OK. I think I was misunderstanding the problem.
If I understand correctly (at last), you have a record with a field "age",
containing information on difference in dates (in one form or another).
You would like to search that field by allowing the user to specify
strings such as "5M" for 5 months, "2Y/J" for 2 years/jars etc.
For example, writing "> 5M" in the query form would search the file for
all records where the "age" was more than 5 months.
If that is correct then we are approaching the problem from the wrong
direction. Before I send you lots of irrelevant code, let me know if I've
now got the problem as it really is, and we can go from there.
