My understanding is it also applies to your own dwelling. That
said, putting the henhouse under a deck or in a garage doesn’t seem like
a bad idea, provided the hens have access to the outdoors during the day. I’ve
only heard of a health inspector coming out if a neighbor complains. The inspectors
seem to have a lot of leeway about what’s considered an acceptable coop,
based on stories I’ve heard from people who’ve had a call paid by
an inspector. I had 4 hens in my SF backyard for two years; it’s a very
dense neighborhood and the coop was less than 15 feet from two of the neighbors
windows. I’m very grateful to my neighbors for not complaining, and
within 20 feet of 3 other neighbors windows. I did give away eggs, and some of
my neighbors said they liked watching the birds from their windows and didn’t
mind the “sounds of nature” but they would have been well within
their rights to complain – my chickens are LOUD! They’re especially
loud right at dawn, which this time of year is at about 5:30 am. I think one
thing that saved us was that there’s a lot of ambient noise in our
neighborhood – trucks, buses, streetcars, cars, motorcycles – so the
chicken squawks got muffled a bit by all the traffic. I don’t want to
discourage you – I loved keeping chickens in the city, but the noise was
a surprise to me. The other things that may lead a neighbor to complain are
flies and rodents – it’s important to keep those in check. I
recently moved to a rural area; now my hens can squawk to their heart’s
content.
