Abstract: Many recent "mind reading" studies have appeared, predicting the stimulus from functional MRI data. From a few seconds of brain activity, we were able to predict the category of object a person was thinking of, even when we only trained the algorithm on other people. In a follow-up study, we learned a mapping between brain activity, and a very simple theory of word meaning: that the brain represents similarity between nouns by making use of the most common verbs which appear close to that noun, as measured in a trillion word corpus. The resulting model can predict the brain activity to novel words which were not used to fit the model with a high degree of accuracy.
