Hi:

This might seem off topic, but I've just downloaded the latest Beta of Sandvox
to see if my site improves. I currently have some smart Flash movie files on my
home-page, which play really well in every browser except Safari 4. Using
Firefox, you can click on and off any one of these, but in Safari 4 (I'm using
the Tiger version), some just don't play straight away. They will eventually if
you leave the page to sit there a while, but that's not the answer.

So what's with Safari 4? I'm trying to get the damn thing off my computer, but
without much look. One only has to Google Safari 4 problems, and there's quite
a few people out there that are very unhappy with it too.

Best wishes,

Barry

PS: My site is www.barryjwale.com

You can trash Safari4, then install Safari3 again:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Safari_3_2_1_for_Leopard

Do they have this option for Tiger?

Yes, they have:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Safari_3_2_1_for_Tiger
Success.

But surely that's an update. I've just tried it and it says that I have a newer
one installed. Yes, I know you said to trash it first, but this goes against
everything that is being said on the various site. Trashing Safari 4 first is
not the answer!

Sorry about that. So does this mean that Apple is preventing
reinstallation of Safari3?
I'll check this out.
It should be possible to restore Safari3 from a backup though. Do you
have a backup somewhere? TimeMachine?

No back up and no Time Machine ( I believe the latter is a Leopard thing?)

Thanks

The only safe way to uninstall Safari 4 is using the Uninstaller
included in the Safari 4 Download package. Try running the
uninstaller. If it works it will revert Safari back to v 3.2.1.

The uninstaller was only available with the Beta. It's not available now.

One more reason to be weary of new versions.
I'll check some more and come back to you when I found something.
Would it be possible to copy the app from someone who has Safari3, put
it on a disc and send it to you?

Can you drag Safari3 from your applications in TimeMachine backup?

I don't have Time Machine.

Just to confirm: I have Tiger 10.4.11 and running Safari Version 4.0 (4530.17)

Here's a possible solution.
Download Safari4 again and reinstall it. There is an uninstaller with
it. With this uninstaller you can uninstall Safari4 and with a good
copy of Safari3 (either from Apple or your TM backup) you should be
able to go back to Safari3.
Let me know if it works out.

OK, here's another go.

1. Download Pacifist and open the Safari 3.2.3.dmg
2. Look in the Resources tab and look for a file called Payload
3. Extract "Payload" to your desktop and unzip it, it won't show up as
zip but you should be able to unzip it. If not, press Enter and
add .zip to it and save it with the .zip extension.
4. After unzipping the "Payload" folder you'll need to replace the
files in the folders in the exact area on your system. So you navigate
to one of the folders and only erase what is in the "Payload" and
replace the "Payload" version of that file to where you erased it
from, and so on until all your "Payload" files have been put into the
system to their respective places.
5. Repair you disk permissions and reboot your machine.
6. Run Safari 3.2.3 installer and it should run without having to ask
you where it will be installed.
7. After the installer finishes, you'll need to reboot.
8. Enjoy, there's nothing wrong with 4 but I don't think it's quite
ready yet. For me it seems to be crashing from page to page. It looks
like some sort of memory problem. But 3.2.3 is working fine and has
been.

Re Tiger:
To me it looks like the Tiger version of the Safari 3.2.3 package has
the application listed directly in the Package Contents tab of
Pacifist unlike the leopard version. This is good for those who wish
to completely downgrade from Safari 4 and leave no trace of it on
their machines. Those wishing to do this should be able to select the
package in Pacifist and click the install button in the toolbar. This
will replace the Safari 4 files in the /System/Library and the /usr
directory with the Safari 3 versions. If you want to run side by side
installs, you simply select Safari.app from the Applications directory
in the Package Contents tab and click extract, placing the application
wherever you like. When that is finished, just follow the directions
from earlier in this thread to modify the Info.plist file and correct
the preferences issue.

More for Tiger:
Thanks for all the info here. I'm using Tiger so the Pacifist process
was a lot simpler for me. I had manually deleted all files I could
find related to Safari 4, but still couldn't install the older
version. Extracted/installed 'Safari.app' using Pacificist and now I'm
back in 3.2.3 heaven.

I'm using Tiger and it was very easy to do the update using Pacifist.
After opening Safari 3.2.3 in Pacifist all I had to do was select the
Package Contents of 3.2.3 under the Pacifist "Package Contents" tab
and then click install in Pacifist. I was not interested in a side by
side with S4. S4 is gone.

Thanks for all this info - wow! such a lot to do in order to uninstall. If
think it's best that I wait a while before trying something like this - I'd hate
to make the problem worse.

Barry,

First of all I like your video work.  I would like to get into video in the USA.  I need to pick up a camera, and start honing my craft.  I'm a still guy from back in the day.

I have the same problem with 10.4.11 and Safari 4.  I just upgraded to Safari 4.0.2 (Version 4.0.2 (4530.19)). with the hope of resolving the issue, but no luck.  I was on the phone with Apple for an hour before they admitted they were having a problem with 4.0.  They told me to hang in there till they came up with a fix.

In my case I am getting a message with another web authoring software, that Flash is not installed - Please click here to install the Flash player to see this website correctly.  Flash is installed correctly of course as tested by the Adobe site - tested with Apple on the line.

I asked Apple about reverting to an old version of Safari, and was told to re-install my OS in order to get back to Safari 3.x.  Of course, this sounds like a lame idea to me, so I'm not going to do that.

I'm using Firefox in the meantime with no problems at all.

Thanks so much for this response - now I know I'm not going mad and others are
in a similar situation. I guess that's the real answer: wait for Apple to come
up with a fix!

With regards to the problem you're having with Flash, it's all gobbledegook to
me. It took many days of help from folk on this site to show me the way to do
this and in the end I found a Flash ace who has created a straight forward flash
programme to use.

But if you need any help, I think the Q&A are still somewhere on this archive
from last year ( I hope)

All the best

Barry,
I'm not having problems with Flash or implementing Flash.  I'm just having problems with Safari 4 integrating the way it should with Flash.

It looks like the latest version of Firefox was developed with the mac in mind. The colour rendering now is closer to what you have in Safari (somewhat lighter than in Explorer) and the shadows you add to images in iWeb can now be seen in Firefox as well (with this little difference that the shadows in Safari are shadows of the image or text, and in Firefox they are shadows of the square of rectangle containing the image or text).
You can see the difference here:

Hetty

Greetings!

Seems that if you're not running Leopard, an earlier version of Safari might be best for you.

With Leopard, Safari 4 is a star!

I currently have some smart Flash movie files on my home-page, which play really well in every browser except Safari 4. Using Firefox, you can click on and off any one of these, but in Safari 4 (I'm using the Tiger version), some just don't play straight away. They will eventually if you leave the page to sit there a while, but that's not the answer.

So what's with Safari 4? I'm trying to get the damn thing off my computer, but without much look. One only has to Google Safari 4 problems, and there's quite a few people out there that are very unhappy with it too.

Best wishes,

Barry

No issues at all with Sandvox in Leopard?
Problem is I don't want a star, no bling or iCandy, but an efficient,
quick browser. And when I had Safari4 it was ever so slooooowwwww and
some pages (Apple pages!) didn't even load.

As far as I know, Safari 4 is no more a beta.

Did you install the last Safari 4 version (i.e. 4.0.2) ?

Just trying that now. I've been clicking update everyday, but there's been
nothing. Fingers crossed this may be better

Thanks

Just tried the newer version - still the same problem.

Looks like Firefox from now on - great shame!

Hi Barry,

I just visited your site in Safari 4 and then in Firefox 3.5. Both sites came up rather quickly but Safari 4 actually came up a bit faster.

All of the movies played just perfectly in both browsers and I did not see any discrepancy between the two.

Could you be more specific as to what exactly you are expecting Safari 4 to do that Firefox is?

Also, you might consider that by you removing Safari 4 from your system will not correct any problems that visitors to your site might have if they are using Safari 4.

This is just my opinion, but it seems to me that it would better serve your customers to fix the content so that it does right in Safari 4 rather than try to change your browser to Safari 3.2

But, I did test all of the movies on your home page and on your video page and they all played very nicely.

BTW ... You have done a great job on your site

Gary

Thanks Gary! At least if the site is working well on computers then perhaps
it's just a case of a problem my end. I shan't worry about this now and later
I'll invest in Leopard where hopefully this problem for me will not exist.

Thanks to everyone too for their feedback

Barry, your site looks great (isn't that the Night Breeze theme) and works just fine for me. I'm using an old iBook (933 mhz) running OS X 10.4.11 and Safari 4.0.2.

BTW, I really like the replacement banner graphic at the top.

Hi Gary:

Yes, it is the night Breeze theme, and thanks for the complement. Maybe there's
a problem with my computer, it's just that some of the videos of the front page
don't play immediately. If the page has been sitting there on my computer for a
while, then they do. It's odd. This doesn't happen with Firefox. I'm using a
3 year old MacBook Pro.
