SANSEVIERIA:

Phylum: Magnoliophyta
Subphylum: Spermatophytina
Infraphylum: Angiospermae
Class: Liliopsida
Subclass: Liliidae

Order: Asparagales
Suborder: Asteliineae
Family: Dracaenaceae
Subfamily: Nepetoideae
Tribe: Salvieae
Genus: Sansevieria (devil's tongue, after Raimondo di Sangro)

Some botanists place Sans. together with Agavaceae. The Swedish naturalist C.P. Thumberg got the plant from its discoverer, Vincenzo Petanga from Napels, who wanted to name the genus after P.A. Sanseverino, Duke of Chiaromonte and collectioner of rare plants in the south of Italy. However, because of linguistic problems, Thumberg erroneously named it Sansevieria, after Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of San Seviero, who was a military man and an inventor, and had nothing to do with plants.
The 60 species of Sansevieria are found in tropical and subtropical regions in Africa and Asia. Generally, they are desert-plants, and can tolerate drought and dry air, thus making them very suitable for the office and public buildings. However, they cannot stand long periods of cold. Most species have thick crawling rhizomes, although some develop stems. The mostly long leaves are stiff and juicy, and serve as a water-stock for periods of drought. Some species are cultured for their hemp-like fibers. The white or greenish flowers appear on long stalks in bunches, and sometimes are fragrant. The attraction of Sansevieria lies in the subtle design on the leaves, consisting of vague horizontal bands and stripes, and the differing color of the edge of the leaves.

Happy Gardening!!
