If I were to guess, it's probably just a matter of indexing, and it'll
show up in a day or two.
I know this isn't useful info, but I wanted to post to the Yahoo group
:)

I checked the group's settings. It is correctly setup..."Listing

I guess this means rubyham is now an offical user group!
I will promote it online...

I've added our lunch to the calendar: 11:45 am on Thursday. I called

Greetings All,
I'm honestly not in Birmingham, sorry, Birmingham was the closest Ruby
Group I could find. I'm actually from Mississippi. But I'm very
interested in Ruby, and more specifically, Rails.
So are there any "rules" to being a member of this group? Oh yeah,
I've never been in a Yahoo Group before, so if I sound like I don't
know exactly how it works, I don't. I'm just a guy wanting to learn
more and more about the programming language of personal choice.
Thanks for your time,
James
No rules whatsoever. We're in the infancy of creating the Birmingham
Alabama Ruby Users Group and welcome all.
What is your current ruby status? What part of Missip are you from?

Currently I live outside of Hattiesburg, I work for a small software company ( http://www.graycosystems.com ). The only real ruby experience I have is what I've done in the comfort of my own home. I picked it up as a hobby, and later a friend showed me Rails, since my focus in school was web development. I am by no means an expert at either, and quite honestly a true newbie in my personal opinion.
But I love a challenge, and I love learning how to make things work.
So how often are meetings going to be planned? And will there be any at all on weekends? My week days are normally shot, since I work all day.
Thanks for the reply, look forward to being a part of the group....

Are you programming at work or do you have another job? My ruby
experience is not all that stellar either. Most of my background is
in java, particularly web based programs.

Great rates starting at 1¢/min.

I vote we have at least once monthly weekend meetings to facilitate that sort of thing. AtlRug had a Saturday thing one time and it was really beneficial overall, even if mostly because it got me more involved in talking to some other programmers and having people to make fun of my bad code at times...
I'm involved in a startup that is built around a Rails app I'm developing. I maintain that that should be the status of every Rails developer I know worth his salt, especially given the investment 'huggability' tech is starting to have again. :) Plus, the world would be cooler. But that's neither here nor there, I suppose. Come to think of it, I have absolutely no idea where that is.

I do very little programming actually. I'm fresh out of college, and the first chance I was able to take a programming job I took it. Unfortunately that programming is mostly mundane tasks, for instance, for one of our biggest projects, I'm in charge of handling the installer for it. Nothing much at all, but other than that, I do simple grunt testing and documentation. Every now and then I do some coding, but so far not much.
On the side I do some freelance web jobs, but nothing outstanding. But I hope to eventually sale my skills as a Rails developer.
With all that said, I now feel like the Newbie of the group.... So just call me "the Runt" of the group. If anyone has any words of wisdom or general advise for me, I am more than happy to read them.
On a side note, how many of the group are java developers? I recently won first place at our PBL State competition for java programming. I'll be
going to the Nationals this summer to compete again. I at one time had a huge interest in java, but had no real guidance other than what google would tell me. I find it to be a fun language, but I got alot of criticism from all the c/c++ guys I know.
Again, thanks for any future advice I'm sure to recieve....

Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. It's not radically different. Just radically better.
I have created a database in this group to record places where this
group is promoted. If we ever move away from yahoo groups, we can use
this information to update those links.
James, have you checked into the new orleans group. If you're from
Hattiesburg, that might be another source to get/share inspiration and
knowledge and a little closer as well.
Does anyone have any knowledge of the north alabama group? I noticed
them when I was checking into the backlinks that Greg posted. I'm
thinking that maybe once a quarter we might could join forces midway.
No, I honestly had no idea there was one in New Orleans, but I'll be sure to check into it.

Something the Atlanta group doesn't have, but perhaps should, is a
http://www.meetup.com group. I think it would be a good idea, but
perhaps you all can check it out and if you like it use it, and maybe
Atlanta will learn from your experience and also go for it.

Looks like gotomeeting is the most cost effective and easiest
solution. However, with it being windows only, it limits our scope.
Let me know if you find other options.
Kevin
looks like www.glance.net provides a linux/mac friendly version. has anyone ever used it?

What would be the most beneficial project for you?
o dsl/rails interface to greg's backup program
o dsl in ruby to generate code for topcoder contest
o authentication plugin for rails

Gotomeeting looks good to try. It isn't clear how their pricing plan works.
Does everyone in the
meeting need to pay $49 a month? Or can one person pay the $49/mo and 10 people
participate?

I know the folks who created VNC are working on an open source solution for this type of functionality. You might want to check on the current status. You'll have to Google it, since I don't have the URL. Could save a few bucks if it's ready.

It looks like glance is just one-way communication. I don't think the remote users can control anything on the host machine.
We need a technology that allows the host to "give control" to the remote users.
Greg was right about glance. Looks like it does not allow true
collaboration. I think either remote assist or gotomeeting with me
meeting up with josh is probably the best option for now. I would like
to tend towards gotomeeting to record but we might be able to do the
same with something like wink.
I don't know that there is an official North Alabama group yet. I
mean, we staked out a page on the RubyGarden Wiki but nothing's come
of it yet.
Oh, hello, by the way. My name's Lyle Johnson and I live in Madison,
up near Huntsville. I've been a professional software developer for
the last 12 years or so, and first found out about Ruby back in late
2000. Almost all of my "paid for" work has been Java programming, or
other non-Ruby stuff.
I happened across your page on the Wiki when I went there this morning
to check out something else, but I hadn't heard of this group until
then. Have you announced the group on the mailing list (ruby-talk)?
I don't know that I'll be able to participate much with the Birmingham
group, but I would like to "lurk" here and see how things go. I
suspect that there are a lot of Ruby programmers, or at least folks
with some interest in Ruby, up in the Huntsville area, but I don't
know how to draw them out.
