The SFR04 (Sonic ranged detector?) simply outputs a pulse width. This
cannot be recognized by the COM port, it needs a micro (such as a stamp) to
put this data in RS-232 format.

An alternative it try to use the Parallel port instead and monitor the pins
for change, but don't ask me how.
