ‘seaside’, the beach, and the resorts which have evolved to service and entertain tourists, is immensely powerful, reflecting a long standing but ever-changing relationship between humans and the oceans. The dominance of coastal tourism within the modern period has generated a wealth of issues which this conference seeks to address, including: The patterns and trends in how tourists mobilise the resources of sea, sand and shore; Ways in which coastal communities have adapted to tourism; Environmental degradation and regeneration of coastal regions and marine ecologies; The historical forms, structures and aesthetics of ‘seaside’ resorts; Regeneration of ‘historic’ resorts; Continuing multi-national development of ‘pristine’ coastlines; Inclusivities and exclusivities in coastal resorts; Changing beach and seaside holiday ‘traditions’.

In addressing such issues this major international and multi-disciplinary conference seeks to promote dialogue across disciplinary boundaries on a global stage. We therefore welcome papers from: anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art and design history, cultural geography, cultural studies, ethnology and folklore, history, heritage studies, landscape studies, linguistics, museum studies, political science, sociology, tourism studies and urban/spatial planning. The event will seek to draw upon ideas, cases and best practice from international scholars and help develop new understandings of the relationships between tourism and the coast. It will also provide a major networking opportunity for international scholars, policy makers and professionals.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Key themes of interest to the conference include:

·          Histories of coastal tourism developments and resorts;

·          Regeneration of coastal economies;

·          Social and environmental impacts of coastal developments;

Meeting Description:

The concept of tourism invokes multiple and complex interpretations. Tourism is both a problem and a solution to a problem. The theoretical and empirical base can be approached from a large number of perspectives (see themes). More than anything else, however, tourism is seen as a kind of social practice. As a consequence the focus shifts towards the role and responsibility of the individual in larger contexts, with attention being devoted to the future of tourism and the sustainability of it all.

Call for Papers
18th Nordic Symposium in Tourism and Hospitality Research
22th - 25th October 2009, Esbjerg, Denmark
and
Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism.

Adventure Tourism

Associate Professor Truls Engstrřm, Norwegian School of Hotel management, University of Stavanger, Norway and
Dr Carl Cater, Senior Lecturer, Department of Tourism, Leisure, Hotel and Sport Management, Griffith University, Australia
(From 1st May 2009: Institute of Biological, Environmental & Rural Sciences, Aberystwyth University, UK)

Adventure tourism is an industry sector that has seen significant global growth as outdoor recreation opportunities have become increasingly commercialised. It includes a great diversity of activities from those with little actual risk to those posing quite significant challenges to participants. Despite the prevalence of these activities in the Nordic tourism product, and some existing case studies, there has been little to bring this research together to provide a broad overview of developments in the region. Partly this may be explained by the domestic market in these countries being largely made up of independent adventure recreationalists, as opposed to tourists. However, being endowed with well managed wilderness environments and having proximity to significant source markets, there is great opportunity for further development of this sector.

Authors agree that adventure tourism activities include specific elements such as: specific skills and elements of risk (perceived or real) in which the outcome is influenced by the participation. However, increased commodification of the adventure experience has involved transfer of risk responsibility to commercial operators. In this realm the experience may become overloaded with high expectations, especially if the setting and perceptions of the organizer differ from that of the tourist.

The adventure industry is expected to continue its growth in size and diversity and it is important that the academic and industry understanding of the adventure sector and the broader adventure phenomenon are taken seriously. Even though academics have started to conduct research in the area our research based knowledge of adventure tourism is still modest and fragmented, and based mostly on studies in a North American or Australasian context. This is partly due to the fact that adventure tourism is only recently establishing itself as an academic line of inquiry but more significantly because it is a very complex and dynamic tourism phenomenon.

For this conference session we invite researchers to submit manuscripts on current issues in adventure tourism development and related topics of relevance for the Nordic Countries. Manuscripts will be pre-circulated prior to the conference in order to facilitate and encourage debate.

Selected papers will be invited to contribute towards a special issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism.

Among the topics of interest are:  Sustainable adventure tourism; Risk management; Energy consumption in the adventure industry; History of adventure tourism; Supply and demand of adventure tourism; Perceptions of adventure; Proliferation of stakeholders; Trends in adventure tourism ; Technological change; Participation diversity; Motivations and constraints; Cultural differences in adventure; Mental and physiological impact of participation; User group conflicts

Submissions:
Abstracts of 250 words are due May 1st, 2009. Please send to c.cater@...

CALL FOR PAPERS: Special Edition of Tourism Review

HEALTH TOURISM

Guest Editor

Professor C. Michael Hall
Department of Management
University of Canterbury
Christchurch
New Zealand
michael.hall@...

Health tourism in the form of spa, wellness and medical has become a
significant, and sometimes controversial, dimension of tourism in a number of
new and long-established destinations. Several social, economic and
environmental changes are responsible for an increase of leisure based health
orientation and a provision of new health services in a leisure setting. Reduced
social support as a result of the adoptionof neoliberal policies, a globalised
approach to health marketing and provision, a broader understanding of health,
and a worldwide growth and differentiation of the leisure structures of wellness
resorts (spas, hospitals, wellness hotels, wellness tourism) have encouraged
spas, health resorts, health care providers and tourism destinations to develop
health services for self-paying guests and to develop niche markets in order to
survive in an increasingly competitive environment.

The global understanding of health as “a state of complete physical, mental and
social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO 2005)
should be seen as a key reason for the development of new international health
tourism products. The perception of health has changed over the last decades and
being healthy now means more than not being ill and includes notions of
wellness. Therefore, the continued growth of a health awareness in industrial
society, the significance of image to identity, and the continued ageing of
society all point to the expansion of health oriented tourism well into the
Twenty-First Century.

This special edition on health tourism is designed to cover a range of issues
surrounding the consumption and production of health tourism in contemporary
society including, but not limited too, the following:

- health tourism and resort rejuvenation
- cross-border health and medical tourism
- development of health, medical and spa tourism
- the politics and regulation of medical tourism
- consumer perception and understanding of health and medical tourism
- health tourism and an aging society
- the health tourism market
- health and medical tourism in developing countries
- government and insurance company sponsored health tourism
- health tourism and destination marketing

All papers submitted for the special edition of Tourism Review will be subject
to double blind peer review before publication and should conform with all
criteria, submitting and formatting requirements as described at:
http://info.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/journals.htm?id=tr&PHPSESSID=tc\
crr0q6dcu79frl8i

Abstracts (250 words) should be send to Professor C. Michael Hall
(michael.hall@...) by June 30 , 2009. Information about acceptance
by July 30 2009. Submission of full papers by December 2009. The publication of
the special issue is planned for late end of 2010/beginning of 2011.

Tourism Review aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of tourism as an
interdisciplinary phenomenon and to provide insights into developments, issues
and methods in tourism research. As the official journal of AIEST, the
International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism, it promotes an
exchange of scientific concepts and research findings across different cultures
and language barriers as well as serving as a platform of results, in
particular, for young researchers. The journal is targeted at a broad audience
including scientists as well as policymakers and managers.

At AAGs in Las Vegas, a group of students and faculty had a very generative early morning session on critical geography in/of Latin America and the Caribbean. As a way to sustain that conversation and include more people, we have started a listserve and welcome all those who are interested to join. The purpose of the list is to share resources and ideas about critical geography in Latin America and the Caribbean and to circulate ideas and information from Latin America and the Caribbean on the many existing practices of critical geography in the region. Information in all languages of the region is welcome.

To subscribe, send a message to listserv@... . In the body of the message, write: sub crit-lac-geog . Do not put anything in the subject heading.

Dear Sanjay and Everyone:

I second Sanjay’s sentiment about seeing everyone in Vegas. It was a thrill as always to rub shoulders with the likes of all of you.

Something we (as a group) failed to do during the RTS Business Meeting was publicly and gratefully acknowledge all the work Sanjay put into the group as its chair. I for one am particularly grateful for all of his efforts. He performed his chair duties responsibly and exemplarily. Thanks, Sanjay, for another great two years with RTS. Dan Olsen has some big shoes to fill, but he’ll be up to the task!

Cheers,

Dallen

Global Games and Local Legacies:  Understanding Olympics Outcomes in Host Cities

The Urban Studies Program at Simon Fraser University (http://www.sfu.ca/urban)  invites scholars and practitioners from all fields to submit paper proposals for a symposium entitled “Global Games and Local Legacies: Understanding Olympics Outcomes in Host Cities,” to be held in Vancouver, Canada, from October 22-24, 2009. The symposium will involve organized panels, moderated discussion, and an open forum for ideas about urban Olympics outcomes research. The panels will be held at the Vancouver and Surrey campuses of SFU, and the symposium will also include organized field visits through sites that merit special attention and monitoring for their post-Olympic legacy on Metro Vancouver’s urban fabric. Presentations of both completed scholarship and research at the more exploratory stage are welcome, as is graduate student work. The symposium will be followed by a selective, peer-reviewed publication of the proceedings.

An interdisciplinary team of faculty and graduate student researchers based at SFU Urban Studies has been investigating the potential urban outcomes of the Winter 2010 Olympic Games for the Vancouver region. We are taking a comparative approach based on observed outcomes in two prior Winter Olympic host cities, Salt Lake City and Calgary, using a mixture of quantitative indicators of impacts and qualitative impressions from researchers based in these other host cities. Beginning from the premise of this research --that the Olympics provide an exceptional opportunity to examine some of the most urgent issues facing cities today -- this symposium will bring together scholars and practitioners to place the Vancouver Olympics story within a global context to understand better the real costs and benefits of the Games for host cities. We invite proposals from all fields that explore the urban impacts of the Olympics, past, present, and future.  Themes might include, but are not limited, to the following:

1. Public indebtedness 2. Polarization (income, poverty, etc.) 3. Political impacts 4. Public facilities and amenities  5. Sprawl, transportation, and land use  6. Social cohesion 7. Creativity/cultural impact 8. Local economy 9. Social policy

Submitting Your Proposal for the Symposium Deadline: July 15, 2009

Please send a proposal with a title, 3-5 keywords, and an abstract of 250 words or fewer, including your full name, position, and contact information by July 15, 2009 to legacies@.... Please indicate on your proposal whether you wish to apply for one of the limited travel grants available for presenters who produce a complete paper. Your submission will be reviewed by SFU faculty and you will be contacted by August 15.

Exploring Tourism III: Issues in PhD Research

University of Nottingham

Wednesday 1st-Thursday 2nd July 2009

TTRI are really excited with the response to the forthcoming ‘Exploring Tourism III: Issues in PhD Research’ conference and want to remind you that there are still places available. We are also delighted to announce the following confirmed keynote speakers for the event: Professor Chris Cooper, Director of the TTRI here at Nottingham, Professor Rhodri Thomas, ITT Chair at Leeds Metropolitan University; Professor Adam Blake, Professor of Economics at Bournemouth University and Professor David Crouch, Professor of Cultural Geography, Leisure and Lifestyle at the University of Derby. Alongside these keynote speakers we aim to offer workshops and informal ‘free space’ for students to interact and discuss their research in an informal, supportive and multidisciplinary environment. PhD students in tourism and related subjects will be able to discuss and exchange their experiences. Non-presenting PhD students are also very welcome to attend.

To ensure the conference is as inclusive as possible, those wishing to present may select an aspect of the research process or some aspect of their research topic. For example, research process could include experiences of learning in a multidisciplinary environment, reflexivity or reflexive practice, managing supervisors, or issues relating to gaining access to data and/or participants. For those wishing to present an aspect of their research topic, it is preferable if focus is given to either methodological or conceptual issues. For example, issues’ relating to quantitative versus qualitative studies, issues emerging from the literature review or philosophical approaches taken towards the research. Participants in the final stages of study may also choose to present an aspect of their research findings.

Participants wishing to present are required to submit a 750 word abstract to

Deborah Timmermans at Deborah.timmermans@... no later than

Friday 29 May 2009. To assist the organisers, when submitting abstracts please confirm what ‘focus’ the presentation will take. Authors will be notified of the acceptance of their abstract by Friday 5 June 2009.  Further details and programme will be available shortly at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ttri/

Submission of the full papers to be presented at the conference should be no later than Friday 5 June 2009. Full papers should be no more than 4000 words in length, including references.

All papers to be presented at the conference will be published on the TTRI website and on a CD which will be distributed to attendees during the event. We are also pleased to confirm that The Institute of Travel and Tourism (http://www.itt.co.uk) will once again, be awarding a prize for the Best PhD Student Presentation at the conference. Recipients of this prestigious award will subsequently be invited to receive their award at a presentation to be held at the House of Commons on 23 July 2009.

Conference Rationale

2009 marks the hundredth anniversary of the formal designation of the Costa Brava, a title and destination region that has become synonomous with the emergence and growth of ‘mass’ tourism over the past century. Tourism to this coastal region of Catalunya has boomed during this period and has transformed the nature and fortunes of communities and towns that have become established as tourist destinations serving both international and domestic visitor markets. However, the region today faces many challenges including maintaining tourist markets against competing destinations alongside environmental concerns. The recent rapid growth and decline of property markets and second home, expatriate communities is a further key concern for professional destination managers, policy makers and researchers alike.

This conference is therefore extremely timely in its aim of bringing together researchers who share interests in coastal and resort destination policy, planning and management in relation to culture(s) and histories of tourism.

These research areas are also clearly relevant to professionals and policy makers in destination management and the conference will provide a unique opportunity for researchers to share leading edge ideas, innovations and critical thinking with the professional destination manager participants at the European Union of Tourist Officers (EUTO) Study Visit to Catalunya which coincides with the conference. There will also be opportunities for delegates to participate in parts of the EUTO programme.

Culture(s), histories and heritage, tangible and intangible are at the heart of the visitor experience of coastal destinations. At the level of policy making and planning, the importance of a resort’s unique and distinctive cultural attributes is commonly articulated and celebrated, at least rhetorically. The management of cultural and heritage assets for tourism is also a critical issue for destinations.

Inter-disciplinary research at the interface of the complex linkages between these sectors and professional interests has much to contribute to terms of critical, reflective debate on key issues affecting the relationships between culture, history, heritage and tourism at the coastal destination level.

Research in destination policy, planning and management also explores the competitive opportunities and pressures associated with the emergence of new and diverse international tourist markets. Such research makes a critical contribution in the development of creative and sustainable strategies for the culture, heritage and tourism sectors in destinations.

Conference Themes

The conference welcomes proposals for papers that address the development of tourism in coastal regions and resorts and to Catalunya and the Costa Brava in particular. Proposals might, for example address:

  • Tourism and Catalan identity - tensions between the standard international offer and the marketing of the 'local' and regional or 'nation without a state'

  • Representing the Costa Brava: changing images over time, and the creation, marketing and modification of a 'brand'

  • Tourism and the Catalan language - problem or asset?

  • The labour force in Catalan tourism: Catalans and 'others'
  • Tourist markets to Catalunya and the (formal and informal) organisation of private and public space: e.g. hotels, beaches, squares

  • Issues surrounding second home ownership, property markets and ‘new’ resident communities in the Costa Brava

The conference organisers also welcome proposals for papers that address theoretical and applied issues and themes relating to destination management in coastal contexts from Europe and beyond. Such themes include:

  • Creative uses of cultural, historical and heritage resources for tourism in coastal settings

  • Cultural events and festivals as animators of coastal resorts

  • Transnational approaches to and conceptions of destination policy and planning in coastal contexts

  • Community participation in coastal resort development

  • Building sustainable partnerships and stakeholder relationships between tourism, culture and heritage in coastal destinations

  • Competitive (dis)advantage, new tourist markets and coastal destinations

  • New and emerging technologies in coastal destination representation and marketing

  • Coastal destination image and branding

If you wish to submit a paper proposal, please send a 300-word abstract with full address and institutional affiliation details as an electronic file to Dr. Philip Long p.e.long@...

The deadline for the reception of abstracts is 31st of July 2009

PhD Networking Conference

Exploring Tourism III: Issues in PhD Research

Christel DeHaan Travel & Tourism Research Institute

University of Nottingham Business School

Wednesday 1st-Thursday 2nd July 2009

To ensure this conference is even more inclusive we would like to invite students to present at a poster session.  This poster session will provide an excellent opportunity for conference delegates to present their research/abstract in an alternative format.  We encourage students to attend and make a presentation.

Conference delegates will be able to review the poster presentations during the networking breaks on both days.  Presenters should make themselves available during the breaks so that other delegates can ask questions and make comments.

Poster Requirements for PhD Networking Conference 1-2 July 2009

Presenters must provide their own display materials and are encouraged to provide handouts (to be placed along with the poster) for participants if appropriate. A poster board will be provided, as well as appropriate supplies to attach the poster materials onto the board.

On the board, the presenter will attach the following pieces of information:

1.      Presentation title

2.      Presenters’ name, title, place of study

3.      Description of the project/research work

4.      Photos, tables, illustrations, etc. that communicate the results of the project/research

All the text on the posters should be readable from a reasonable distance (1-1.5m) and the font sizes should be larger than 40 pt.  Presenters are encouraged to make their posters visually appealing but they should be simple enough so that the content of the presentation will be given appropriate focus. Where possible, data to be presented through visual representations (i.e. figures, graphs, photos, and illustrations).

Please review the following recommendations when preparing your poster:

·       Minimize long text passages and excessive explanations

·       Use simple, jargon-free statements

·       Use relevant pictures, tables, graphs and figures that illustrate your points

·       Use colours effectively as an organising tool or to highlight specific parts

·       Do not overflow your poster with colours

·       Make sure to use the font type(s) and size(s) that are easy to read

·       Do not overwhelm the viewer with excessive amounts of information; rather, construct a poster display that enhances conversation

·       If additional information (references, websites, background information, etc.) is available, make a handout

·       Posters should look as professional as your professional research

Deadlines

Poster presentation applications currently open until 19 June 2009.
