Hi Tara,

Fortunately my hens haven’t yet discovered how good their eggs taste, but I looked up the problem in the book, “Storey’s Guide to Raising Chickens,” by Gail Damerow. She says once a chicken gets the taste for eggs, it’s really hard to break them of the habit and it can spread to other birds. I guess you’ve figured that out already. She suggests removing or debeaking the culprit (I’m not recommending that, just passing on her advice!). She also says they may eat their eggs if bored or if their rations “allow chickens to satisfy their nutritional too quickly, leaving them with nothing to do.”

She also suggests discouraging nonlaying activities in the nest by hanging a curtain in front of it to darken it. Cut the curtain into hanging strips or temporarily pin up one corner, she suggests, so that hens aren’t suspicious about going in to lay. Good luck!

I’d love to see your Silkies. Can you post pics to the SF Fowl site?

Jennifer

My Silky chicks have started laying this week! The eggs are tiny - 1/3 of a regular size chicken egg.

Chicken eating eggs

Has any of you experienced your chicken eating the eggs? One of my hen had developed the taste for eggs though she doesn't do it regularly. Now, one of the Silky chicks that I got last year turned out to be a rooster, he picked up the habit and is REALLY fond of eggs! Any suggestions on what I can to to discourage this behavior?

Thanks,

Tara
