"Communication with symbols, from the web to the internet and beyond"

Abstract
How are we to engage people with low literacy in the burgeoning development ofthe internet? It is well documented that
a large minority of the population is functionally illiterate. How might they be encouraged to communicate, author and
publish work as they develop skills in media literacy? How can we ensure developers understand and incorporate these
needs into technical specifications? What funding model will provide the best outcomes? Who controls our icon libraries
and how they will develop? How can we ensure that everyone can contribute to our virtual future?

was published in the Journal of Assistive Technologies Volume 2 Issue 3 due September 2008.

it may also be of interest to note the recent launch of the Web Foundation by Tim Berners-Lee

BBC interview with Tim Berners-Lee by Pallab Ghosh:
"The Foundation will also look at how the benefits of the web can be taken to those who cannot read or write."
"The Foundation will also look at concerns that the web has become less democratic, and its use influenced too much by large corporations and vested interests."
