My indian runner ducks have been on a laying strike for almost two months. :) Actually, they've been molting, which they did last Fall (not summer) and they stopped laying for a few weeks then. It seems like they are done molting, but they have not restarted laying. I am thinking about adding some more protein to their diet. Does anyone have experience with this?
Also, I noted this Sf Chronicle article that was posted here some months back (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2008/06/27/carollloyd.DTL) and was wondering if anyone knew how to get in touch with Colin Phipps? I am trying to identify sites for sustainability tours for next year.
Thanks,
-Kevin

Are there any fowl friends still on this list? What's going on in
your fowl world?
Here's some news from mine:
My four hens have been laying for 14 months and have produced 864
eggs! That's not bad considering they're all so-called dual-purpose
breeds, not laying breeds. About half their diet is organic
commercial layer pellets, the rest is scraps from my kitchen and my
neighbor's kitchen, some greens that I grow for them, and Dumpster-
bound veggies that I get from a neighborhood seniors' lunch program.
To keep them quiet first thing in the morning, they get a few
handfuls of their favorite treats: sprouted wheat berries and raw
brown rice.
In the parts of my yard that they have access to, they've stripped it
clean of snails and slugs, as well as most plants! They don't eat
rosemary, fuschia or fig leaves, although they will eat ripe figs
within reach. Everything else I don't want them to touch I have had
to fence off or put out of reach.
This past weekend one of the birds finally figured out that she could
hop up the steps from the garden up to the deck. It's only about 6
steps but for some reason they never tried it before. She joined me
for a little R&R in the sun, and then when I went inside to refill my
coffee cup, she followed me right in. She poked around in the kitchen
a bit, and was curious but very polite -- she didn't even leave any
calling cards.
It would be good to know if anyone is still interested in keeping
this group active.

Anyone interested in keeping quails? Will, a quail keeper I know, is giving away his quails and cages - they are pretty large and need to be transported by a truck. He is willing to deliver them to a central location for $25. This should happen pretty soon - in a week or two.
Let me know if you are interested, I'll see if we should have him deliver to SF or Merritt College in Oakland after I hear from people this weekend.

Hi Tara,
Fortunately my hens haven’t yet discovered how good theireggs taste, but I looked up the problem in the book, “Storey’sGuide to Raising Chickens,” by Gail Damerow. She says once a chicken getsthe taste for eggs, it’s really hard to break them of the habit and itcan spread to other birds. I guess you’ve figured that out already. She suggestsremoving or debeaking the culprit (I’m not recommending that, just passingon her advice!). She also says they may eat their eggs if bored or if theirrations “allow chickens to satisfy their nutritional too quickly, leavingthem with nothing to do.”
She also suggests discouraging nonlaying activities in the nestby hanging a curtain in front of it to darken it. Cut the curtain into hangingstrips or temporarily pin up one corner, she suggests, so that hens aren’tsuspicious about going in to lay. Good luck!
I’d love to see your Silkies. Can you post pics to the SFFowl site?

Has any of you experienced your chicken eating the eggs? One of my hen had
developed the taste for eggs though she doesn't do it regularly. Now, one of
the Silky chicks that I got last year turned out to be a rooster, he picked up
the habit and is REALLY fond of eggs! Any suggestions on what I can to to
discourage this behavior?
Thanks,
Tara

BROOKLIN, Canada, Feb 27 (IPS) - Free, authoritative and online: 1.8 million species. That
is the ultimate goal of the Encyclopedia of Life project, which put its
first 30,000 species on the Internet this week. This ambitious global
project will provide the details of every known species -- habitat,
range, life cycle, pictures, and more -- and archive everything online
so anyone can access this important information about life on Earth.
From sharks to mushrooms to bacteria, the Encyclopedia of Life will
provide scientifically verified information that will satisfy both a
grade school child's curiosity or enable a university researcher -- or
amateur naturalist -- to make a scientific breakthrough, says James
Edward, new executive director of the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL)
project headquartered in Washington, DC at the Smithsonian Institution.
Each species page has a built in content slider that allows you to
select how much information you want to see on the page. And there is
plenty of detail, including links to at least 1 million pages of
digitized scientific information that is normally only available in the
big 10 natural history museums located in the developed world.

Fancy meeting you here on this list! The short answer is 20 feet from doors an windows, and not more than four birds. The long, detailed answer direct from SF health codes:
SEC. 37. KEEPING AND FEEDING OF SMALL ANIMALS, POULTRY AND GAME BIRDS.
(a) Number of animals. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to keep or feed, or cause to be kept or fed, or permit to be kept or fed, on any premises over which any such person, firm or corporation may have control within residential districts, (1) more than three dogs of age six months or older without obtaining a proper permit and license to operate a dog kennel as defined in Section 220 of the San Francisco Business and Tax Regulations Code, and (2) more than a total of four of the following in any combination: dogs of age six months or older unless part of a dog kennel, hares, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, gerbils, chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, doves, pigeons, game birds of any species, or cats. Nothing in this section, however, shall prohibit the feeding of any wild bird not specifically prohibited by this section unless such feeding creates a public health nuisance.

No permit shall be issued by the Department to any person, firm or corporation, to keep or maintain for commercial purposes any of the above named fowl, animals or birds within the commercial or industrial districts, unless said person, firm or corporation has complied in full with the following requirements:
(1) It shall be unlawful to establish hereafter any place of business for the sale of the fowl, animals or birds specified above within 25 feet of any door, window or other opening of any dwelling, apartment house or hotel if live fowl, animals or birds intended for sale are kept therein; provided, however, that this restriction shall not apply if a wall, ceiling, floor or other impermeable barrier between the place of business and such habitation will prevent odors and noise from disturbing the occupants of the habitation. My hens have stopped laying since Dec also; occasionally they would pop one out but very rare - one of them laid an egg in the middle of the worst storm! None of them are molting or have molted this winter season. However, I remember the older one molting towards the end of last winter. It does seem an odd time to molt...
Btw, none of my hens ever molted together, perhaps they are of different breed and age. Two are a year old and have never visibly molted, although I've sometimes noticed flakes in the feather. The one that is now 2 and a half molted twice in 1 year but not since.

Hello fowl friends,
Those of you who have hens, I'm curious about your experience with
their molting and laying in the winter.
My four hens are 11 months old. Three of them (a Dominique and two
Orpingtons) stopped laying in late December and molted in January. It
seems like the worst time of year to lose so many feathers, but they
appear to be healthy.
The fourth hen, an Australorp, hasn't lost a single feather and
continues to lay, although her production dropped starting in December
from about 6 eggs/wk to 4/wk.
Would love to hear about other local hens' experiences during these
cold dark months.
Cheers,
Jennifer

Heidi, would you be willing to show us the coop that you've built?
May be we could meet up at some point and see if Heidi could give us some assistance on building a coop? I live in SE San Francisco, be happy to host.

Hi! I am very interested in sharing your order. I am looking for 2-3
females, specifically the black-feathered variety. Please let me

I have been doing research on the web for sources of day-old Runner
Ducks, but only have been able to find one source that will sex the
ducklings:
http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/category/ducklings.html
Since I only want 3-4 of them for their eggs, I have no interest in
acquiring any males. However, the minimum order for the ducklings'
safety is 10 ducklings -- any of the types they sell.
If any one is interested in combining their order with mine, let me
know. I probably will be placing an order in mid/late March, and
hoping to time it so I can pick-up the ducklings from the USPS on a
Friday/Saturday.
FYI, an update on my previous post about the bizarre case of the
chicken killer.
On a side note, if anyone is looking to join a CSA that also
offers eggs from pasture-raised chickens, I’m a big fan of Eatwell Farm.

Last night we have our third visit from the chicken killers.
They shot 22 dead and we had to kill another 2 wounded. The sheriff came
out again and I gave them a name which I had been given to me. They visited the
house and the 'alleged' chicken killer sped of on foot. The truck matched the
description we had given plus the tire tracks matched also. At this moment the
sheriff is getting a search warrant to look for the gun. This will, we hope,
match the shot gun shell left on the farm with this person. More I cannot say
at this moment.
I will be pressing charges if the police gather enough evidence. I will also be
seeking a financial settlement. If any member who is a lawyer can help us with
this please contact me. 530 848 3335.
We are relieved and hope that no more people with guns will be entering the
farm. This cost the lives of too many chickens, the life of Sadie our darling
Guard dog and has taken too much of our time. We look forward to getting back
to doing what we should be, growing great food and eggs for you.
Someone has been killing & stealing chickens from the CSA
farm I belong to, Eatwell Farm in Dixon. In the latest incident, someone fired 10
shotgun rounds in the chicken house, killing 16 chickens. It also resulted in
the death of the farm’s beautiful and hardworking chicken guard dog,
Sadie, who apparently bolted out of the enclosure and was hit by a car.
Nigel Walker, the farmer, needs to borrow a game camera to try
to catch these people in action. If you know anyone with a game camera, pls.
forward this message to them and encourage them to contact Nigel. More info
about the chicken incidents at the farm’s blog, http://www.eatwellfarm.typepad.com/.

The people we suspect who killed the chickens drove along the north boundary at
4pm this afternoon in the same pick vup that was seen stealing chickens just
about a month ago. they were carrying a rifle and sped away at a fast pace once
they say Roberto on his tractor. Unfortunately his phone reception was not good
so he could no alert me soon enough. The sheriff was informed and will patrol
when they can. These people are stupid enough to return so quickly so we have a
good chance to catch them. If we can get a license plate then the police can
take it from there.
Another option for chicks is www.mypetchicken.com. They'll ship as few as 3 chicks from a hatchery in Ohio, & they offer a wide variety of breeds, including some American heritage breeds. I had a very good experience ordering from them -- we got 4 chicks (3 breeds, including a Dominique, America's oldest breed). The hens are now 8 months old, very healthy & hearty, nice temperaments (they like to sit in my lap and get back & neck massages!), great layers. Mypetchicken.com is a good way to go if you're looking for a particular breed that's not offered at local feed stores.
