A Day for Celebration, a Day for Action
Wednesday, 3rd December marks this year's annual observance of the International
Day of Disabled Persons. The theme of this year's day is "Dignity and Justice
for All of Us".
The Federation of Disabled People is working in partnership with Brighton & Hove
Council and the local Primary Care Trust to celebrate the day. An extensive
programme of activities is planned, including conversation tables, independent
living workshops and information stalls run by our member organisations. The
International day will also feature the federation's AGM and the launch of our
innovative Accessible City Guide.
Entertainment for the day will include a talk by Alison Lapper (the disabled
artist, writer and model best known as the subject of the fourth plinth
sculpture in Trafalgar Square). Also confirmed for the day are the group of
disabled and non-disabled comics "Abnormally Funny People" as well as the
Carousel band Beat Express!
The full programme for the day is as follows:
2.00 - 4.00pm Come and join in the conversation tables on independent living,
browse around the information stalls and visit the relaxation area.
4.00pm Join us for refreshments.
4.15 - 4.30pm The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Brighton & Hove,
Councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn will open the Annual General Meeting of the
Federation of Disabled People. This will be followed by a short address from
Councillor Dee Simpson, Council Cabinet Member for Community Affairs, Inclusion
and Internal Relations.
4.30 - 5.30pm Join us for the Federation of Disabled People's AGM and the launch
of our innovative new project, Accessible City Guide. Learn what the Federation
has achieved over the last year and our plans for their future.
5.30 - 6.00pm We are delighted to have local artist and writer Alison Lapper
talking to us about her life.
6.00 - 6.30pm Join us for refreshments with a festive theme.
6.30 - 8.00pm Enjoy the evening's entertainment: A musical performance by local
Carousel rock band Beat Express. Comedy from Abnormally Funny People, a group of
gifted stand-up comedians strutting their funny stuff. They are all very, very,
very funny people!
Signers, a palentypist and hearing loop will be available on the day. If you
