We are looking for a smart, team-oriented programmer with a "Getting Things
Done" attitude to help us develop our technology and launch our business. We're
looking for someone who enjoys challenges and wants to be part of something big.
Skills required: Rails 2.2+, MySQL wizardry, mod_rails, understands
hosting/scaling production rails sites, HTML/CSS, JS (jquery), with knowledge of
ecommerce/payment gateway integration a plus. Compensation will be in the form
of a competitive cash and equity package.

Where others have tried and failed, two frustrated New York City renters think
they've solved the rental equation – no more Craigslist fake listings, no more
high commissions, no more unreliable brokers, just a quality apartment search
experience – and we're looking for a smart and motivated web developer to
contribute to the idea and vision, and be the lead on development. The Naked
Apartments business model is both blatantly obvious and never been done before.

Business startup is funded and about to hit the ground running. Well-connected,
ambitious - the good kind - founders have internet and financial backgrounds.

We are a small boutique consulting shop specializing in
Internet/Social networking applications. Quality of life and work
environment are as important as the work we put out. Our employees
and contractors feel excited, engaged, and supported. We are
interested in those that have a sense of both hard work and play. The
bulk of our work is done in a handful of the finer coffee shops in
Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

Our portfolio includes several custom CMS, ecommerce systems, andâ€"more
recentlyâ€"some Facebook applications.

More recently, we’ve added one of the larger, more ubiquitous
entertainment brands to our client list. For them we’re developing a
cutting edge social network platform, and, well, need more hands on
the project.

We are looking for Jr. Programmer/Mid-level programmers with a diverse
set of skills. Accountability and follow-through are valued over sheer
experience.

For the right candidate this is an exciting opportunity to grow with a
creative and burgeoning boutique shop. To start we are looking for a
full-time/part-time contractual arrangement. We intend to grow this
to a full-time staff position with benefits.

Please respond with a resume, and short cover letter giving a glimpse
of your personality. Include any links to existing work you've
completed in the past.

Requirements:
*3-5 Years experience programming. (Or recent college grad with
tech-degree).
*Ruby On Rails
*rspec
*little bit of .NET (it's okay if your shudder at this mention).
*HTML/CSS
*Javascript (Mootools, Prototype, Scriptaculous, etc.).
*Capistrano

Basically, if you don’t have direct experience with any of the
technologies, you should be able to dig in after just a few days of
ramp-up.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Urbis.com is a late stage start up. We need your RoR developer(s) to
help finish the product.

What
Urbis is the first time a community decides which writers should be
published and which should go back to the drawing board. We have an
active beta community of writers and major publishers ready to go (but
can't say much more). We will expand beyond writing to other major art
forms by end of year.

How
The Urbis "Creative Review Engine" balances reviews among members,
removes bias, factors credibility of judges, and weights ratings based
on credibility. In other words, there's bunch of numerical processing
on the back end--if this intimidates you, then this is not the project
for you.

We're looking for
Either
1. An individual who knows it all (RoR, Ajax, Java, CSS) and works
incredibly fast.
Or
2. A group of specialized individuals who aren't spreading themselves
too thin.

This is a fun, high profile project.

What we're giving
We have cash. We have options. We're open to a cash or cash/equity
deal. Both full time and contract should apply. Telecommuters can
apply, but we prefer folks in NYC.

Please send resumes and questions to steve at urbis dot com.

you care about these words.

Hi there,

I am SAM, an Iraqi refugee living in Lebanon at the moment; I have spent the
last 10 years of my life as a refugee registered with the UNHCR in Beirut. The
last 4 years, I have spent as an activist for peace and human rights (especially
refugees and asylum seekers) on the Internet; I'm also books author and ebooks
publisher. I have launched many campaigns to improve our situation as refugees
in Lebanon and hopefully bring more understanding to our problems worldwide. I
helped make many changes and improvements at the UNHCR office in Beirut; I used
the Internet as the field for my activities (you can read more about that in my
free ebook 'MY CAMPAIGNS'). All my ebooks are free and could be download from my
sites.

This is my newest campaign, it's about the illegal and humiliating actions of
the UNHCR, who using photos of refugees as banners and human-buttons to collect
money. This is an abuse of the dignity and humanity of the refugees and must
stop immediately and a clear public apology present by The United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees. My friends, I am talking about the pictures you can

Also you can read my new campaign 'Urgent, we need smile' here:

For more info about UNHCR and life of refugees you can read my free ebooks. I
invite you as fellow humans and members of the world community to support my

campaign is to support and improve the UNHCR http://www.unhcr.org especially

What I'd recommend is that anyone interested in certain topics in Rails should pose questions on the wiki.

I'll review them and whip up some info we can cover during the next meeting.

I probably also have some code I can open source or at least just share.

In general I encourage everyone to start using the wiki more. It needs some beefing up and I'd like to to have some solid assets that we can all learn from.

Yeah, we have had a lot of Ruby-centric talks, but I can see the
appeal of Rails talks too. If anybody wants to give Rails talks, let
me know please.

Well, there's no reason those invited speakers can't be part of our
end-of-the-month presentation-focused meeting. If anybody has ideas
on people they want to come and speak here, either locals or non-New
Yorkers who might be travelling our way, please feel free to let me
know, and maybe we can start inviting people more directly.

As for the hackfest slot: My two cents (and there was chat about this
on IRC) is that presentations only get you so far, and maybe
beginners need more hands-on teaching. I wonder if that's something
we could do at those meetings too. Mentorships or just one-on-one
sessions or whatever. Also, I think at one meeting a bunch of people
went through one of the Ruby Quizzes and found it a really useful
exercise.

Hey guys.

In my shameless attempt to spam this list, I'd like to see if anyone
happens to have, or know someone who has, some strong AJAX/JS chops.
This would be freelance work, for 1-3 months. Rails and Prototype/
Scriptaculous knowledge a major plus, HTML/CSS/Design on top of that
even better. Anyone interested please email me at work@....

Thanks!

Matt

Hey guys.

The only caveat with tomorrow's meeting is that we'll have to cut it a little short (relative to how long it usually lasts). Since it's V day and all, I'll have to have the place closed up, cleaned up, and locked by 9pm. Sound cool? That still gives us a healthy 2.5+ hours, plenty of time for a presentation and hacking.

Thanks.

Hey guys,

Next meeting is a week from today at 6pm at EastMedia.

I'm also putting some feelers out for seeing who has some solid
skills with C/C++, Ruby (non-Rails), and of course Rails. Any
experience with online security technologies (i.e. OpenID) would
help. I may be working on something soon so I'd like to see who is in
NY and might be available.

Thanks.

Hey all,

Just making sure everyone knows (I sure didn't) that the next meeting is on the
31st, not tonight :)

Sorry for helping the confusion by putting the wrong date into the wiki.

See you all next week!

Matt

Last week, a client asked me to find them some candidates with Ruby on
Rails development experience in the tri-state area. So far, I've
found 2 and they have interviewed both candidates.

I'd like to pitch more candidates to them, so if anyone is looking for
a full time position in NYC, shoot me your resume.

I really can't give you more info on the job b/c I don't have any.
The client; however, would be more than happy to answer all your
questions.

Thanks,
Beau Gould

My name is Beau Gould and I specialize in open source staffing I've
been getting a lot of requests for RoR developers in and around the NY
area, but I don't have many candidates in my database.

I was wondering if any of you are looking for work. I do both full
time and contract staffing. Sometimes the contract gigs are on-site
and sometimes they are telecommute.

I would like to have your resume on file so I can match skills to
specs. If you are interested, please send your resume and
hourly/salary reqs to beau@...

Thank you

Someone left a mouse here from the meeting. If you can identify it by
distinguishing marks or serial number, it is yours for a small ransom.

Subject: Call for help/comments on a gem project

Hi All,

Here's what I'm planning on working on tonight - if anyone else thinks
this is worth doing, I could definitely use some help...

("You're doing it all wrong" is perfectly valid help, as long as you
tell me how to do it right!)

In the spirit of the rake 'freeze_rails' and 'unfreeze_rails' tasks, I
will be working on implementing freeze_gem/unfreeze_gem.

== Why? ==

You want to use a gem in your rails application but you don't have
full 'gem install' access to either your local machine or your
eventual deployment machine.

== What? ==

freeze_gem will unpack the specified gem into
RAILS_ROOT/vendor/frozen_gems (unfreeze_gem removes it).

== How? ==

So far, what I've sketched out is:

Given usage: `freeze_gem GEMNAME` in RAILS_ROOT

1. Check to see if GEMNAME is installed locally

2. If yes, go to 3, else `gem install GEMNAME --install-dir=/tmp`, set
GEM_HOME to /tmp

3. `mkdir vendor/frozen_gems` if necessary, `cd vendor/frozen_gems`

4. `gem unpack GEMNAME`

== Loading Frozen Gems ==

Running freeze_gem also installs the 'frozen_gem_loader' plugin if
necessary. The frozen_gem_loader plugin is something like:

frozen_gem_loader/init.rb

		 unless Object.const_defined?(:Gem)
		  require 'rubygems'
		 end

		 Dir.glob("#{RAILS_ROOT}/vendor/frozen_gems/*") do |directory|
		   next if File.basename(directory)[0] == ?. || !File.directory?(directory)

		   if File.directory?("#{directory}/lib")
		     $LOAD_PATH.unshift "#{directory}/lib"
		   end

		   $LOAD_PATH.uniq!
		 end

== Some Complications ==

- Gem versions: there should really only be one version of any
particular gem frozen at any one time.
- Platform issues: it really only makes sense to freeze pure ruby
gems. Is it possible to determine if a gem is pure ruby or not?
- Dependencies: things get a lot more complicated if multiple
dependencies have to be installed and frozen.

Subject: Looking For Rails Developer(s)/Shop

Howdi nyc.Rubyists,

I'm looking for some serious ruby/rails developers for two gigs.

For the first one, the client requests a development "shop that will
be around 3 years from now, preferably near midtown." They're
building a custom CMS for a forthcoming high profile online magazine/
weblog community. They have some smart people on staff. And, of
course, they're on a tight deadline --a launch in November-- so the
want to start pronto.

The second one is for an interesting audio tour company. They have a
website and use a 3rd party ecommerce service/system for the purchase
and download of their softgoods. Unfortunately this situation is
producing serious nightmares, so they want to bring it all in house.
The other parts of their site includes some php which could either be
ported or could be left alone. They are on a tighter budget and
perhaps a single freelance developer would be more suited than the
midtown shop requested for the prior listed job.

For all the details, please email me!
