There is the original entry for STS 130, NORAD No 36394 in the full
catalog tle which has the satelite symbol passing over America though,
so maybe I could have saved myself some trouble..?!

John,
I eventually got something happening for tracking the shuttle on my
PC. I`m wondering if I in fact have both lines of data, as though it`s
described as STS 130 (with some heiroglyphs in front) & NORAD No
36394, the graphic in the World Map never leaves the southern
hemisphere? I have "All" objects in Select Object, an elevation of 10,
All altitudes & All directions selected & none of the other boxes
checked.. The other two entries I have for this plan position the
satellite symbol directly over the north pole...I did what you said &
downloaded Microsoft Notepad which was just as frustrating as the
previous methods to begin with, but eventually I had all of Darwin`s
data highlighted, copied & pasted to a file in one of my folders on
the PC. There was more to it than simple copying & pasting though!
From there I managed to find the right file amongst the myriad of
similar ones I had there & used "Open File" in Sat Tracker to bring it
up. My GoSatWatch app on the iPod definitely has the shuttle passing
over America in it`s travels though?

Leo,
Thanks for the insight, I'm in ALT/AZ.

The reason I sync on
Polaris is because that's the only star I know(Just started using LXGPS
200GPS). I didn't know that Each sync erases the previous one I thought
all sync's where keep in memory. The thing that worries me is that after the
automatic two star alignment, I selcted a star from the database. It moves to
it's location and try's to find it, and allmost always it never shows on the
main scope. But if I look at thought the viewfinder it's not that far off my
cross hairs( so I adjust and syn each time. Whinch now truns out to be points
less since Each sync erases the previous one).

Any more insights would be greatly appreciated.

Just trying to bag my first satellite

Aging Thanks for the info
Jose

Hi Jose,

You have several questions about a scope far more advanced then my LX200
Classic. But I'll start the discussion with what I know and perhaps a LX200 GPS
owner will join in.

Once you finish your two star alignment (first step in your list) the scope
should be fairly well aligned. You did not mention if you are Polar aligned or
ALT/AZ, but either way an LX200 can do two star alignments.

Your syncing on Polaris concerns me. It is an odd star to sync on since most
objects one observes are not near Polaris. I don't believe your scope
"remembers" syncs when powered off. I sync in the area I expect to be observing,
usually near the Celestial Equator to my South.

When I'm going to image the ISS with Satellite Tracker I'll do a test run to see
the path the ISS will take overhead. I then focus and sync on a star near the
highest point of the ISS path. This improves my guiding considerably.

As to five or ten star alignments I don't think your scope can do that, I know
mine can't. Each sync erases the previous one. There is sophisticated software
(such as T-Point) that will memorize dozens of alignment stars and compensate
the scope to be aligned all over the sky. I never purchased such programs
because my old Classic is considered to inconsistent for such expensive
software.

TLEs are just text files (you can use either the standard .txt extension, or
.tle in SatTracker). Open microsoft's "notepad" (basic text editor under the
start>programs>accessories menu in any windows OS) and cut and paste the 3 lines
exactly as shown in Darwin's example.

If it helps, here is the one I have

STS 130
1 36394U 10004A 10039.41667712 .00283964 11884-4 12265-3 0 18

Just save it as a text file, tell Satellite Tracker to open it and away you go.

David, I`ve been trying to do this with an old Windows emulator
(Virtual PC for Mac) into the Visual tle file I`m getting with Open
file down near "batch predict" on the Sat tracker window but it`s
saying "could not open C:\ LXSAT\2 00130...etc.)I`m really stupid with
PC`s although I have one. I can copy the info from an email I`ve sent
myself from my Mac but can`t work out how I paste it to the
appropriate place....there being no option in the Sat Tracker menu bar
for "paste"....Apparently STS 130 is the ISS going on it`s position??
I`m giving up for the time being!

Mark.

You paste all 3 lines - the name - Shuttle and the next 2 lines (those
are the TLE - Two Line Elements) into the top of Visual.TLE. I also add
an asterisk "*" in front of "Shuttle" so it gets put near the top of the
list in Satellite Tracker. The Visual.TLE is probably in the C:\Program
files\LXSAT\ folder.

Then in Satellite Tracker... be sure to load the file (File - Open -
Visual.TLE)

I hope this helps.

STS stands for Space Transportation System. You have to edit a .TLE file pasting
the info into the 1st line.

STS-130 does appear to be in much the correct position (a little ahead
though of the Shuttle position on my GoSatWatch app. on the iPod Touch
(& I`ve updated the data on it) The Shuttle on your NASA data has a
number of 00130 & it is called STS-130 in my data (with a Norad number
of 36394) There dosen`t appear to be a Norad number in the NASA data
to check. What does the abbreviation STS stand for, by the way?Right
now on GoSatWatch the Shuttle is co-incident with the HST...Thanks,

Mark.

You can get the TLE (plus a bunch of extra data) directly from NASA at:
http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/SSapplications/Post/JavaSSOP/orbi\
t/SHUTTLE/SVPOST.html

for orbit 2 the TLE was:

      SHUTTLE
      1 00130U 10039.50511312 .00020000 00000-0 20000-3 0 9037

and for orbit 12 (MET 17 hrs 14 minutes)

      SHUTTLE
      1 00130U 10040.12976965 .00020000 00000-0 20000-3 0 9047

Hello David,
I found an STS-130 in the full catalog tle file but was unsure if this
was it, so went to the visual tle as you suggested & no sign of a
"STS"? Now I`m having difficulty downloading the full catalog again
(I`ve tried re-entering my password a couple of times) The Space
shuttle Endevour has been launched & is showing on my iPod GoSatWatch
app. south east of Japan at present. I understand it`s an ISS
servicing mission & appears to be following the orbit of the ISS on
this app. I`m in Australia & plan to catch a couple of hours sleep now
but will try again later..

Sure... just wait until after the launch and get the TLEs for it. I
think the Visual.tle includes the STS when it is up.

I never purchased such programs
because my old Classic is considered to inconsistent for such expensive
software.

Hello to all,
i've tried seaching for a proper alignment proceder.

This is mine-
1) Auto- alignment( tip,tilt,....GPS location). Align to one star then the
next.Done with Auto-alignment.

2) Go to polaris(which does not come into my cdd field of view until I center
it. Once centered I hold down the Enter button for 2sec. Control says " Press
enter to Syn.". Press enter once centered.

My Question(s) are
1)Is my alignment procedure right to track satellites?

2)When I "Syn" polrius does this only help to find polaris next time? or does
this also help the overall aligment?

meaning now that I've "syn" polaris I have a better chance of other star coming
into my field of view(better chance of tracking satellites)?

3) How would you do a five or ten star alignment( Would it be by "Syn" as
described above)?
Would this help me in tracking Satellites?

I have 12" LX200gps telescope with standard viewfinder attached and ccd camera
mounted on it(no mag, just telescope focused on ccd). It seems I always have to
adjust scope manully to center any star(very narrow field of view)

Trying to track satellites for the first time ever. Any help from you guys would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jose

There was also a last minute update to the file, so make sure you get both

The software is now freeware and in the files section. They have also

It does not happen very offen that I get the error on my LX200GPS 10", 12", 14",
RCX400 10" and 12" scopes, but they all do it if the conditions are right.
Usualy when the scope is pointing 180 degrees away from where the satellite will
be comming from, is the best chance to get the error.

Many years ago, I paid $20.00 for software download from Brent Heavenscape? and
used successfully very briefly. Have things changed much? Is Brent's software

better software choices for the lx200 classic? Mike

I never worry about prepositioning the scope. As soon as a sat rises above
the horizon, I start tracking and it has PLENTY of time to get to the
starting point. It takes quite a while to get even 10 degrees elevation,
due to it's apparent motion - I usually have to wait a fair amount of time
before it gets high enough to see it in my telescope.

This morning I had a 67 degree pass. The ISS didn't hit sunlight until it
was at 42.5 degrees elevation and it was snowing, but that isn't relevant
to this discussion.

It took 1:08 to reach 5 degrees elevation, 1:58 to reach 10 degrees
elevation and 2:35 to reach 15 degrees elevation. At that point it was 1045
km away. At closest approach it was only 377.7 km away.

I don't know how long it can take a telescope to slew across the sky, but I
think it would normally have plenty of time unless one has a really good
view of the horizon and wanted to see it when it was very low in the sky.

Having said that, it IS a good idea to lock on early enough to adjust
tracking while it's apparent motion is still low. It probably has to be at
least 20 or 25 degrees elevation before I have any chance of seeing it.

The time it took to rise each 5 degrees in elevation was 1:08, :50, :37,
:26, :20:, :16, :12, :11, :9, :8, :7. This isn't the whole story because it
shows only elevation and not apparent motion.

I just look at the world map to see where the satellite will be comming from,
then use the hand paddle (AutoStar-2) to manualy slew the scope to that area
(only if its going to be a long slew, EG more than ~120 degrees).

Satellite Tracker's time to just after the satellite is to appear above the
horizon. Then I hit track and the scope slews to the desired spot near the
horizon. I stop tracking and set S.T. back to system time. All this saves is a
long first slew. I have plenty of time before the satellite clears the houses
and trees.

Well this sounds like the most creative group spammer I've ever run into. Note
the last post was from someone named "Steve", and this spammer was creative
enough to figure out the term "satellite tracking" from the group name
"satellitetracker". And (S)he waited 4 days after joining to post, instead of
the usual <24 hours.

"Saman", you have about 30 seconds to justify your existence here before I ban

Hey Leo,

That is a great tip! That first slew can be a long one sometimes and
already being there in the beginning is the best answer. Meade's built
in satellite tracking program go's to the where the object will be and
then waits for the signal that the object is above the horizon so the
tracking can begin. I always thought that's the way SatTraker should
have done it too, but it doesn't, and I wasn't smart enough to
incorporate this idea, Duh!

Thanks,

Steve

True, though this may not be what causes the error "Unable to position
telescope within time limits. May need to increase maximum slew rate."
I'd expect something to the effect of not above horizon.

The way I preposition the scope to where the satellite will appear is I
set Satellite Tracker's time to just after the satellite is to appear
above the horizon. Then I hit track and the scope slews to the desired
spot near the horizon. I stop tracking and set S.T. back to system time.
All this saves is a long first slew. I have plenty of time before the
