That's right. NeoMagic made several chipsets for video. And they made
some that combined the video and audio into one chipset for laptops.
The chipset I have, a "NeoMagic MagicMedia 256ZX", is one of the
latter. Unfortunately, there where at least three versions of this and
related chipsets with differences in the sound side of things. The
sound could be SoundBlaster-16 hardware compatible, CS4232 compatible,
or, an AC97 compatible version.
The video side of these are OK. SDD/SNAP support them, and, IBM made
native drivers for them. I didn't find these until after I registered
SDD, so, I've never bothered to test them.
The sound is supposed to be OK for CS4232 version and probably the
SB-16 version (I don't remember if I've heard any reports about the
SB-16 version under OS/2). The appropriate drivers for those chipsets
can be used. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to have been drivers
written for the AC97 version. Well, I have been told that there were
drivers written for one of these chipsets for a laptop manufacturer,
but, as far as I can tell, they've never been released into the wild.
