First International Conference on
Emerging Research Paradigms in Business and Social Sciences

22-24 November 2011
Venue: Hotel Pullman Dubai Mall of the Emirates

The objective of this conference is to provide an opportunity for academics to discuss new concepts, progressive methodologies, embryonic approaches and innovative practices within the world of business and the wider social environment. Given that social enquiry is still a maturing field of educational study within this region, it is crucial that business systems, processes and structures are considered in conjunction with contributions from such contemporary fields of social enquiry as media studies, psychology, sociology and tourism education. This is indeed pertinent for understanding service sector economies and societies, as well as comprehending the future role of education as a strategy and contributor to a sustainable learning culture and environment.

Middlesex University Dubai will hold its First International Conference on Emerging Research Paradigms in Business and Social Sciences (ERPBSS) from 22-24 November, 2011 in Dubai, UAE.

The Conference includes 6 main tracks

1.     Business and Management

2.     Education

3.     Psychology and Sociology

4.     Media Studies

5.     Tourism and Hospitality

6.     Information and Knowledge Management

Full details can be found at the conference website: http://www.mdx.ac/conference/

Tourism and Hospitality Track CFP

mdx

The tourism and hospitality track of this conference aims to examine emerging paradigms and innovative practices within the broader tourism and hospitality field. We are seeking papers that employ research methods and/or engage theoretically with the subject area. The objective is to present work that is transformative and which embraces serious intellectual discussion. Scholarly endeavour that unearths nascent areas of academic study, or progressively questions existing paradigms and epistemological applications will be most welcome. This track will thus attempt to encourage alternative approaches within tourism and hospitality studies rather
than reproducing well-established empirical models and conceptual applications. The overall aim of this track is to present a new agenda for future research and theoretical exposition.

Chairs: Dr. Cody Morris Paris and Ms Lulu Baddar
Co-ordinator: Dr. Marcus L. Stephenson

Although we are open to any submission that is aligned with the goals of the conference and this track, we do encourage submissions relating to the following themes:

  • Tourism development, policy and planning (including community development)
  • Tourism, citizenship and mobility: the rights and responsibilities of tourists
  • Tourism and humanitarianism: pro-poor tourism, social justice and sustainability
  • Place making and place branding
  • Medical / health tourism and well-being
  • Islamic hospitality and tourism
  • Hospitality environment: trends, new concepts, developments and initiatives
  • Hospitality institutions: organisational cultures, workforce issues and human capital, and the changing workplace environment
  • Advancements in information technology in the tourism and hospitality industries
  • Tourism and the cultural industries: contributions from the social sciences
  • Sport and activity tourism: impacts, challenges, and future developments
  • Festival and event industries: impacts, planning, implementation and innovation

KEY NOTE SPEAKER IN BUSINESS

Prof
essor Peter Checkland
Lancaster University,
Lancaster, UK.

Peter Checkland gained a first in chemistry at Oxford in the 1950s. He joined ICI when it was developing a new industry: making synthetic fibres from nylon and polyester polymers. Working first as a technologist then as a manager, Peter remained with ICI for fifteen years. When he left to start a second career in university teaching and research, he was manager of a 100-strong research and development group.
Joining the postgraduate Department of Systems Engineering at Lancaster University, Peter Checkland led what became a thirty-year programme of action research in organizations outside the university. Initially the research theme was to examine the possibility of using the well-developed methods of systems engineering in management problem situations rather than in the technically defined problem situations in which methods had been refined. This attempt at transfer failed, and the action research moved in a different direction. The work finally established Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) as an approach to tackling the multi-faceted problems which managers face; in doing this, it also established the now well-recognized distinction between 'hard' and 'soft' systems thinking. SSM is now taught and used around the world. Its development through action research is described in many papers and in five books: Systems Thinking, Systems Practice (1981); Soft Systems Methodology in Action (with J. Scholes, 1990); Systems, Information and Information Systems (with Sue Holwell, 1998) SSM; A 30-Year Retrospective (1999); and Learning for Action (with John Poulter, 2006).

Peter Checkland's work has been recognized in a number of awards: he holds honorary doctorates from City University, the Open University, Erasmus University (The Netherlands), and Prague University of Economics, also a Most Distinguished and Outstanding Contributor Award from the British Computer Society. He has been awarded the Gold Medal of the UK Systems Society, and the Beale Medal of the Operational Research Society. In 2009 he was made Honorary Distinguished Visiting Professor of South China Normal University.

CALL FOR SESSION PROPOSALS

The 10th Australian and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies (ANZALS) biennial conference is due to take place from the 6th to the 8th of December 2011 in Dunedin, New Zealand. In order to democratise the conference and to develop synergises across presentations the conference organising committee invites proposals from anyone who is interested in convening and chairing a themed session/s at the conference. Proposals should include a title for the session/s, identify the number of sessions being proposed, and describe the theme of the session/s and its rationale in no more than 350 words. A maximum of two sessions will be available to each theme and each session should consist of four papers. The responsibilities of themed session/s conveners include populating their session/s through a call for abstracts, ensuring the quality of submitted abstracts, and forwarding completed session details to the conference organising committee. Proposals should be forwarded to Diana Evans (diana.evans@...) by the 26th of November. Acceptance of sessions will be confirmed by the 10th of January, 2011

Alongside the themed sessions the conference organising committee will be making a general call for abstracts for papers in the next few months to ensure everyone who wishes to come and present at the conference has the opportunity to do so and is incorporated in the conference in a way that maximises the benefits to all conference participants.

“Cruise tourism: location dynamics and development issues”.

The objective of this special issue is to present an overview of the cruise industry

worldwide, to study the spatial and economic logic, and analyze the issues for the

regions. Beyond the picture postcard landscapes which depict the cruise tourism,

emphasis should be placed on the development issues surrounding this growing

economic sector, to analyze recent developments in cruise routes and to identify typical

places of the cruise.

A cruise, which was long reserved for the elite who had time and money, was opened

up to a mass clientele through commercial offerings targeting middle and upper classes

residing in rich countries and some emerging countries. This development was

accompanied by gigantic new ships, a rationalization of routes, and a choice of stops

with cost optimization, in tune with the increasingly mobile sources of capital. The

product "cruising" has changed dramatically in the space of two decades, where now the

ship itself becomes the "destination" and the primary attraction of the tourism product.

All these issues should be analyzed to assess the extent of changes in the cruise industry

and renewed challenges to the host territories.

The cruise industry, controlled by a few powerful owners, has entered a new phase of

economic realities that imply a spatial restructuring and a new spatial planning of the

cruise. Regional approaches can researchers to highlight the location dynamics of this

industry, the deployment of the cruise circuits, that characterize the different seasons,

worldwide.

More generally, cruise tourism is a field of study, with valuable lessons, for

understanding of the development of tourism and the spatial logic underlies the

development tourism strategies generally.

The thematic priority:

1 / The cruise industry worldwide and regional approaches (Mediterranean cruise,

Caribbean cruise, Pacific cruise, cruise in southern waters).

2 / Strategic nodes: ports and associated facilities.

3 / Life on board

4 / Economic issues in the cruise industry

5 / The selling of the ship board experience as a "destination".

6 /Conceptions of the cruise world throughout the world.

The journal will accept original contributions in English, French and Spanish.

Subject: 2011 NERR Training Workshops

All, Please spread the word regarding our NEW TRAINING WORKSHOPS.....Thanks, Tom

Colleagues,

The 2011 Northeast Recreation Research (NERR) Symposium will be offering two NEW
Training Workshops. The new training workshops are intended to appeal to a
diverse audience (Managers/Professional, Faculty and Students). The training
workshops will last three hours each and will run in conjunction with the
conference. Please find below information on the training workshops and how you
can register for the training workshops and the NERR Symposium.

Training Workshops (NEW to NERR) See Information below on NEW Training Sessions
#1 - Communicating Recreation Research Findings to Non-Technical Audiences
#2- Engaging Communities through Sustainable Recreation: Methods and Processes
for Public Land Managers

Training Workshop #1
Communicating Recreation Research Findings to Non-Technical Audiences:

Instructor:
Jerry J. Vaske, Human Dimensions of Natural Resources, Colorado State University
Description: A primary goal of recreation research is to provide information
that can inform and improve decision–making. The Potential for Conflict Index
(PCI) and associated graphical display were developed to facilitate
understanding and applicability of research findings to managerial concerns and
to non-technical audiences. The approach requires little statistical training to
understand results, minimizes effort required to process information, and
improves comprehension. This workshop will: (a) introduce the second generation
of the PCI (PCI2), and (b) provide attendees with practical hands-on experience
in calculating, graphing and comparing PCI2 values.
Requirements: Attendees will be expected to have their own laptop computers
with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint software.

Training Workshop #2

Engaging Communities through Sustainable Recreation: Methods and Processes for
Public Land Managers
Instructor: Laurie Thorpe, US Forest Service Enterprise Team Leader
Description: Land managers have identified a need to involve stakeholders in
attempting to develop a model of sustainability. Sustainability may be
achieved when the appropriate balance is found regarding economic, social and
biological variables. The USFS Sustainable Recreation model will be explained
through the use of case studies on various US National Forest settings. These
case studies will focus on stakeholder engagement, the identification of values
and issues through real-time surveying, and expected outcomes.

To register for one or both of the workshops, you must register for BOTH the
NERR Symposium and the Workshop(s).

To Register for the Workshops:

         - Send Training Workshop Registration (Name, Agency, Address,

Dear colleagues

Due to requests we extended the submission deadline for abstracts for the conference below until Friday 17 December 2010.

On the Surface: The Heritage of Mines and Mining

14-16 April 2011, Innsbruck, Austria

From pre-historic times to the present, the Earth has been mined for a vast variety of minerals and geological materials. The metals and stones extracted from under the earth’s surface have defined historical periods, helped to create towns and cities, stimulated economies, patterned international trade routes, been at the centre of conflicts, have shaped communities and have permeated a great deal of social and cultural life. From simple holes in the ground to vast industrial underground and overground complexes, and from coal to diamonds, mining has shaped landscapes and lives.

When resources run out, or when the costs of extraction have become prohibitive, mines close and we are left not only with the physical structures of mining but with extensive social, cultural and environmental legacies. Within the developed world, the transition from productive to consumptive economies continues to raise questions not only about how we deal with the material remains of mining, but with the processes of social and economic change and with more intangible notions of collective memory forged in human activities underground.

The focus of this conference is upon the heritage of mining and the extractive industries; the physical sites and the social legacies left on the Earth’s surface. Some former mines, mining landscapes and communities have gained heritage status and have become popular tourist attractions while others lie abandoned as pertinent and problematic markers of a changed world. This international, multidisciplinary conference seeks to critically examine the powerful and on-going fascination with mining and how mining heritage now plays an important role in wider agendas of economic and cultural development.

The Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change, Leeds Metropolitan University UK, in partnership with the Department of History and European Ethnology, University of Innsbruck, Austria, welcome abstracts from a variety of disciplines and fields including: architecture, art history, history, sociology, anthropology, ethnology, cultural studies, geography, tourism studies, museum studies, archaeology, ethnology, linguistics and economics. Indicative themes of interest to the Conference include:

·         Histories and ethnographies of former mining communities

·         Issues of preserving and managing mining heritage sites

·         Mining for tourists – visitor experiences of mining heritage

·         Interpreting and representing former mining activity

·         Legacies and linkages with the contemporary mining sector

·         Mining labour - mobilities and mining diaspora

·         Memory, identity and belonging in former mining communities

·         The languages of mining communities

Please submit a 300 word abstract including title and full contact details as an electronic file to ctcc@.... You may submit your abstract as soon as possible but no later than December 17th 2010.

The conference is of course also open to non-presenting delegates.

“Meanings, markets and magic”
2011 Adventure Conference

Dates: 15th/16th September 2011
Venue: School of Adventure Studies, Fort William

The School of Adventure Studies UHI in Fort William (http://www.lochaber.uhi.ac.uk/school-of-adventure-studies) and Lochaber Outdoor Learning Partnership are pleased to announce the 2011 Adventure Conference.

The conference aims to bring together leading academics, entrepreneurs and practitioners working in the outdoor adventure world to exchange ideas and, crucially, confront the issues emerging for this exciting and distinctive niche of leisure, tourism and education in the early 21st century. Although adventure recreation and tourism may still be a niche market, it is one of the fastest growing tourism sectors. The value of the adventure tourism market in Scotland alone has been estimated at up to £850 million annually by 2015.

Greater long-term personal wealth, an increased focus on healthy living and the broadening of established consumer markets are seen as key drivers for the future growth of the market. A desire for alternative, ‘edgy’ recreational and touristic experiences also represents an exciting growth area for emerging markets. Globally, adventure tourism therefore embodies a highly relevant and dynamic antidote to many people’s time-constrained and predominantly urban-framed lives.

This event is scheduled to take place on the 15th/16th September 2011 in Fort William, Scotland under the shadow of Ben Nevis. A number of field trips will be organised within the Highlands and Islands that will expose delegates to the exciting and diverse Scottish adventure tourism industry. This conference provides an opportunity for academics and practitioners to present their adventure tourism research, as well as being an excellent forum to network with others in the industry.

The two-day conference costs £295, including field trips and conference dinner (£250 for early bird bookings). Students are eligible for a reduced rate of £150.

Call for Papers
The conference organisers invite papers which explore the following broad themes. We would also welcome future research agendas for adventure travel and tourism.

•            Interdisciplinary research into adventurous leisure activities
•            Innovative, practical applications of adventure tourism theory
•            Advances in social science theory applied to adventure tourism and outdoor leisure
•            The commodification of adventure

•          Play: an antidote to the strictures of adult life

Submission Guidelines
Abstracts are invited for main sessional papers and workshop presentations. The abstract will be used by the reviewers as the basis for acceptance of the paper for presentation. It should therefore clearly state the objective of the presentation, the findings and their significance to the proceedings, and how they help advance our understanding of outdoor adventure. Time spent on producing a clear, well-written and concise abstract will enhance the chances of the paper being accepted by the review committee.

An extended 600-word abstract for peer review should be submitted via the conference website as a Word document (Arial 11 point font, 1.5 line spacing). It should be arranged under the following headings:

·         Title
·         Keywords
·         Introduction
·         Method
·         Findings/discussion
·         Conclusion
·         Key references

It is anticipated that selected papers will be considered for publication in special issues of international peer-reviewed journals.

Submissions should be made to steve.taylor@... by Friday 18 March 2011, and must also include a separate 150-word biography of the author (or authors).

Landscape and tourism: The dualistic relationship

Valmiera, Latvia, 21 - 23 September 2011

We are happy to announce that the first call for papers for the 2011 ATLAS annual conference is now available on the ATLAS website at www.atlas-euro.org!

Conference Theme

Landscapes vary. Landscape diversity creates unique local and national value for individuals, business, societies and governments alike. Somewhere too densely populated, somewhere else inhabited incredibly scarcely, and yet somewhere else exploited and abandoned; a sparsely inhabited paradise is an unreachable dream to many in urbanized society.

Yet, even when finding it, can a modern person fully enjoy it? Tourism is often a rarely realized opportunity to solve many of those contradictions. Images, expectations and reality, extensive use and protection, remoteness and urbanization - many of these dualistic issues are waiting to be discussed to find common understanding and solutions.

Sustainable tourism and environmental education:
A natural link

Kampala, Uganda, 6th- 8th June 2010

Please be informed that the deadline for submitting abstracts has been extended to the 1st of February 2011!

www.atlas-euro.org

ATLAS Africa, Makerere University, Kent State University, University of North Texas, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Nature Uganda, Nature Palace Foundation and Uganda Tourist Board invite you to the 7th ATLAS Africa conference in Kampala, Uganda 6th - 8th June 2011.

Nature degradation resulting from rapid population expansion and unsustainable livelihood strategies is alarming in developing countries. The need to protect what is left has attracted both local and international attention. Tourism has been advanced by conservation and development organizations, governments and the tourism industry as an approach through which conservation, development and livelihood issues can be addressed. Tourism is seen to come with new opportunities and benefits like: direct revenues, local area investments, jobs, extra incomes (e.g. by selling handcrafts, agricultural produce etc), and infrastructural development that can contribute to addressing livelihood problems hindering nature conservation.

Tourism from 1980s up to date is the fastest growing industry according to UNWTO, WTTC, and regional organizations'' statistics. The WSSD Rio summit, 1992 (Earth summit) and the subsequent WSSD Johannesburg summit in 2002 (Rio +10) focused on tourism among others as a strategy to achieve sustainable development. Agenda 21 on travel and tourism industry and later Sustainable Tourism- Eliminating Poverty (ST-EP) programme were formulated because of the dual role tourism often plays in nature conservation and in achieving global environmental awareness and education.

As a result of these initiatives, new forms of tourism emerged generically referred to as alternative tourism. Different forms of alternative tourism (responsible tourism, ecotourism, green tourism, ethic tourism, community based tourism and sustainable tourism) have grown in popularity. All emphasize environmental ethics and the role of environmental education in tourism management. Yet, the link between tourism, nature conservation and environmental education at the conceptual and / or theoretical level has remained blurred. Meanwhile, the practical use of tourism to achieve development, fight poverty and conserve nature has grown in importance. This explains the emphasis given to tourism in establishing protected areas world over. Although not always stressed in tourism management, environmental education through visitor interpretation, wildlife education centers, and community conservation programmes has become an important natural resource management tool. Generally, however, the lack of a theoretical or conceptual framework to link tourism, nature conservation and environmental education has made it difficult to develop sound policy and management procedures. No policy model apparently exists to combine the three. This is one of the concerns of this conference.

Submission of abstract

Abstracts (approximately 200-350 words) indicating background, practical implications and applications, methods and or data sources and indicative findings of the paper is excepted to be submitted for vetting and verification by scientific committee.

Abstracts should be submitted to ATLAS by using the abstract submission form on the ATLAS Africa conference website before December 30th 2010.

RGS/IBG Annual Conference, 31 Aug - 2 Sept 2011, London UK

Session Proposal: Art, Science and Geographical Imaginaries

Sponsored by Historical Geography Research Group

Convenors: Mrill Ingram, University of Arizona; Libby Straughan, Harriet Hawkins, Aberystwyth University.

The tragedy of modern institutional compartmentalization has been its dissolution of the epistemological linkages between the arts (and broader humanities) and the natural sciences. Yet, however disparate their imaginaries, science and art have shared histories that inaugurate many key geographical modes of enquiry. Geographical knowledges and practices today retain a lively sense of the connectedness of the arts and sciences, characterized by negotiation, mutual learning and symbiosis, and explorations of relational difference. In the context of thinking about the geographical imagination, this session poses broad questions about the discipline’s historic and ongoing relationships with art and science, their consequences for our ways of knowing and imagining the world, and for our understandings of the discipline and practice of geography.

We invite contributions that address the place of artistic and scientific endeavors in the historical production of geographical knowledge and that explore their place in contemporary imaginaries of geography as a discipline. Topics might include but are not confined to:

1)     Art/Science and the Making of a Modern-Day Geography

The co-mingling of art and science -- in the form of, for example, collaborations onboard ships in the Age of Exploration; the empirical and imaginary filling in of the blank spaces of ‘terra incognita’, celestial and subterranean worlds; and the 19th century rendering of nature and landscape in Von Humboldt’s cosmographies -- has been key to the emergence of a modern day geography. Indeed, the geographical project is often figured as one of synthesis. This may be worked through an imaginary of a disciplinary site where artistic and scientific endeavors engage around questions of bodies and environments, nature and society; or, it may be realized as part of a disciplinary genealogy that revolves, both pre and post Enlightenment, around the continuous working over of aesthetic and rational concerns.

How did this co-mingling of art/science emerge within particular political, economic and cultural contexts?

What imaginaries and practices animated and sustained such a geography?

How were relations between the empirical, the speculative and the imaginary articulated?

And, how, where and with what import did such a geography become institutionalized?

2) Today, in the spaces of the lab, the studio, and in the field we find collaborations between artists and sciences that articulate new ways of geographical knowing, but which also interrogate the history of geographical ways of knowing. For instance, geographers bring science and art together in the production of a range of outputs that have contributed to our world views, from visualizations, maps, GIS, data modeling and the graphics of field sketching and spatial science, to paintings and other art works.

How, where, and with what desires and anxieties have such collaborations emerged?

How has a history of geography been posited and re-negotiated?

What particular elements of the geographical imagination, and which concepts/techniques/figurations, are the focus of attention and why?

What modes of articulation are being used, and with what import?

3) Imagining Geographies/Disciplinary Imaginaries

Despite a history that combines art/science in a myriad of conceptual, methodological and presentational ways, there is nevertheless a marked compartmentalization of the discipline of geography. In consequence, a contemporary ‘drawing together’ of disparate areas of humanities, social and physical sciences combines elements that have considerable baggage accompanying them, such that they are identified variously as ‘factual,’ ‘measureable’ and ‘practical’, as well as  ‘creative,’ ‘innovative,’ and ‘speculative’.

How is this baggage negotiated as both a challenge and an opportunity in contemporary geographical accounts?

How does such work open up questions around the meaning and status of ‘data,’ the methods and practices of research and the status and value of outputs, both within and beyond the academy.

What expressive resources can be put to use in such efforts?

What are the implications of this contemporary co-mingling of art/science in the context of the rise of STEM and the threat to Arts and Humanities?

We invite papers, and other forms of contribution for this session, from geographers and artists, but also from a spectrum of interested parties including, but not limited to, historians of science and theorists of art and visual culture.

Please send abstracts/ expressions of interest to Mrill Ingram on mrilli@..., by Friday 11th February.

When submitting proposals please include the following information: 1) name; 2) institutional affiliation; 3) contact e-mail; 4) title of proposed paper; 5) abstract (no more than 250 words); and 6) any technical requirements (e.g. video, data projector, sound).

=

Landscape and tourism: The dualistic relationship

Valmiera, Latvia, 21 - 23 September 2011

The deadline for submitting abstract is February 1st 2011. You can submit your abstract by using the abstract submission form on the ATLAS homepage at www.atlas-euro.org.

Australian and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies Biennial Conference, 6 – 8th December 2011, Dunedin, New Zealand

Call for papers on: Sex and the sexual in leisure

Convenor: Associate Professor Neil Carr (University of Otago)

Leisure is an emerging academic discipline whose position in universities has been queried. It may be argued that at least partially as a result of this there has been a tendency amongst researchers in this discipline to align their work with the conventional moral high ground in order to legitimatise and increase the credibility of their work. In contrast, in more established disciplines, where there is potentially greater freedom to research beyond the borders of conventional morality, leisure experiences have often been shunned as areas of study. The result is that many morally ‘questionable’ leisure experiences and desires have been left in the dark, in both a social and research sense; unexplored by researchers.

‘Sex’, broadly defined as an act that leads to physical sexual stimulation and includes a variety of penetrative and non-penetrative acts and ‘sexual’ which although obviously related to sex, is not directly a physical act but refers to everything that, suggests, promises, and/or stimulates sex are two ‘dark’ issues that have generated very little research in leisure studies; especially relative to their arguably prominent position in the leisure experience. Where research has been conducted it has largely been situated within a framework of conventional morality. Yet there is evidence of a shift away from this position and to a recognition of the importance and value of conducting research on all aspects of sex and the sexual in the leisure environment. This is exemplified by the publication in 2010 of a book edited by Neil Carr and Yaniv Poria entitled Sex and the sexual during people’s leisure and tourism experiences.

Consequently, this session aims to build on the works in Carr and Poria’s book and the limited amount of research into sex in leisure and tourism experiences that has been published elsewhere to help bring issues of sex and the sexual in the leisure experience into the light of contemporary social and academic debate. As a result, abstracts for presentations are sought from researchers examining all aspects of sex, penetrative and non-penetrative, and the sexual in the leisure experience.

Potential themes for presentations include, but are not limited to:

  • The acceptance of public displays of sex and the sexual in the leisure environment
  • The lives of sex workers in the leisure experience
  • The role and experiences of the sexual in the experiences of leisure services employees
  • Cross-cultural concepts of sex and the sexual in the cultural melting pot of the leisure environment
  • The construction of places within the leisure environment through sex and the sexual
  • The construction of social identities and personal ‘selves’ within the leisure environment through sex and the sexual
  • The balance between freedom, morality, and safety of the self and the other within the context of sex in the leisure environment
  • The role of the Internet as a virtual space in the sexual experiences of people during their leisure

Abstracts (limited to 250 words) should be sent to Neil Carr (neil.carr@...), by 16th of May, 2011. Authors will be notified of acceptance of their abstract for presentation at the conference by 10th of June.

Please ensure that abstracts include all author names, institutions and an email contact for the lead author. Any special presentation equipment (e.g. slide projector) required should be noted in the email in which the abstract is submitted.

Australian and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies Biennial Conference, 6 – 8th December 2011, Dunedin, New Zealand

Call for papers on: Animals in the leisure experience

Convenor: Associate Professor Neil Carr (University of Otago)

Animals may be divided into wildlife, domesticated farm and working animal, pet, companion animal, and assistance animal categories. Increasingly, each of these types of creature plays a key role, both as attractions for human beings and consumers of experiences, in the construction and success of leisure environments. This increase in the importance of animals in the leisure experience is related to changing patterns in humans’ leisure desires, the changing relationship between humans and animals, and the evolution of concepts concerning the rights of animals.

While the position of wildlife and animals in zoos has begun to receive some attention from leisure and tourism studies the position of other segments of the animal population in leisure experiences remains largely under-studied. Furthermore, there is a need to integrate developing theories of animal rights within the framework of leisure experiences that have traditionally been designed to cater to the desires of the human population, utilising animals as products rather than sentient creatures with individual ‘rights’ and ‘needs’ in the process.

Consequently, this session aims to act as an arena for the development of understandings of the position of animals, both wild and domesticated, in leisure experiences and the rights of humans and animals in these experiences.

Potential themes for presentations include, but are not limited to:

  • Preservation of animals and their environments through leisure
  • The role of zoos as leisure attractions and centres of ecological education
  • The presence of domesticated, companion and assistance animals in leisure environments
  • The relation between gastronomic leisure and the quality of life of farm animals
  • The social, health, and economic costs and benefits of domestic animals in the leisure experience for humans
  • Hunting within the leisure experience; the rights of animals versus the needs of humans
  • The changing role of the farm animal in the context of rural tourism – from food product to tourist attraction
  • What happens when human pleasures and animal needs meet
  • Animals as leisure attractions, sources of food, companions, and cognizant individuals

Apologies for reposting – this time we have pasted the call into the message.

Journal of Heritage Tourism

Special Issue: Heritage Tourism in the Caribbean

Guest Editors: Dr. Leslie-Ann Jordan and Professor Lee Jolliffe, University of the West Indies

Introduction

The Caribbean has immense cultural, natural and built heritage tourism assets that have been molded by its history of slavery, colonialism and the plantation economy.  Mather and Todd’s (1993:139) comments are still true today as the Caribbean’s variety is still regarded as “…one of its major selling points: its people, who are a mix of races; its different languages; its architecture and fortifications arising from its colonial past; its variety of religions ranging from Christianity to Hinduism to voodoo; its varied topography, from flat sand islands of the Bahamas to the lush tropical mountains of St. Lucia; its cuisine, ceremonies and traditions”.   In the wake of increasing competition from emerging destinations, many Caribbean destinations have realized that their future tourism potential is almost solely based on the utilisation of this rich heritage.  Their plans to harness these assets have been riddled with as many challenges as success stories.  The purpose of this special issue is to share and discuss some of the key issues facing heritage tourism in the Caribbean.

Subject Coverage

This special issue on heritage tourism in the Caribbean is designed to cover a range of issues surrounding the natural, cultural, built, urban and colonial heritage of the Caribbean region including, but not limited too, the following:

-          Tourism-heritage nexus

-          Trends in policy developments for heritage tourism

-          Regulatory and policy environment

-          Development of the heritage tourism product

-          Marketing the heritage tourism product

-          Evolution of heritage tourism markets and products in the region

-          Impact analysis and assessment of heritage tourism – economic, socio-cultural, environmental, political

-          Authenticity and cultural dependency

-          Sustainable heritage development

-          Conservation and preservation

-          Community interest, involvement and participation

-          World Heritage Convention/World Heritage Sites – journey from ‘tentative listing’ to being ‘inscribed’

-          Institutional arrangements – national, regional and international

-          Impact of technology

-          Issues in the interpretation of contested heritage

-          The role of museums and historic sites in heritage tourism in the region

-          The politics of heritage

In addition to submissions from/about the Anglophone Caribbean, we welcome submissions from/about the French, Spanish and Dutch speaking Caribbean islands.

JOURNAL INFORMATION

The Journal of Heritage Tourism is a peer-reviewed, international transdisciplinary journal, edited by Professor Dallen J. Timothy, with a distinguished international editorial board. JHT focuses on exploring the many facets of one of the most notable and widespread types of tourism. During the past 20 years, the study of tourism has become highly fragmented and specialised into various theme areas, or concentrations. Within this context, heritage tourism is one of the most commonly investigated forms of tourism, and thousands of scholars and industry workers are involved in researching its dynamics and concepts. JHT seeks to examine critically all aspects of culture, heritage and tourism.
