I've no idea what that was about, I refreshed it several times before I

Hello all

Volunteers needed for SCIP¹s Social Media Surgery at

Get Involved Launch Day
Hove Town Hall, 10am 5pm, Saturday 21 November 2009

* Do you know what Twitter, blogging or Youtube is?
* Could you explain how it works to someone who¹s never seen it before?

We¹re looking for volunteers for SCIP¹s Social Media Surgery, which will
form part of the Get Involved Launch Day at Hove Town Hall on Saturday 21st
November.

We are taking inspiration from the Community Web Surgeries we ran earlier in
the year, as well as the ever-expanding Social Media Surgeries that run in
Birmingham, such as www.paradisecircus.com/social-media-surgeries/

Social Media Surgeons could be anyone with some experience of using sites
such as Facebook, Twitter or Youtube. The event is open to the general
public and we would like you to show them around the internet, introduce
them Twitter, Youtube and other social media sites and discuss how it could
be useful to them. You don¹t need to be an expert, just know enough to help
show people what all the fuss is about.

If you think you can help please visit our website at
www.scip.org.uk/Social_Media_Surgery to register your details and indicate
what time you can attend.

Thank you

Mark

*CLIMATE CHANGE AND MULTINATIONALS – A VIEW FROM THE GRASSROOTS IN COLOMBIA
*
   **

World leaders and activists are preparing to descend on Copenhagen to
discuss climate change, but have we fully understood its structural causes?
Colombian social movements argue that multinational oil and mining
corporations, especially BP and other British based companies, have
destroyed their environment, their human rights and social fabric. This
raises vital questions linking environmental justice with international
solidarity.

As Colombian communities struggle to defend their territories against
corporate plunder, what can be done to build links with those affected by
the seemingly unquenchable thirst for profit? How can corporations like BP
be made accountable? And how do we connect our common concern to stop
climate disaster with the issue of the global North’s ecological debt to the
South?

** *Isaac Marín* is a grass roots* campesino* leader from Eastern Colombia.
His first organisational and political space was with the National
Association of Peasant Farmers (ANUC), holding several positions at the
regional level for a period of 12 years. He is a founder member of the group
Corporación COS-PACC, a civil organisation with national reach since its
inception into social and political life 7 years ago. From this space, they
contribute to the construction of different political and organizational
processes with rural communities, neighbourhoods, student groups, women’s
associations, environmentalists, trade unions and organizations defending
human rights.

Alongside these movements COS-PACC work to defend their territory and the
enforceability of political, social, cultural and environmental rights of
the communities and the Colombian people.

NB we may be able to add one or two extra events to the tour. If there is
not an event near you and you want to organise one, even at short notice,

Hi all

We have a Minolta EP1054 black ink photocopier that we no longer require.

The unit is reliable and sturdy, however will not collate or staple etc.

Two people would be required to come and pick it up as it is very heavy.

It will need to sit on a strong surface approx 3ft long.

Please email or call The St John's Centre on
stjohnscentre@... or 729603 if you are interested.

Progress on Community Allowance
-----------------------------------------------
Progress Is being made on running pilots for a Community Allowance, which would
see people on benefits undertaking work that strengthens their neighbourhood.
Pilots are proposed for Lincolnshire, Manchester and Portsmouth/Isle of Wight. A
report from New Economics Foundation also reckons that for every pound invested
in the Community Allowance, £10 worth of social value will be generated. See

What happened to Margaret Haywood was a scandal and this is very welcome .
Using the pretext of 'confidentiality [which isn't much use if you're dead!] she
was struck of the register by the Nursing & Midwifery Council for exposing the
neglect and maltreatment of the elderly at our very own Royal Sussex County
Hospital.  Presumably the patients should have been asked if they wanted their
neglect to be recorded!  And no doubt the abusers should have been asked too!
It was this type of reaction which caused at least 2 people not to come forward
with suspicions over Harold Shipman, which led to the proposals by Dame Janet
Smith (now of the Court of Appeal) to strengthen the Public Disclosure
Information Act, one of New Labour's few radical measures.  Suffice to say the
recommendations have been shelved.

Just a quick email to ask a quick favour.

'Heavy Load' has been short listed for a CDN/BroadcastNow! Diversity Awards
- for programmes that encourage diversity in mainstream media. The Award is
judged by an online public vote over the next 9 days - so please could you
spare a minute to vote for the film NOW at:

<http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/survey.zgi?p=WEB229U7C6GMAH&store=1>
&store=1

If you still haven't seen the film it's now at a bargain price from Amazon
or a slightly higher price on our website - it's better for us if you buy it
from us of course! (And would make a lovely Christmas present).

We've got some more news to announce shortly so I'll be in touch again next
week.

Cheers
Paul

Hello Scippers

Here's a note about the next open forum Community Dialogue for Change are
running. All welcome.

Community Dialogue for Change (CDC)

  *Free Donations welcome

Facilitators; Anup Karia, Stanya Studentova, Olufemi Hughes

This is the last in this series of 4 on the theme `From Isolation to Community'
– (and related social /political issues of isolation, injustice, violence and
our shared community)

In all 3 forums we've had deep conversations, some bringing momentary
connection and understanding, some reaching an edge that requires more
attention. We grapple with how do we speak about tough social issues that affect
us personally and the world around us? How do we take care of ourselves and
others in a passionate process? How to support all voices and challenge societal
injustices? How we can listen to each other and ourselves, holding the space for
a deeper understanding?

Real commitment to working together, whether in the rough or the smooth to find
ways through has been a hallmark of past forums. We will continue to facilitate
to support and deepen the process of dialogue in the next forum and will also
offer time for us to explore ways we might come together to integrate some of
these processes in our lives.

CLIMATE JUSTICE NOW! speaker tour with Mohammed Shamsuddoha (Equity Bangladesh)
and Caroline Lucas (Green Party leader).

6:30pm, Friday 20th November 2009 at Community Base, Queen's Road, Brighton.

Extreme weather events, melting freshwater glaciers and increasing droughts are
hitting the world's poor first and hardest.

Yet it's the rich industrialised countries that have caused the climate crisis.

In the run-up to the UN climate negotiations in Copenhagen this December, rich
countries are trying to wriggle out of their responsibilities.

Come along to CLIMATE JUSTICE NOW! and hear speakers including Mohammed
Shamsuddoha from Equity Bangladesh and Caroline Lucas from the Green Party
explain what is needed to redress the `climate debt' that the rich countries owe
the global south.

By working together, we can make this happen. Come along, listen, contribute if
you like, and meet like-minded people. We'll be serving tea and home-made cake,
and there'll be a chance to find out more about various Brighton-based climate
change campaigning groups.

Climate Justice Now! is a coalition between Jubilee Debt Campaign, People &
Planet, Friends of the Earth and World Development Movement.

There is Bangladeshi buffet food, drinks and a fun filled packed
evening!

As well as displays showing you exactly what the Trust does all across
Brighton & Hove, there will be a presentation by Cabinet Councillor Dee
Simson on the councils hopes for community development and neighbourhood
working in the city. Leader of the Council, Mary Mears, will also be on
hand to present diplomas to the latest successful group of local WICO
(Working in Communities) 'graduates'. There will, of course, also be the
usual AGM stuff, including the election of trustees.

Please fell free to attend if you are interested in community work in
the city and have any interest in what we at The Trust do.
