Team,
I added Axway as another company that uses Scrum. Are there any other
companies that you all know about that use Scrum too? If so, add them
to the database and be as complete as possible in the profile.
Thanks!

Team,
We can create team apparel (ex. rugby shirts) with our logo on them.
All we need is a logo, I know a company that can do the rest. Anybody
out there have any feedback on a logo design?

There has been some discussion about having a meeting where Scrum
folks like us can meet and share our stories. I am thinking quarterly
or maybe bi-monthly for now. Since we are small it should not be
difficult to secure a venue.
Oh, let me eat my own dog food now...

added. Enjoy!

Here is a fascinating and disturbing article regarding projects inside
the military. Maybe if they used Scrum they would be more successful...

YES...if somebody in the DoD wakes up.

Let's start by creating a logo.
As a member of the Scrum Phoenix group, I would like a logo that can
be easily digitized or rendered into a vector graphics file, so that
we can use this logo on websites, blog, apparel, or other items the
group deems worthwhile. The logo should be monochromatic and distinctive.
OK, let's see what we come up with.

Good blog. I think the subject matter is appropriate since there is a
lot of interest in Scrum but not as much expertise in it. The blog
should help deepen the knowledge of neophyte Scrum Master/Product Owner
out there. This is crucial to the success of Scrum, spreading the word
without diluting the (potent) practical results.
Well done!

My thought is that if one does not exist, an Agile/Scrum User Group

work in the software development field. I know several of them have

have a group that focuses on this aspect of project management within

It looks like the Scrum Alliance is working on designs for their
official rugby jersey.
Why not do the same for our little group?
There is a promotions company that I have worked with that can do one-
off embroidery for apparel items. This means we could have our own
little Scrum store.
If somebody could design a logo that could be converted to a vector
graphic file, I can talk to my contact and get an online store setup
for us.
Does that interest anybody?

Everybody,
Confession time, I have not been to a PMI-Phoenix meeting since last
fall. What I am wondering about is if it would be worth my/our while
to form a Scrum group within that organization? There seems to be a
heavy emphasis on traditional PM practices within this group, however
there are many members who work within software development. Since
Scrum is emerging within the Greater Phoenix market, it makes sense
to raise the profile of it within PMI.
Dan Rawsthorne says that PMI is interested in Agile frameworks,
including Scrum. I don't see that here in Phoenix yet but it may be
lurking just underneath the surface. Anybody out there a member of
PMI-Phoenix? If so, we may want to talk about getting together at
the March meeting.
Ok, take some time to translate my musings...I barely understand what
I just wrote.

Fellow Scrumers,
Do any of you want to practice using scrum? I have an opportunity for
this but want to see if there is any interest first. This could be a
great way to see scrum in action.
The situation is this, I am the head of an 800-person non-profit
athletic association. It is Arizona Masters Swimming www.azlmsc.org
and there is a lot of work that needs to be done. The catch is that
nobody is motivated to do any work, besides me and a couple of others.
There are a lot of possibilities though.
Why not use scrum to get some things going? It is a radical idea but
one I want to submit to all of you. This is a great chance to take a
problem (apathetic, stagnant organization) and get some things done.
Right now I am open to suggestions because I don't know where to go.
Any thoughts on this?
Doug
Team,
I have added a bunch of links to the site that are related to scrum and
agile. Some are ones that I have bookmarked, others came from the big
scrum Yahoo group. Either way, take a look at these and see if they
help you at all. If you have any good ones that are not listed, go
ahead and add them. Let's swarm on this one!
Enjoy!

The biggest challenge I see is companies that want to tinker with
Scrum. Dan R. (from Danube) calls this "Scrum but..." in organizations
that claim to use Scrum. There is a temptation to launch Scrum and
benefit from it while somehow keeping dysfunction hidden. This is
related to people not being accountable and honest within an
organization based upon existing practices. Companies (which are
comprised of people) are not wiling to be honest with themselves and
have the courage to do Scrum all-out.
There is also a temptation to take a framework like Scrum
and "customize" it. Some people think of themselves as being very
smart, so smart that they can tinker with Scrum even if they are not
experienced in it. Their "tweaks" are used because "that is the way
things are done here" or some other BS.
I would also say many technicians are content to work in their little
cubicles and work on their little part of the problem. Swarming on a
problem, getting out of their comfort zone, or helping a teammate
outside of their role is a challenge for most. There is comfort in
famiarity, even if the result is 70% failure.
Also, QA and Testing gets left off until the end and everybody winds up
looking to me (the BA/PM) for answers. The thought seems to be "tell
me what to do" and all will be well. Self-direction, initiative, and
cross-functionality appear to be rare.
That is my experience in my six months of working with Scrum in two
different companies. Dysfunction came to light immediately, but
leadership sought to dim the lights so as not to upset the applecart.
Cynical assessment? Perhaps it is but that is what I saw. The company
and the staff need to really buy into ALL of Scrum for it to be truly
effective. Otherwise you will see improvements at the margins and
greater success, but not the dramatic gains that CAN be realize by
going all-out.
My $0.02 worth...

I guess I'll use this to introduce myself.
My name is Tony, and I work as Development Manager for an Online
Womens magazine in Scottsdale. Our parent company in Los Angeles just
hired a new CTO and he is introducing Scrum to all the development
teams. Having come from an office that somewhat practiced Agile in
the past, I was familiar but not knowledgeable on Scrum.
After getting our feet wet and getting in the flow of things, we (as
a team) are really starting to dive headfirst into this and taken up
a lot of interest because of the quick results we've seen.
I intend to go for my CSM shortly. We're also going to be bringing in
a CSC into the office to help with identifying issues, and helping to
ease the mindsets of the execs who arent sold on the idea yet.
Right now I'm reading : Implementing Lean Software Development by
Mary and Tom Poppendieck and I'm finding it to be a great overview of
Agile and how it relays into what we're doing now.
Thanks!!
I was actually thinking about starting a group since I did not see
one as of a couple of weeks ago.
Great minds think alike.
This should be a good group since the focus will be local and it
won't be a huge monster like the scrumdevelopment group. We can
replicate a lot of the knowledge without all of the overhead (and
noise) of a huge group.
I just received my CSM certification two weeks ago and am excited
about getting deeper into scrum. It's great stuff and something that
I am WAY into now.
More postings to follow.

Welcome to Scrum Phoenix. We're here to pretty much provide support,
answer questions, and help others who either are learning Scrum or are
super experienced. I'll be posting my own introduction soon and maybe
soon someone will join the list :)
