I normally take my photos on a digital SLR - which cost over 3 times the price of this little beauty, but I like to carry a camera around with me whenever possible (on a walking or bike trip) so lugging a huge SLR with all of its lenses isn't really feasible. OK so this Lumix isn't as versatile as an SLR - there are no out-and-out manual settings on it, but it does allow you to have some forms of override and its compactness, small weight and quality of lens make up for this.
The quality of the pictures I have taken on it so far - whether at 25mm or 300mm have been quite stunning. The full range of the zoom (12x) has been used to take photos of flora and fauna. If you WANT to you can even get it to zoom in further (up to 21.4 times - that's the equivalent of over 500mm lens - though the quality does suffer).

What a little stunner!! I am thrilled with this gorgeous camera, and still coming to grips with some of the finer points of the manual modes, but to be honest, I've got some really great shots using the Auto mode!!! The zoom is excellent, almost no quality loss on a real close-up, and the macro is very good, true and faithful. I love the idea of the viewfinder, though the lcd screen is so bright, I haven't had much cause to rely on it, whatever the conditions. Considerable battery savings by switching off the monitor. The only problem I've had is finding a suitable case...one with pockets for additional battery and memory card. I use an 8gb card, and the battery life is fantastic, so just a small niggle.

The first reviewer is very crtical of the picture quality for this product, however at ~£100 you get what you pay for. The amount of mpixels is not the only important factor- the size of the lens is a consideration, and this can clearly be seen from picture as not very large.
We wanted a camara for our 10 year old for 'snaps'. This fits the bill very well. The camera is turned on and off by sliding the cover on the front which is easy to do. (A down side when reviewing photo's as the lens is then exposed). There are multiple scene modes including manual, and a good table in the instruction leaflet which gives an overview of what is available in each setting. There is also a video function- quite simple in operation, not high quality output, but good enough to transfer to an MP3 player with video faclities to show short clips to friends.
For an experienced digital camera owner the menus and buttons are pretty well laid out and easy to use. May be not if you have large fingers or stiffness in the fingers but that will apply to many digital cameras.
The camera took grainy photo's in low light levels which were much improved by turning on the flash. It does not handle well images with high contrast-the high light areas are completley over exposed and burned out. In review mode the setting ISO, aparture and speed are displayed, and too slow a shutter speed explains some less than sharp pictures with time and experimentation it will most likely be possible to work out which scene modes work best.

To summarise my opinion of the camera: it's the perfect DSLR for a beginner. That's not just because this is priced at 'entry' level, it's because Nikon have developed this camera with the novice in mind. So often people buy SLRs and never move on from the automatic Program mode. This camera teaches you how to take control of the camera.
Switch the camera dial to "Guide" and three options appear on the 3" LCD screen. "Shoot", "View/Delete" and "Set up". The shoot guide includes three options - "Easy Operation", "Advanced Operation" and "Timers and Remote Control". Choosing one of the options then takes you to a further set of options with choices where the camera not only guides you through making the right settings but it also explains why. For example, in advanced operation you can choose to "Soften Backgrounds". The guide tells you about the Aperture-priority mode and then visually demonstrates what happens when you change the F number with a guidance note telling you to "Choose lower f-numbers to blur the background".
