What do you guys think it means for Java?

Ellison called it (Java) Oracle's most important software acquisition ever,
particularly citing their middleware (WebLogic, OAS, now Glasfish) as their
fastest growing segment of their business. Thus, Entprise Java, JEE, will be in
great shape.

But what will happen to the JCP, client side Java, etc?

The rumor I saw on Twitter was that the JCP was going away regardless so it may be a moot point.

Out of all the major players I can think of I feel best about Oracle owning Sun.  They seem to come from similar mindsets.

The funny part is if this had happened back in 2000 the dotcom CTOs would have had a much easier job.  The  Weblogic and Oracle running on top of an E10K could have been purchased from one place!
They could have called it the trendy startup special.

Regards,
Daniel

I am not too excited about this development. Oracle is a huge corporation and I think Java, Netbeans, Mysql will only get more complex and out of the reach of the small developers. I will use Posgres for my next project and it will probably be my second Ruby On Rails project. I still think Java is a great language + VM and Java is a strong option for deploying projects - I am considering using JRuby. But I feel it's behind the curve in terms of innovation and it will only get more bogged down in the new business environment.

Flames welcome :)

Hello, all:

You may recall me mentioning an excellent resume book at last night's
meeting. It's "Land the Tech Job You Love" by Andy Lester:

The eBook is $16, and well worth it.

I asked a question at the last user group regarding differences in libraries
such as what do I get from JQuery that I don't get from other libraries. I still
havn't really compared them but I did come across these performance metrics
between the various libraries for each major browser. So atleast you can get a
sense of performacnce trade of. And yes, each library can have significant
performance hit as well as the browser it is ran on.

Last year Nick gave a presentation on REST and I recalled he was talking about a
binary protocol that compresses efficiently. Does any one remember the name of
it? I want to look into its capability, in particular if makes sense to use it
in conjunction with web services to reduce the size of payloads. Or if we can
use it in specialized cases.

Thanks

Nick Chalko is giving us a presentation on Google Web Toolkit. Nick is
our inside man for Google intelligence. For most of us, the web page is
the canvas that we draw our creative ideas onto every day. So I'm sure
tonight's discussion is sure to be both interesting and informative.

Sandwiches, desert, and sodas will be sponsored by TEKsystems, COMSYS,
and The Scheuble Group.

We have an O'Reilly's book to be raffled off too.

Hope to see you at the meeting!

Best regards,

My apologies.

I totally forgot I was presenting tonight.   ( I use GWT everyday at work, but I need to have something clean to present.)
I will hack something together on the train home tonight.

However, I will not be able to make it before 7:15 at the earliest.

R,
Nick

Thanks for the update Nick, I am sure the presentation will be worth the
wait.

I just got done speaking with Chris about this and he is hoping that if
someone else is familiar with GWT, that person could present/speak about
it to get us going until Nick arrives.

Any takers?
Thanks.

Early Bird ends Monday, November 2nd...Join us for the Premier Web Development/Design show - 2009 Rich Web Experience returning December 1-4th to Orlando!

The Rich Web Experience 2009 will cover the hot areas of interest in the web space today: JavaScript, Ajax frameworks, CSS, Flex, Design, security, and more. RWE 2009 will feature 5 parallel tracks, over 15 speakers, 50 technical sessions, panel discussions, and keynote presentations.  At RWE 2009 you will interact with industry experts, project leads, authors, and top developers. Front-end development practices continue to evolve at a frantic pace. RWE will help you stay up-to-speed with the latest tools, frameworks, usability, and development practices. Our speakers are open source leaders, project committers, published authors, and professional trainers. We are excited to make them available to you!

**COMPLIMENTARY One Day JavaScript/AjaxBoot Camp - $500 Value!  to be held on December 1st**
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview:
Programming in JavaScript is very different from classical object oriented languages. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn the underlying knowledge necessary to build typical web applications, with an emphasis on the differences between JavaScript and Java. Start by writing code for alert("Hello World") and then finally understand and leverage functional scope. There will be plenty of simple code-along examples to help get developers up to speed on this powerful, flexible language.

In the second half of the workshop, you will apply the skills learned, and build an AJAX RSS reader. This project will cover the gamut of AJAX features: DOM manipulation, CSS
property animation, a simple widget system, and building a connection to Yahoo's YQL Web Service.

Target Audience: Web Developers, beginner to intermediate

You have to register. Don't just show up. I don't think there is any fee for
attending and they have a continental breakfast.

Call Henry if you have any questions.

I am not sure if I can get away from the office that day or not, but I am going
to try.
Hi Robert,

It was a pleasure to speak with you today.  Here is a PDF if you want to forward.

I upgraded the security suite and the install program decided to uninstall Apache HTTPD along the way.

I needed to upgrade the HTTP server anyways, so I downloaded the current release of Apache and dealt with the configuration changes. It should be working...
