DOT Selects Members to Technical Pipeline Safety Standards Committee

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta today announced the selection of 10 individuals representing government, industry and the public to serve on the U.S. Department of Transportation's two committees dedicated to enhancing pipeline transportation safety.

The Technical Hazardous Liquid Pipeline Safety Standards Committee (THLPSSC) and Technical Pipeline Safety Standards Committee (TPSSC) advise the Department on the technical feasibility, reasonableness, cost effectiveness and practicability of proposed pipeline safety regulations.  Sponsored by the Department's Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA), the committees also serve as a peer review panel for pipeline safety regulations, and a public sounding board for other pipeline safety issues.

"The collaboration of government, public and private interests are an important first step to ensuring our regulations will achieve the highest level of safety," said RSPA Deputy Administrator Samuel G. Bonasso.

Each committee is composed of 15 members equally divided among three representative groups:  government, industry, and the general public.  Committee members are appointed to serve three-year terms.

The six new appointees to the THLPSSC are:

Government
Alex Alvardo, Minerals Management Service, New Orleans, LA

Public
Lois N. Epstein, Cook Inlet Keeper (re-appointment), Anchorage, AK
Lisa M. Parker, Agrium, U.S., Kena, AK
Paul S. Rothman, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Newark, NJ
Carl M Weimer, Pipeline Safety Trust, Bellingham, WA
Richard B. Kuprewicz, Accufacts, Inc., Redmond, WA

The four new appointees to the TPSSC are:

Government
Linda J. Kelly - Commissioner, Department of Public Utility Control, State of Connecticut (re-appointment), New Britain, CT

Jeff Hatch-Miller - Commissioner, Arizona Corporation Commission, State of Arizona, Phoenix, AZ
M. Glynn Blanton, Chief, Gas Pipeline Safety Commission, Tennessee Regulatory Authority, Nashville, TN

Public
Virginia Cooper, Floyd Unified Landowners Association, Floyd, VA

RSPA Associate Administrator for Pipeline Safety Stacey Gerard presides as executive director of each committee.

A full listing of the Department's pipeline safety advisory committee members can be found on the web at http://ops.dot.gov.
