My dad grew a garden in the desert outside Canon
City, CO, and he had it surrounded by a barrier of
corrugated metal. It wasn't pretty but I do think
it helped protect from the hot wind and rabbits as
well. He grew some remarkable produce, in spite
of having to haul water! They said it couldn't be
done!
The compost and chicken litter will be great for
your soil! One of the neatest ideas I saw
recently was a chicken coop built with enclosures
on both sides. They would alternate years, one
year the chicken run would be on one side and they
would garden on the other, and they the following
year they would switch and garden on the ground
the chickens had lived on the year before.
