We've been running since 2002; we're the youngest speculative fiction
convention in San Diego. Our primary focus is on literature, but we
also address gaming, art, media, science and society in our
programming. We were the first convention to put our proposed panel
topics online in a voting-enabled format to get the fans' input. Each
year we focus part of our programming around a central theme, chosen
based on our Guest of Honor's work.

In honor of Larry Niven, our theme this year is Alien Cultures. As
Wikipedia puts it, "The creation of thoroughly worked-out alien
species, which are very different from humans both physically and
mentally, is recognized as one of Niven's main strengths." Join us in
exploring the many alien species of SF and their languages, laws,
social structures, religions, traditions, arts and mythologies.

Conjecture 6 will be at the Crowne Plaza - San Diego (formerly the
Red Lion Hanalai), located at 2270 Hotel Circle North, San Diego, CA
92108, in Mission Valley.

In addition to panel discussions, there will be a masquerade, a
dealers' room, an art show, a gaming room, an anime room, parties,
and more.

Hey Futurists,

One of our own will be giving a talk this month! Danielle & her
colleague will be speaking about Innovations Academy, a new charter
school that she is opening in San Diego. Nothing quite like it exists
here in San Diego or even nationally, so now is the time to get
involved in the creation of this exciting new endeavor. Please see
InnovationsAcademy.org for more information.

Our meeting will focus on what a week at Innovations Academy looks
like, as well as how you can get involved to open this amazing
community of learners. As they say, "it takes a village," and this is
more true to the creation of this educational institute than anything
Danielle have ever known.

See you at 6:30 this Saturday with your hopes, dreams, and inspired
thoughts!

Hello all,

Thanks so much to Rob for sending out a reminder email! What a great emeritus
moderator he is, eh? But I'm still looking to one of you all to step up to the
plate & be the new moderator for our group. Mmmm? How about it??? Maybe YOU
would like an excuse to contact anyone you'd like to hear speak...?
Vernor Vinge is speaking this Sunday at 6 pm at the Barnes & Noble. His talk
will be on:

What If the Singularity Does NOT Happen?

(But he does still think that it will!)
He's a fascinating, engaging speaker. There will be no better way for the
intellectually curious futurist to spend this next Sunday evening than to come
out to the almost traffic-free Barnes & Noble to hear Vernor (and maybe buy one
of his books - if you are a sci-fi fan & for some reason haven't got ALL of his
books yet!). I'm even making my new boss fly me back to SD for the weekend so I
can do my last round of moderating. I will hope to see y'all this Sunday in Mira
Misa.

Hello Future Salonistas,

I am excited to report that Vernor Vinge has accepted our invitation
to come speak on March 25th at 6 pm at the Barnes & Noble in Mira
Mesa!!! He came & spoke with us a while back & was one of the most
engaging speakers we've had. On this last Sunday of the month (our new
standard meeting day), he'll be giving a talk he has already presented
once at SDSU earlier this February:
What If the Singularity Does NOT Happen
He presents several possible scenarios. I was happy to see his
disclaimer on the web:

>"Important note for those surfing this talk out of context :-) I still

>regard the Singularity as the most likely non-catastrophic outcome

>for our near future."

Whew!
& I'm also impressed that Vernor, putative father of the term
"singularity" , has the openness and flexibility of mind even to
consider these alternative scenarios. If, somehow, you are a futurist
who has not heard of the fabulous, forward-thinking, mathematician and
science fiction author Vernor Vinge, please just google him. One good
talk he gave at our parent organization' s conference is at:
http://www.itconver sations.com/ shows/detail711. html
Please come join us to hear what this celebrated author has to say on
a very futurist topic! Please also consider purchasing one of his

you ask him nicely. :) I bought his new "Rainbows End" a few months

Hello Salonistas,

My company's asking me to move to D.C. to take on a somewhat more interesting
position...and they want me to start next Monday!!! Kind of sudden, exciting,
and nerve-wracking. So...I need a volunteer (or two or three) who would like to
take on the moderator role for our group. My #2, Andrew, happens also to be
moving to another state in the near future, so he's not available.
We're set for this month with Vernor on the 25th & I have two contacts I'm
working on for the next one or two months. Plus the list of possibilities I
shared with some of you a couple of meetings ago. So - step on up & let me know
if you are willing! Thanks!

Abstract:
The headlong exponential growth of information technology enabled by
Moore's Law -- an observation made in 1965 by Intel's co-founder,
Gordon Moore, that predicts the number of transistors built in
computer chips will double approximately every two years --will soon
reach a crisis stage. However, society is increasingly dependent on a
vigorous information technology industry, which currently represents a
significant portion of the world's intellectual effort. Join Dr. Eli
Yablonovitch, The Northrop Grumman Opto-Electronics Chair, and
professor of electrical engineering at the University of California,
Los Angeles, as he discusses the growth of the industry, and how there
has been a delicate equilibrium between decreasing prices, balanced by
exponentially growing unit volumes. Will the end of Moore's Law mean
stagnation, leading to dropping prices, and a net shrinkage of the
overall effort dedicated to information technology? The answer
depends upon physics, economics, and sociology, and also relies on the
faith of ever-expanding human ingenuity.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Eli Yablonovitch, a member of the National Academy of Engineering
and the National Academy of Sciences, graduated with the Ph.D. degree
in applied physics from Harvard University in 1972. In 1992 he joined
the University of California, Los Angeles, where he is now The
Northrop Grumman Opto-Electronics Chair, professor of electrical
engineering.

Dr. Yablonovitch is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and
Electronic Engineers, the Optical Society of America, and the American
Physical Society. He is a Life Member of Eta Kappa Nu, and been
awarded the Adolf Lomb Medal, the W. Streifer Scientific Achievement
Award, the R.W. Wood Prize, and the Julius Springer Prize.

His work has covered a broad variety of topics including: nonlinear
optics, laser-plasma interaction, infrared laser chemistry,
photovoltaic energy conversion, strained-quantum-well lasers, and
chemical modification of semiconductor surfaces. Currently his main
interests are in optoelectronics, high speed optical communications,
high efficiency light-emitting diodes and nano-cavity lasers, photonic
crystals at optical and microwave frequencies, quantum computing and
quantum communication.

Hello all,

In light of the fact that the first Sunday of the month is the same day as the
Los Angeles Futurists hold their meeting, I've asked Barnes & Noble if we could
switch to .... The Last Sunday of the Month. & they have said yes. SO - we are
on for the following schedule - always the last Sunday of the month:

  March 25 (the fourth Sunday)
  April 29th (the fifth Sunday)
  May 27th (the fourth Sunday)
  June 24th (the fourth Sunday)
  July 29th (the fifth Sunday)

Time will still be 6 pm.
Sometimes the L.A. folks come down to San Diego & vice versa; this change will
enable our groups to continue to cross-fertilize (and enable me to badger John
Smart into coming down & giving us an updated version of his thoughts on the
future!). I have one potential speaker for March & will let you know details as
I have them.

Also, thanks to everyone who replied to my request for suggestions on how to
improve my moderating (moderation?) of our discussions. I got some good ones.
For example:
  1) Invite everyone present to say a couple of sentences about the topic, if
they have any to share, as we go around doing introductions. This can be fodder
for discussion later. (Kind of like impromptu agenda-building)
  2) Keep to the topic (my difficulty here is that I find almost any conversation
among intelligent people satisfying, but a few people have offered to help me be
more aware when the conversation is straying far afield.)
  3) Respect for others is mandatory. OK to differ on opinions, and even debate
them (that is fun), but keep it friendly. (my difficulty here is that I don't
usually take what people say seriously enough to get offended. Instead I am
entertained. But I will try to be more alert to when folks cross the line.)
I'm still learning, so please feel free to make more suggestions as they occur
to you.

I've been enjoying the new NAFSN discussion list - maybe some of you have also
joined it. It's very positive in its orientation - upbeat, optimistic future
commentaries & some interesting people to meet in cyberspace. If you didn't get
the invite, or misplaced/deleted it, let me know & I'll forward one on.

  See you on March 25th!

  -Lisa

Hi SD Futurists,

Two items FYI:

1. Our new Yahoo! Group, North American Future Salon - Talk
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nafsntalk/> already has 50 members from
across the US and Canada, and is getting great introduction posts and
news items. Hope you can join and add your passion and insight to the
conversation!

2. We've just posted Futures Studies - Programs and Resources
<http://accelerating.org/gradprograms.html> at the ASF website. This
is an annotated list of all the global programs in Futures Studies we've
been able to find to date. Thanks to Martin Andersen for his research
help on that. We made the page because there was no one place on the web
that listed all the most promising places where one might get formal
interdisciplinary training in thinking about the future. We'd love to
rank these programs, and that would be a good task for an enterprising
student (of one of the FS programs perhaps) or ASF volunteer.

By my count there are only four PhD and ten MS programs today that can
be considered primary programs, and we listed another forty-one (I'm
sure there are more) that we consider good secondary programs. That's a
lot fewer primary programs than we might expect, given that it's been 32
years since the first FS program (Houston, 1975) emerged. Still, it
could have been worse, at least some growth has occurred.

I think there are two main problems keeping the number of programs so
low. The first is that we don't yet have a strong global culture of
foresight, even in the developed world, so it's hard to convince
academia and the public of the value of futures studies programs. I
think the second problem is that the programs themselves haven't done a
good enough job of improving their curriculum, admissions standards, and
marketing to students.

In a world of accelerating change, the value of futures studies just
gets greater every year, so the onus is on us to start networking,
improving, and promoting these programs. ASF will do its small part in
that regard, and if any of you want to help out on any aspect of that
feel free to contact me off list.

Also, I'm sure our list is still incomplete, especially for secondary
programs, so if you know others that aren't listed, or have page edits
or additions for the current list, please email me.

Thanks!

JS

Hello all,

Thanks very much to everyone who came & took part in our discussion
on the Future of War. I heard a few new ideas - such as about
non-lethal millimeter wave pain weapons (from first-time and
well-prepared attendee Beth - thanks Beth!), new guesses as to why we
went to war in Iraq (keep our war machine oiled - thanks Rob), and
reasons why we rape & pillage aren't as popular during wartime as they
once were. (Thank goodness whatever the reason!) Rob also mentioned
a statistic that globally violence is declining precipitously - some
good news suggesting the future of war is bleak.
Towards the end, Andrew waved the banner for Western Civilization &
the propagation of middle-class values. This is something I often
mention & feel gratitude about - Western Civilization. I know it's
not PC to be tooting our own horn, but I say "Yay!" for W. Civ. In
particular, as Andrew also noted, the status of women. I shudder to
think of being born as property somewhere. The thread of the
conversation was something to the effect of as the traditional spoils
of war are not something the invading country wants to take, the
allure of war for aggression's sake will also decrease. Some wars
might still have to happen. & of course, I brought "The Lucifer
Principle" by Howard Bloom to represent the idea of war being
intrinsic to how we've succeeded in the game of group evolution. (I'd
also brought "The Pentagon's New Map" by Thomas P. M. Barnett, some of
who's points were confirmed by a first-time attendee who'd been in the
army.)
We did wander off the topic of the Future of War to the present of
war, and how come we went to war in Iraq, and what constitutes
success. I am just a beginner at the herd cats I mean lead a Future
Salon discussion gig. So, I would appreciate your suggestions on how
I could do a better job. Some people like details, some prefer just
the big picture philosophizing. Ya can't please all of the people all
of the time, but I'd like to strike a happy balance. I'm pretty
omnivorous in my information consumption, but I know some of y'all are
more picky. So, please let me know. In particular, I could use some
help keeping us on topic. A couple of folks have offered to assist
with this & I will take them up on it.
I will work on getting an official speaker next month. Also I am
going to check with the bookstore as to whether we can switch to the
third Sunday. I know, we just changed the day & time, however we now
directly conflict with the L.A. group & some of them have sometimes
made the trek down to S.D. and vice-versa, so I don't want to preclude
that possibility.

Hi San Diego Futurists,

ASF is launching a new discussion list for our North American Future
Salon Network. I hope those of you who like sharing cool thoughts, and
listening to and learning from the conversation of fascinating,
inquisitive, intelligent, and courteous future-oriented thinkers will
join up today. As always, you can set your Yahoo! List Preferences to
receive Individual Emails (highest volume), a Daily Digest (one email a
day) or Web Only (no email).

   [77]
The ASF Future Salon Network <http://accelerating.org/futuresalon.html>
has grown to an impressive 2,340 online members in 15 different U.S.
salon communities. In addition to all our local salon talk lists, we
feel it's time to create one list to rule them all, one list to find
them, one list to bring them all and in the brightness, bind them. :)

Seriously, we need a list for our entire North American Network. NAFSN -
Talk is a great place to stay connected with and meet new
future-oriented friends across the United States and Canada. Grow your
network!

NAFSN - Talk is a moderated list. It will seek to be bit more formal and
professional than our local salon talk lists. It will be pre-filtered
for spam, flames, rants, angry diatribes, and excessive long-windedness.
We futurists (see Twelve Types of Futures Thinking
<http://www.accelerationwatch.com/futuristdef.html> ) can sometimes get
impractical, extremist, and overly focused on our own agendas, and we we
want the list to be a cut above the norm. Just great, thoughtful,
professional insights, discussion and very civil debate about the many
fascinating facets of our future.

You can sign up for NAFSN - Talk at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nafsntalk/
<http://groups.yahoo.com/nafsntalk/>
If the list rules look good to you, we would love to have your voice in
the community!

Thanks for being part of the salon community, and I look forward to
talking to you online.

Wishing you the very best future in 2007,

John Smart

President, ASF

It's kind of lengthly but you've got to see what we will be seeing in the
future. It's a cross of Minority Report and Star Trek.

"The Science and Fiction of Autism: How to Tell the Difference"

Autism is one of the most fascinating yet controversial of
childhood disorders. Everything about autism, from etiology to
characteristics to treatment, has evoked strong disagreements
and passions. What do we know and what do we not know about
this devastating disorder? How can parents, educators, and the
general public cut through the hype, the unproven, and the
blatantly bogus? These children depend on us to do so.

Hello Future Salonistas,

Last month was fun - we had a pretty wide-ranging discussion & were graced with
a couple of new folks & some exotically colored out-of-town visitors. Also
parking was easy! Thanks very much to everyone who came & added to the fun.
This Sunday we'll be having another "Discussion & Book Review" format. I
thought I'd focus the discussion a bit more by choosing a topic. The topic most
favored by the few folks I checked with is:

  The Future of War
  - any chance we could dodge some?
  - will they mostly be about economics or religion or territory or oil or water
or ?
  - technologies that will likely come into play (e.g. Singapore's Urban Soldier
Robot Challenge, Swarm-bots, etc.)
  - role of the U.N., NATO, the Catholic Church, & other similar/comparable
organizations

Please bring any books you have read that relate to this topic & be prepared to
say a few words about your book(s) at the meeting. Science Fiction is ok! As is
most any other genre.
I will look forward to seeing some of you this Sunday.

  - Lisa

  P.S.

Other topics under consideration for future meetings: (Let me know if either of
these sound good to you, and suggest any ideas that you have as well.)

Future of American Society - economic, social, techonological
  - I saw in slashdot that no American City made it into the most technologically
advanced ranking according to the Intelligent Community Forum: "For the second
year running, no U.S. city has made the list of the world's top Intelligent
Communities of 2007, as selected by global think tank Intelligent Community
Forum. The ICF selects the Intelligent Community list based on how advanced the
communities are in deploying broadband, building a knowledge-based workforce,
combining government and private-sector "digital inclusion," fostering
innovation and marketing economic development."
  - Part of his could actually be a book review - Chalmers Johnson's "Sorrows of
Empire"...I'm maybe a third into it...

  Future of the Muslim Community
  - This Sunday I'll be picking up a book I ordered last month called "The Caged
Virgin". I read about half of it while travelling in Canada over the holidays -
an amazingly courageous commentary and call to action by a Muslim woman.

Hello!

I made it back from Canada - somewhat more arduous a return than I'd
anticipated - 24 hours of travel - starting at 11:30 pm...not pretty.
:) I've also learned, two minutes ago, that I am off the hook for
going out of town tomorrow evening. So...let's get together at the
bookstore for all who will. We don't have a speaker or presentation,
so it'll just be an informal gathering. If even three of us show up,
it'll make for a good discussion. I'll bring along the list of
potential speakers I've accumulated for the new year & we can all gloat
over the possibilities. (Forrest - I've got you on the list. :) If
any of you have articles or books you'd like to share, bring those
along, too! Thanks.
See some of you tomorrow evening 6 pm at Barnes & Noble!

Joe, Beth, Brian, Gerry + 1... I know it would be a pretty
interesting discussion with just these folks in attendance...
Forrest renewng his offer to speak... Andrew's offer still on the
table along with his caveat that he might be out of town, me still
unsure about attending... The excitement builds! :)
Just popped in to check email after my hosts have gone to bed here in
lovely Revelstoke where it's been DUMPing snow!!
So, 5 folks for sure would like to attend, 2 maybes, and one or two
potential presenters. I'm getting home late Friday; will check again
for feedback & speak with Andrew & make the call on Saturday morning.
  Happy 2007!

  -Lisa
